2. What are social groups?
• Social groups are people who are categorised in to certain
groups depending on various factors whether its how they
dress or what music they listen to, their friends tend to be in
the same social group. A social group may share the same
opinions, listen to the same music and dress in the same
fashion.
3. What do social groups represent?
-Different social groups stand for their own beliefs, whether its through
religion, lifestyle, fashion or music.
-Each social group has their individual style and may dress in a certain way
to express themselves. (E.g. Girly girls would stereotypically wear pink)
-age could also have an impact into which social groups people decide to
join, because whatever music is popular at the time may have an influence
on a person’s taste in music.
-Someone’s parents could listen to a certain type of music and from this, a
person could also like the same music.
4. Types of social groups
There are a range of different stereotypical social groups
such as:
-’Emo’s’ who dress in dark colours, listen to punk rock
music and tend to be shy.
-’Girly girls’ who wear pink, listen to pop music and are
interested in fashion.
-’gangsters’ who dress in an urban style, listen to rap
music and are known for causing trouble.
-’Geeks’ are interested in classical music, they dress smart
and achieve well academically in everything they do.
5. How my magazine represents the ‘indie’ social group through
Through the anchorage text and anchorage text
slogan, my magazine shows that it
is made for people who enjoy indie
music, the slogan, ‘Original and
individual music’ gives off an idea
that the music this magazine
includes is original and ‘being
original’ is associated with indie
people.
The anchorage text asks the reader
if they ever wanted to learn how
to play an instrument, and gives
them the opportunity to learn
guitar, live music is what indie
music is all about. The anchorage
text represents indie fans through
the words used, it tells the reader
that ‘Ed Sheeran’, who is a
folk/indie singer talks about his
love for folk, this suggests that the
reader will have a passion for folk
and want to hear what these
artists have to say.
6. ‘Indie kids’ are represented through the use of
mise en scene
Through the mise en scene it is visible that
the clothing worn in pictures represents
fans of indie and folk music, this social
group is open to a niche market.
The girl on the cover is wearing a white top
with white pearls and a polka dot
headband, this clothing would be classed as
unusual because pearls are stereo typically
worn with formal outfits and the girl is
dressed casual, this shows that the girl has
her own individual style, readers o this
magazine will want to have their individual
style too and therefore, indie girls are
represented through my media product.
The instrument the girl is holding is a
typical folk guitar and conveys the meaning
The make up the girl wears is not what a stereo typical girly
that she is a singer/ songwriter, indie girls
girl would wear, eye shadow is work on her cheeks and
will admire her for writing songs, these girls
around the eye area, there are pink circles close to one of her
will also see that she is a similar age and
eyes, this make up has connotations of original. The girl on
they may feel that this is how their
the cover will represent readers of the magazine because she
generation is represented.
will be a similar age, they will take inspiration from her make
up and fashion and create their own style, this results in the
readers of the magazine as being unique.
