Into the Night - Technology for citizen science
Current citizen science seems effortless...just download an app and start using it. However, there are many technical aspects that are necessary to make a citizen science project work. In this session, we will provide an overview of all the technical elements that are required - from the process of designing an app., to designing and managing a back-end system, to testing the system end to end before deployment. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a short exercise to consider the design of an app for a citizen science project that addresses light pollution.
Taking Citizen Science to Extremes: from the Arctic to the Rainforest
Citizen Science is hardly a new concept, but during the last decade it has seen a rise in both
academic and popular interest for the topic. This trend is in part driven by an increased
interest for open paradigms, as well as, Information Communication Technology (ICT)
innovations such as smartphones, mobile Internet and cloud computing. This has given
rise to the emergence of a growing and highly diverse crop of new – and often innovative –
initiatives that are being, or could be, labelled as Citizen Science.
Whilst there are often big differences between projects, for instance when it comes to
power relations – “Who is working for who?” – or the determination of goals and outcomes
– “Who is solving whose problems?” – there is hope that, at the very least, this rediscovery
of citizen science might lead to a renewed mutual interest, and perhaps understanding,
between scientists and the general public.
Most citizen science initiatives are set in affluent areas of the world, and by and large they
target an educated, or at least literate, public. Extreme Citizen Science aspires to extend the
reach and potential of citizen science beyond this restricted context and is defined as:
Extreme Citizen Science is a situated, bottom-up practice that takes into account local
needs, practices and culture and works with broad networks of people to design and build
new devices and knowledge creation processes that can transform the world.
In this presentation, we are going to explore the various ExCiteS projects that span from the
Arctic – where we aim to develop tools grounded in the needs of Yupik and Iñupiaq coastal
subsistence hunters who are adapting to the rapidly changing climate – to the Congo basin
rainforest – where we enable marginalised and forest communities to better to share their
vast environmental knowledge more effectively locally and with other regional, national and
global stakeholders.
We aim to design, develop, evaluate and deploy a generic platform that enables people with
no or limited literacy – in the strict and broader technological sense – to use smartphones
and tablets to collect, share, and analyse (spatial) data along with a methodology for
introducing, engaging and empowering marginalised communities to participate in and
benefit from citizen science. The platform is and will be used in a variety of concrete
projects, often related to environmental monitoring. Ultimately the goal is to let
communities build so-called Community Memories: evolving, shared representations of the
state of their environment, their relationship with it, and any threats it faces.

EarthCube is a collaborative project begun in 2011 between the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Geosciences and Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure. It aims to develop a dynamic cyberinfrastructure to support interdisciplinary Earth and environmental research. EarthCube has funded over 40 projects totaling $42 million between 2013-2015 related to areas like education, assessment, and partnerships. It is governed by a Leadership Council that sets strategic direction with input from governing bodies like the Council of Data Facilities and Science Committee. EarthCube envisions serving the scientific community by facilitating interdisciplinary research through data sharing and advanced technologies.

It gives an overview of the EU co-funded Planets digital preservation project and includes some early discussion of the plans to create a not-for-profit organisation to carry the technology forward beyond the end of the project in mid 2010.

A persistent question about participatory methodologies that rely on technologies, such as public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS), is how to integrate values, such as inclusiveness of all the people that are impacted by a decision, or identifying options that are popular by the majority but acceptable to the minority, within technologically focused projects. Moreover, technologies do not operate by themselves – they are embedded in organizational, political, and social processes that set how they are used, who can use them, and in what context. Therefore, we should explore where the values reside?
Two factors obscure our view: The misleading conceptualisation that technologies are value free, and can be used for good or for bad – which put all the weight on the process, and ignores the way in which any technology allow only certain actions to be taken. Another popular view of technology conceptualisation is to emphasise their advantages (upside) and ignore their limitations. If we move beyond these, and other “common sense” views of technologies, we can notice how process and technology intertwine.
We can therefore look at the way the process/technology reinforce and limit each other, and the way that the values are integrated and influence them. With this analysis, we can also consider how technological development can explicitly include considerations of values, and be philosophically, politically, and social-theory informed. We need to consider the roles, skills, and knowledge of the people that are involved in each part of the process – from community facilitation to software development.
The paper will draw on the experience of developing participatory geographic information technologies over the past 20 years, and will suggest future directions for values-based participatory technology development.
AAG 2015 - COST Energic, VGI, Citizen Science and OpenStreetMap
The talk will cover the concepts behing COST Action IC1203 - a European Network Exploring Research into Geospatial Information Crowdsourcing: software and methodologies for harnessing geographic information from the crowd (ENERGIC). The network emerged from the realisation that new and unprecedented sources of geographic information have recently become available in the form of user-generated Web content. The integration and application of these sources, often termed volunteered geographic information (VGI), offers multidisciplinary scientists an unprecedented opportunity to conduct research on a variety of topics at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The Action targets fundamental scientific and technological advances by establishing a European network of excellence on Geoweb technologies. The Action focus on VGI and gather efforts carried out in an innovative and under-exploited field of Web research and knowledge production.
In the talk special attention will be paid to the differences between OSM, VGI and Citizen Science, and suggesting 'code of engagement' with OpenStreetMap that are relevant to many other volunteering projects

Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS) is a situated, bottom-up practice that takes into account local needs, practices and culture and works with broad networks of people to design and build new devices and knowledge creation processes that can transform the world. The ExCiteS group at UCL was set up to support the implementation of this concept through the development of theories, methodologies, processes, and technologies that allow any community, regardless of (technical) literacy, to engage in citizen science projects that produce results that are meaningful and useful for them. Stemming from theoretical foundations in participatory action research and public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS), our technologies are designed to carry values with them. Once we visit these values, we can see how they turn into code, and ask how successful these efforts are, using cases in the Amazon, Congo-basin, Namibia, UK, and Malta.

