We will discuss four misunderstandings often connected to use of digital traces:
1) the use of a notion of digital traces that is both too narrow and too ambitious;
2) the alternation of oblivion and paranoia on the conditions of digital traces' production;
3) the tendency to confuse digital and automatic;
4) the hope that the digital traces are easily clamped by conventional methods.
We will try to show than when these misunderstandings are avoided, digital methods can renew the vision of social sciences and help them to overcome the classic divide between qualitative and quantitative methods.
What do Data Visualisations want?
1. Data visualizations do not speak for themselves and need words and context to provide meaning.
2. While data visualizations are useful for identifying patterns, they often only scratch the surface and deeper qualitative analysis is needed to understand the full context and meaning.
3. When analyzing social media data, data visualizations are limited because they reduce large amounts of data and obscure important details; combining visualizations with in-depth qualitative analysis provides a more complete understanding.

This paper introduces research in progress that examines how queer women perform sexual identity across social media platforms. Applying a lens of queer theory and Actor Network Theory, it discusses women’s embodied self-representations as taking on forms that both conform to and elaborate upon the selfie genre of digital representation. Acknowledging similarities and differences across platforms, specifically between Instagram and Vine, a novel walkthrough method is introduced to identify platform characteristics that shape identity performances. This method provides insights into the role of platforms in identity performances, which can be combined with analysis of user-generated content and interviews to better understand digital media’s constraints and affordances for queer representation.

Authoritarian and Democratic Data Science in an Experimenting Society
How will the role of data science in democracy be transformed as software expands the public’s ability to conduct our own experiments at scale? In the 1940s-70s, debates over authoritarian uses of statistics led to new paradigms in social psychology, management theory, and policy evaluation. Today, large-scale social experiments and predictive modeling are reviving these debates. Technology platforms now conduct hundreds of undisclosed experiments per day on pricing and advertising, and the algorithms that shape our social lives remain opaque to to the public. Community Structure in Congressional Conversation Networks
This document analyzes Twitter conversation networks among members of Congress. It finds that Republicans, Senators, and males are more likely to mention members of the opposing party or chamber in their tweets. Senators and males are also more likely to mention members of the opposing party. The networks indicate low cohesion among members and that a small subset of members are explicitly engaged by others, reflecting that Twitter is used more for selective outreach than broadcasting to all members. Overall, the networks on Twitter do not show more polarization than political blogs and represent new media being used for existing behaviors rather than entirely novel political interactions.

Introduction
According to Robert E. Dento and Gray C. Woodward (1998), two of the most famous contributor to the political communication studies in America, said that political communication mainly refers the way in which senders to transfer the political messages to the receivers. The methods of sending the message, which will effect a region’s political environment, normally include political speeches, news media coverage, and ordinary citizen’s talk. The concentrations usually focus on the discussions of who has the authority to sanction, to allocation of public resources, who has the authority to make decision, as well as social meaning like what makes someone an American. As a result, it is obviously to see that the nature of political communication is not only the source of a message, but it is the transformation of political content and purpose to citizens. Therefore, the purpose of political communication strategy can be defined as to influence public knowledge, beliefs, and action on political matter. (McNair B, 2003)
However, due to the progress of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the 20th century, the traditional mass media, which includes TV shows, newspapers and magazines, and radio, is losing its place to the latest type of media, such as the Internet and real-time communication tools in the area of political communication. For example, in February, 2011, the Americans had closed the video station, the ‘ Voice of America’, which has been conducted for more than half century. It used to be regarded as a powerful mass media in political communication tool. But, does it mean that the American government has weakened its use of mass media in political communication? The answer is no. When the announcement of shutting down the ‘Voice of America’, Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, has given a freestyle presentation at George Washington University, and it was published on the Internet, synchronously. the event itself indicates that the American government has realized that the powerful capability of newly mass media. (Platform Magazine, 2015) and the government is getting ready to use this tool to reinforce it political status.
Consequently, this essay will discuss how the new mass media affects American political communication strategy in election, as well as the practice of strategies. At the same time, the three discussion points will be analyzed in the following part.
The characteristics of newly mass media in Election
The concept relates to the emergence of ‘newly mass media’ results form the development of ICTs. The ICTs enables some real-time communication tool, such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, to become a critical platform for citizens to express their political issues. Consequently, as a government, which is famous by its democratic social media, it was announced by Hillary that the US would spend 2.5 billion in the enhancement of “internet democracy”. One of the important uses of YouTube is for education & training. This proposed model of YouTube Channel is creating a specialised university channel which could be of great interest to the students, trainers, interests & public, as they will benefit from the services provided, especially in the framework of media training.

