This presentation discusses potential reasons why women may use different speech forms than men. It provides four explanations: 1) Social status consciousness leads women to use more standard forms. 2) Women serve as guardians of societal values and use polite speech as role models. 3) As a subordinate group, women avoid offending men and protect their social standing through politeness. 4) Vernacular forms are associated with masculinity and toughness, which women may not want to express. In conclusion, language allows human connection and sharing of ideas through mastering cognitive skills.

woman be more like a
man?
❖ The use of more standar
speech forms as a way of
claiming such status.
❖ Woman believe that the way
they speak signals their social
class background or social
status in community. They are
more status conscious than
man.
4. Woman role as Guardian of society’s values
★ The society tends to expect “ better”
behaviour from women than men.
Therefore , they serve as role models for child.
★ That’s why women are designated the role of
modelling correct behaviour in the community.
However, the explanation is certainly not true for all because
the interaction between mother and child are likely to be very
relaxed and informal { vernacular forms occur most often in
everyone's speech}.

❏ Women as a subordinate group:

➔ Use polite speech.
➔ Protect women’s “face”.
6. The functional speech or vernacular speech of expressing gender or racial identity
and particular masculinity /Vernacular forms express machismo
➢ Men prefer vernacular forms because they carry macho
connotation of masculinity and toughness.
Therefore women might not want
to use such form and use Standard
forms that associated with female values or
femininity.