Extreme Citizen Science technologies: attempting to embed values in code
Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS) is a situated, bottom-up practice that takes into account local needs, practices and culture and works with broad networks of people to design and build new devices and knowledge creation processes that can transform the world. The ExCiteS group at UCL was set up to support the implementation of this concept through the development of theories, methodologies, processes, and technologies that allow any community, regardless of (technical) literacy, to engage in citizen science projects that produce results that are meaningful and useful for them. Stemming from theoretical foundations in participatory action research and public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS), our technologies are designed to carry values with them. Once we visit these values, we can see how they turn into code, and ask how successful these efforts are, using cases in the Amazon, Congo-basin, Namibia, UK, and Malta.

Regional Universities Nework (RUN) Vietnam Agriculture Group
Federation University Australia has over 23,000 students across multiple campuses and faculties. The Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation (CeRDI) has 28 staff working on eResearch projects across many domains. CeRDI develops digital solutions and data portals to connect academic research with community, government and industry needs. Examples include online databases and decision support tools for agriculture, natural resource management, and climate change adaptation. CeRDI also works on data interoperability standards and has international collaborations on projects like 3D visualization tools and soil data standards.
MYGEOSS Project
The MYGEOSS project aims to stimulate use of open Earth observation data through innovative citizen apps. An initial call received 58 app proposals from SMEs, universities, and individuals across Europe. Ten winning apps were selected that use open data to address environmental and social issues like air quality, vegetation monitoring, invasive species tracking, and natural hazard alerts. The project seeks to raise awareness of the GEOSS open data portal and engage more user groups in GEOSS through these types of challenges. Lessons learned will help improve data findability and labeling to better support policy and research goals.
Environmental Information: The Roles of Experts and the Public

Access to environmental information and use of it for environmental decision making are central pillars of environmental democracy. Yet, not much attention is paid to the question of who is producing it, and for whom? By examining the history of environmental information, since NEPA in 1969, three eras can be identified: information produced by experts, for experts (1969-1992); information produced by experts, to be shared by experts and the public (1992-2011); and finally, information produced by experts and the public to be shared by experts and the public.
Underlying these are changes in access to information, rise in levels of education and rapid change due to digital technologies. The three eras and their implication to environmental decision making will be explored, with special attention to the role of geographical information and geographical information systems and to citizen science.
Extreme Citizen Science: the socio-political potential of citizen science

What is Crowdsourcing - Nicola Osborne
Crowdsourcing involves breaking large tasks into smaller pieces that can be completed by members of the general public, often online. It provides benefits like lower costs, greater scale and access to citizen data. However, it also faces challenges like ensuring data quality and sustained participation. Well-designed projects and engagement are needed to motivate crowds and address issues. Quality assurance processes are important to build trust in citizen science.
Data accessibility and the role of informatics in predicting the biosphere
The variety, distinctiveness and complexity of life – biodiversity in other words and by implication the ecosystems in which it is situated – is our life support system. It is absolutely essential and more important than almost everything else but it is typically taken for granted. Today’s big societal challenges – food and water security, coping with environmental change and aspects of human health – are beyond the abilities of any one individual or research group to solve. Solving them depends not only on collaboration to deliver the appropriate scientific evidence but increasingly on vast amounts of data from multiple sources (environmental, taxonomic, genomic and ecological) gathered by manual observation and automated sensors, digitisation, remote sensing, and genetic sequencing. In April 2012 we called the biodiversity and ecosystems research communities to arms to formulate a consensus view on establishing an infrastructure to improve the accessibility of the ever-increasing volumes of biological data. We published the whitepaper: “A decadal view of biodiversity informatics: challenges and priorities” that has since been viewed more than 24,000 times. We envisage a shared and maintained multi-purpose network of computationally-based processing services sitting on top of an open data domain. By open data domain we mean data that is accessible i.e., published, registered and linked. BioVeL, pro-iBiosphere, ViBRANT and other FP7 funded projects have all explored aspects of this vision.

In recent years we have seen a change in expectations for the management and availability of all the outcomes of research (models, data, SOPs, software etc) and for greater transparency and reproduciblity in the method of research. The “FAIR” (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) Guiding Principles for stewardship [1] have proved to be an effective rallying-cry for community groups and for policy makers.
The FAIRDOM Initiative (FAIR Data Models Operations, http://www.fair-dom.org) supports Systems Biology research projects with their research data, methods and model management, with an emphasis on standards and sensitivity to asset sharing and credit anxiety. Our aim is a FAIR Research Commons that blends together the doing of research with the communication of research. The Platform has been installed by over 30 labs/projects and our public, centrally hosted FAIRDOMHub [2] supports the outcomes of 90+ projects. We are proud to support projects in Norway’s Digital Life programme.
2018 is our 10th anniversary. Over the past decade we learned a lot about trust between researchers, between researchers and platform developers and curators and between both these groups and funders. We have experienced the Tragedy of the Commons but also seen shifts in attitudes.
In this talk we will use our experiences in FAIRDOM to explore the political, economic, social and technical, social practicalities of Trust.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Artificial Intelligence for XMLDevelopment
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. The potential benefits and the possible pitfalls will be highlighted, providing a balanced view of the subject.
We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Practical examples and methodological guidelines will be provided to elucidate how AI can be effectively prompted to interpret and generate accurate XML markup.
