  37. 37. Do we really believe that we’re called to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth and to go where the unreached are? Just like cigarettes and cola, cell phones have gotten there before us and yet, unlike cigarettes and cola, cell phones can enable the unreached connect with the Lord and His people
  38. 38. Do we really believe that we’re called to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth and to go where the unreached are? There are roads that are already paved and available to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth and they are waiting to be traveled on!

  • Mobile is important for more than just its huge global penetration. The mobile phone has a huge number of potential ministry tools that can be leveraged both individually as well as in various combinations!
  • Their mobile phone is their most precious possession, the one item they bring with them when they make the perilous ocean crossing and the first item they use upon their arrival in Greece (notice the rafts haven’t even fully deflated on the shore).
  • Total internet users as of 11/2015

  • Back in the day of the early church there would have been many reasons not to use/rely on the Roman road network for the spread of God’s kingdom
  • But remember that we have a redeeming God!
  • Mobile Advance exists to help in the work of redeeming the digital/media world we find ourselves struggling with today so that it can be a tool God uses in bringing His kingdom to the last and the least.
  • We’re not the only ones with the bright idea that the digital/media world we live in can be harnessed to serve a higher calling.

  • PTL the missions community is working together, rather than apart, to leverage this opportunity by collaborating and sharing knowledge via such networks as the Mobile Ministry Forum which now includes representation from more than 150 mission agencies, ministries and other organizations.
  • Globally, as of 2015, only 14% of all non-Christians know a Christian- 86% do not personally know a Christian!!!
    http://www.internationalbulletin.org/issues/2015-01/2015-01-028-johnson.html
  • What a contrast, 86% don’t know a Christian but 60% plus have a mobile phone connection- perhaps those mobile connections could be a tool to connect these people to God’s lifesaving Gospel and Kingdom.

  • In one very closed country a ministry recognized that many citizens were masking their internet use by using VPNs (Virtual Private Networks). They discovered that one VPN that was being used in the country was free to users but was funded by advertising. The ministry was able to contract with the VPN company to advertise free Bible downloads and thousands of people responded and downloaded Bibles to their devices.
  • Media enables you to sift through thousands of individuals to find those that God is already moving in and that are seeking more of Him.

All too often our salt and light on-the-field is limited to a fairly small number of contacts. Media enables God’s salt and light to get before a much greater number of people and can help us discern who to focus in on.
  • I took this picture the other day while I was here at the conference. What if this could be a tool to use to find who out there is seeking more of God?
  • How about if I simply added a little bit of text to the image, in this case a verse, and sent it out via social media to my contacts and, perhaps to a much wider social media world with the help of things like hashtags, etc. and see what happened next.
  • This is the verse (notice I don’t even put that it’s a verse) and I put it out there to see who responds and then track the engagement. Who likes? Who shares? Who comments? Who asks about what it means? Those people are potentially the ones that God is working in, the ones who are seeking, and given enough responses over the course of time, they are likely the ones I should be focusing on developing a relationship with whether online or off.
  • Current Facebook penetration as of 11/2015
    http://www.internetworldstats.com/

Facebook penetration from 2010 was gathered from the following sites:
    http://interactiveme.com/2011/06/facebook-statistics-in-the-mena-middle-east-q1-2011/

    http://www.greyreview.com/2011/01/01/over-111-million-facebook-users-in-asia-as-of-new-years-day-slowing-growth-indonesia-widens-lead-and-south-korea-on-hyper-growth/
  • Farida was a Muslim woman who was found to be pregnant out of wedlock. We had shared the story of the woman caught in adultery with all her accusers who were demanding that Farida be killed but the message never seemed to catch. When we took the story and shared it via a clip from Magdalena: Released from Shame (http://www.magdalenamovie.com/) things changed as the message connected with viewers hearts.
  • I had a small ziploc (about 1/3 the size of a sandwich bag) in my pants pocket with 500 microSD cards- each loaded with audio Bibles, JESUS Films, etc.)
  • I had a BibleBox (www.biblebox.org) in my other pocket turned on and transmitting audio Bibles and other audio/visual resources in six languages to anyone who connected to its “network”
  • The majority of the world’s population provides audio/visual, not text material
  • View particularly from 40 seconds to 1:57

Note how few phones the videos were put (7) onto and how many phones (118) and villages (50) the video was found on just a month later with no further efforts made by the video’s producers.
  • Stories I heard just during the conference of workers in very closed countries who had people they were discipling initiate daily sharing of Bible verses via WhatsApp, another worker who had to leave the country they had been working in but being able to continue interacting with a new believer via Discovery Bible Studies sent and responded to over social media.
  • Reproducibility, one of the core requirements of any good Church Planting strategy and, amazingly enough, typically the people in our host countries have better phones than us old-timer/frugal missionaries!
  • This is what happens all too often when we try to produce media that will work for our host culture.
  • A mobile phone in local believers and missionaries’ pockets means that they now can be the ones producing media- this is a revolution just as Guttenberg’s press was. This revolution, though, is for the poor and illiterate where the Guttenberg press was for the rich and literate.
  • Digital media is a Roman Road that can bring the Gospel to the last and the least but are we going to help it travel down that road?
  • If so, that includes the spheres of mobile, internet and social media where billions of them can be found today.
  • I could easily have spent the time here giving you a report of all the giants in the digital media land but where is God in that? If God is for us, who can stand against us? (Romans 8:31)

Will we be like Joshua and Caleb or the other ten who got to go in and spy out the land God had given to Israel?
