30. Social Media Best Practices
It’s social, be social (not a seller)
Be generous in ways they would take as
generosity- give them pictures, fun links, etc.
that they will enjoy
Post when people will see your posts and
don’t overwhelm people with too many posts
31. Social Media Best Practices
Social is more and more a visual medium so
use pictures- you get a lot more views and a
lot more sharing of your post when you use
something visual.
For sharing, you don’t have to put it all out
there right away. Put something thought
provoking/Biblical and look for the response.
Pursue those who like/share/write back

33. Don’t be fake– it’s harder and harder to
separate your “lives” whether geographical
lives or digital lives and when you meet a
social media contact you don’t want them to
walk away wondering what happened to the
online person they thought they knew
Social Media Best Practices
Social media rides on the backbone of the internet and there wasn’t much in the way of internet penetration in the region ten years ago.
Anything in red was either not researched OR not available (Western Sahara)
Internet penetration rates were gathered via World Bank indicators:
http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IT.NET.USER.P2
Internet penetration has obviously increased substantially in the past ten years although it remains quite limited in some countries in the region.
All internet penetration rates gathered via World Bank indicators:

These figures were just released. No separation of N. African and Sub-Saharan penetration rates- N. African should be higher/Sub-Saharan lower.

The Egyptian revolution that led to the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak’s regime in 2011 was credited as one of the first “social media revolutions” showed that social media could be an important influence even with penetration levels as low as just under 6% which is what Facebook’s penetration was in Egypt at the time.

YouTube is considered a social media platform because of the ability to create and follow channels and comment on videos.
Odnoklassniki means “Our class” in Russian and VK and Odnoklassniki have a huge imprint in Central Asia.
Iran bans most outside social media and creates its own alternatives. It is quite possible that Facebook is the most widely used social media platform in Iran but its use is masked due to the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) by Iranians hoping to hide their use of it which, therefore, mask its use in the country.
QQ Mobile and WeChat are mainly used in China/East Asia.
Viber sells itself as a secure messaging service but, in reality, it is fairly insecure. A good breakdown of the security of various messaging services is provided by the Electronic Frontier Foundation-

Kakao talk is a Korean social media service.
What are the issues that keep you or people on your team from using social media in your outreach?
First off, Social media, by definition, is all about relationships
Back in the day you would start off your day picking up the newspaper and catching up on all the latest goings on. Today, you have the potential to find the latest news, the issues that are on people’s minds, the topics they are talking about by opening up Facebook and listening, almost as if a fly on the wall, to the topics your people are talking about amongst themselves (presuming you have friended them!).
Some worry that people put up a false pretense on social media and you don’t really know who you are dealing with but I propose that the opposite is the case, if you are in relationship with the people you are seeking to reach you now have the opportunity to see the real them, in conversation with each other, that you don’t get to see when you are in real life conversation with them and they are putting up the face they want you to see.
So do you use social media to provide a bigger, louder platform for sharing the message. In a way, yes, but that’s not its best use.
Better is to use social media to get little bits of salt and light into your contacts life and to find out who responds- who likes, who shares, who responds (think of how Jesus used this technique with his parables). From there start seeing which contacts continue responding and deepening- sift and funnel out those who are already seeking.
