Social Media Meets Artificial Intelligence
Automated Identification Of Discussion Topics In Twitter Communities
How to extract valuable insights from a
noisy medium such as Twitter?
Our approach
Gather tons of tweets
(4M+ should do it)
Extract semantic features Use machine learning to analyze
the data
Using state-of-the-art neural models to tackle the problem
Trump
We gathered four million tweets from hard-core
Trump supporters
Then, we trained a shallow neural network to map the tweet’s
content into a semantic space
Mexico is ‘bringing drugs, crime and rapists’ to the U.S.
Trump folks think of foreigners as invaders…
…invaders scare the hell out of them
Mexicans are taking our jobs and killing us
How to automatically identify topics in
Twitter?
Brexit
Our new approach
We gathered three million tweets using the
#Brexit hashtag
Hate speech Campaigns Economy
Take-away points
1. We can visualize what ideas a Twitter community associate
to a specific term in an easy to read map or tree.
2. We can identify what the main topics are inside the
community’s conversation.
3. We can automatically track he evolution of those topics.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Write a mega word cloud that gives no information whatsoever and pose the question there: how can we make sense off all the stuff happening in Twitter?
  • #4 We should give a very intuitive description of neural network model is and what we mean by semantic map. I think we should say the following: A neural network is, roughly speaking, a computer model of the way the human brain works. A semantic feature of a word is an evoked concept, for example: the words “father” and “son” both give the idea of “man” and “male” so they have these semantic features in common but they have a different “generation” which makes them a different word.
  • #5 There is no way of a slide having the name Trump on it without his pic. I believe we should only talk about Trump in here, and give some context: how is Trump relevant? (Everybody knows him, he is the most famous topic of conversation, everybody says so.)
  • #6 What are we saying here? Those fans actually retweeted this image, right?
  • #17 We ought to make emphasis in the fact that these Word clouds are better than the first ones without doing any analysis.
  • #18 I believe we some images in here.