The methods of sending the message, which will effect a region’s political environment, normally include political speeches, news media coverage, and ordinary citizen’s talk. The concentrations usually focus on the discussions of who has the authority to sanction, to allocation of public resources, who has the authority to make decision, as well as social meaning like what makes someone an American. As a result, it is obviously to see that the nature of political communication is not only the source of a message, but it is the transformation of political content and purpose to citizens. Therefore, the purpose of political communication strategy can be defined as to influence public knowledge, beliefs, and action on political matter. (McNair B, 2003)
However, due to the progress of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the 20th century, the traditional mass media, which includes TV shows, newspapers and magazines, and radio, is losing its place to the latest type of media, such as the Internet and real-time communication tools in the area of political communication. For example, in February, 2011, the Americans had closed the video station, the ‘ Voice of America’, which has been conducted for more than half century. It used to be regarded as a powerful mass media in political communication tool. But, does it mean that the American government has weakened its use of mass media in political communication? The answer is no. When the announcement of shutting down the ‘Voice of America’, Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, has given a freestyle presentation at George Washington University, and it was published on the Internet, synchronously. the event itself indicates that the American government has realized that the powerful capability of newly mass media. (Platform Magazine, 2015) and the government is getting ready to use this tool to reinforce it political status.
Consequently, this essay will discuss how the new mass media affects American political communication strategy in election, as well as the practice of strategies. At the same time, the three discussion points will be analyzed in the following part.
The characteristics of newly mass media in Election
The concept relates to the emergence of ‘newly mass media’ results form the development of ICTs. The ICTs enables some real-time communication tool, such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, to become a critical platform for citizens to express their political issues. Consequently, as a government, which is famous by its democratic social media, it was announced by Hillary that the US would spend 2.5 billion in the enhancement of “internet democracy”. Thus, the year of 2011 is regarded as .
New Media: Overview & A Model of YouTub Edu
YouTube, Facebook and Twitter have become the new weapons of mass mobilization, especially in the Arab World. These tools include the whole media and modern technology, which depends mainly on the Internet.
YouTube, which was founded in February 2005, allows millions of people to discover, watch and share originally created videos, not only but also created many channels, in various fields of the life. One of the important uses of YouTube is for education & training. This proposed model of YouTube Channel is creating a specialised university channel which could be of great interest to the students, trainers, interests & public, as they will benefit from the services provided, especially in the framework of media training.
My project explores how we can use YouTube more effective in field of teaching & training, and how we can use it to reveal our insights in new ways.
Diffusion of Innovations and Political Activism- Final Slides

Final Research Project
The document summarizes a study on the impact of social media platforms Twitter and Facebook on the 2015 UK General Election. It utilized a mixed-methods approach including an online survey of 52 participants and interviews. The survey found that most respondents were female, between 16-18 years old, and lived in urban areas of England. Qualitative interviews explored how and why social media may have influenced peoples' votes. The study aimed to understand if social media was a major factor in political campaigns and if any voting patterns emerged in relation to these platforms.
CBC & the science academy: A participatory journey
The publicly funded Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has a unique, participatory relationship with the science academy that is showcased on the CBC documentary website Geologic Journey II. Although academics work on interesting projects that have great relevance to those outside academic circles, their work is generally published in journals or texts that are not often accessed or easily understood by the general public. On Geologic Journey II, contemporary research is highlighted in a manner that makes it easily accessible and showcases scientific findings to a much wider audience.
Through the lens of media logic, using the theories of convergence culture and the public sphere, in this paper I explore how the relationship between CBC and the science academy invigorates public discourse, and why building relationships with community partners makes good business sense for a public broadcaster.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
