This document discusses social interaction and its key elements and contexts. Social interaction involves two or more people taking each other into account through social action. The context of an interaction, including physical setting, social environment and surrounding activities, determines its meaning. Norms govern rules of behavior in interactions. Ethnomethodology studies these norms by purposely violating rules, while dramaturgy views interaction as theatrical performances of impression management. Types of interaction include nonverbal exchange, cooperation, conflict and competition. Statuses define social positions that shape identity and roles define culturally appropriate behaviors associated with each status in a given interaction.
