4. World Fisheries
• The world capture fisheries peaked in 1985 at
90 million tons
• All industrial capture fisheries would be
bankrupt today without government subsidies
• Marine protein consumption has increased
57% since 1997
• Aquaculture cannot fill the consumption gap
created by increasing consumer demand and
population growth
6. Coral Triangle Fishing
• Many of the stocks in the Coral Triangle have
been fished to the point of overexploitation
• Subsistence fishers using present methods will
fish stocks to the point of collapse in the next
10 -15 years
• Over 40% of the harvest never makes it to
market due to poor handling and lack of
infrastructure

8. The Problem
• 180 million people in the CTI depend on
seafood as their major source of protein.
• The western markets will outbid local
populations for unsustainable marine protein.
• Increased pressure on juvenile fish for local
consumption will collapse stocks.
• The reduction of marine protein in the CTI will
create a Food Security crisis in an area where
most are living at subsistence level or below

• The LSSFI Initiative is a “game changer” with
triple bottom line impact.
• This is an opportunity to insure that the most
productive fisheries of the world are managed
sustainably.
• It is the first time private industry is leading
collaboration among NGOs and government
agencies.

incentives have been used to drive fisher
behavior towards better harvesting methods.
• The model we have developed can be scaled
to the rest of the developing world
• The reduction of industrialized fishing in this
area has changed the economics allowing for
