This document discusses the use of social networking platforms in three European regions to engage the public in discussions around climate change and energy policymaking. It compares the "US approach" to social networking in politics, which focuses on branding, fundraising, and voter engagement, to a potential "European approach" utilizing a multilingual social networking platform used in several EU-funded projects. The document recommends that policymakers use social networking to discuss topics that are both limited in scope but have broad implications, and implement these tools for permanent public engagement rather than one-off experiments.
