How did you attract/address your audience?
1.
2. My selected target audience is 16-27 year
olds and a secondary audience of ages
above that. I plan to have a larger male
audience as they are the primary readers
of music magazines, with a smaller
female audience.
3. TO ATTRACT MORE FEMALE READERS
Naomi Wolf’s theory (1991)
Images used of an attractive woman to try and sell
products to other women as they will aspire to
be like them and therefore are more inclined to
buy the product because they want to look like
the woman placed on the product. She believes
that woman have to be conditioned into
aspiring to what is fashionable now by a male
dominating patriarchal society
4. ADOPTING THIS THEORY
I have adopted Wolf’s theory by using an attractive girl on
my cover to attract females of the same age who like this
genre of music to expand the female readership in music
magazines, especially within the indie and alternative
genre. Providing the theory is correct, this will therefore
attract a large amount of females to be part of my target
audience.
It will still attract males, however as they are attracted to the
woman placed on the cover and as they are the primary
gender of my target audience.
6. The expression used in the cover of my magazine would primarily
come under sexual or invitational
There is emphasis on the eyes, with the mouth open slightly with a
hint of a smile. The shoulder is slightly revealed which gives it a
hint of sexuality. She is projecting a sense of mystery and
sexuality.
Generally, the indie/alternative world is dominated by male bands
and artists although a small proportion are female fronted
bands and female artists. I have used a female artist to stray
from the crowd and give a sense of difference as that is what
this genre is all about.

USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
Escape and diversion from everyday life
Surveillance and information
Personal relationships
Personal identity
8. ESCAPISM APPLIED TO MY MAGAZINE
My magazine creates an escape from
everyday life for the readers so they get
lost in the worlds of the artists in the
magazine and what else may be
happening reviews of gigs and
interviews etc
9. SURVEILLANCE AND INFORMATION APPLIED TO
MY MAGAZINE
My magazine is heavily based on
information of the music scene so it
brings the people who are interested in
the music scene more knowledgeable
and up to date with what’s happening in
the music industry
10. PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS APPLIED TO MY
MAGAZINE
Personal relationships are created through my
magazine by giving people something to talk
about and give opinions on and I have gave
platform for this though social media sites such
as Facebook and twitter to allow them to talk in
the most modern technological ways.
11. PERSONAL IDENTITY APPLIED TO MY
MAGAZINE
My target audience will identify themselves with
the lifestyle my magazine promotes through
articles etc. adding to this appeal I have used
the same age range of the people on the cover
to my target audience. It gives them an identity
of rebelliousness without actually being that
way just through reading the magazine.
12. My article is of a young woman who was once in a band and
has went solo recently. She wants to fit in into the
industry properly without the help of her ex band
members and is releasing a new album soon. Readers
cannot properly relate to this but Aria may be a woman
they aspire to be or Endless Innocence may have been
one of their favourite bands and they want an exclusive
on what happened.
13. I have made my model wear casual clothing and a style typical for the indie
alternative genre and what they would wear so that the people who
read to the magazine find it easier to relate to the stars in casual
clothing and so they can see what genre they are in and the style of
music they listen to, helping with personal identity.
Reaching my target audience, I have made the model the same age as the
target audience to again help them relate and give inspiration that they
could be like Aria one day.
