This newsletter provides updates on events at Xavier High School. It leads with the principal discussing the challenge students face in finding balance between academics, activities, and personal life. It then previews upcoming school events like the Dancing with the Saints fundraiser and Christmas concert. Other sections provide updates on tuition payments, campus ministry activities, guidance counseling opportunities, and recaps of fall sports teams that advanced to state competitions.

“Balance”
Principal‘s
Corner:
2. 2
Principal’s Corner: Balance
Balance. It’s a concept we’ve been trying to master since we were toddlers. Early on it was standing, then walking. We
tried to master steps. We learned to ride a bike. Then it was roller skates/blades and ice skates. Maybe we were bold
enough to get on a ski slope.
As hard as it was back then to gain our physical balance, it seems to pale sometimes in comparison to the elusiveness
of life balance. For us as adults, that work-life balance thing too often seems to be more than a little out of reach. So
many demands on our time, even outside of work, that it can seem like we are no longer in charge of our own sched-
ules. We are in cars and on flights to conduct business. We go from meeting to meeting. We rush through meals.
We run from one child’s activity to another. We look at Mass times at every parish to see if we can get there between
games. We find ourselves doing laundry and balancing checkbooks at midnight or squeezing in mowing the lawn before
dark. We have calendars that never seem to have a blank day on them. And who decided we needed to be available
twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week through our mobile devices? Toss in a car problem, a water heater that
goes out, or an illness and our stress levels push the limits. We ask ourselves, “How did things get so out of control?”
And the things that really matter – prayer, quality time with family, time to relax and reflect – often are pushed to the
bottom of our priority lists if they even make the list at all.
Sadly, this challenge of finding balance in life is not unique to adults. As principal I’m seeing more and
more of it in our students. And the results have me concerned. There seems to be significant pres-
sure, self-imposed in some cases but most often imposed from others, to do more and do it better.
Xavier says, “Get involved!” Colleges ask, “What activities have you been involved in? How many
AP courses have you taken? What were your grades? What is your ACT score?” As parents we can
create incredible pressure on our students by pushing them toward what I call, “resume-building.”
Coaches and directors demand more and more time with them at practice, rehearsal and off-season
programs or workouts. Not only is balance something that seems out of reach but “down time” just
doesn’t exist.
Our students often fill their day with 8 classes. Before they even begin, many are in the fitness
center lifting, attending open gym, getting help from teachers or in some cases attending sched-
uled lessons and/or rehearsals. Immediately after school they head to practice, rehearsal or a job.
They live on fast food between activities. They come home tired and emotionally spent, wishing
they could just shower and go to bed. Instead, they pull out their books and their iPads and begin
what for some nights can seem like a mountain of homework or hours of preparation for the next test,

presentation or project. By the time their head hits the pil-
low, they are beyond exhausted only to hear the alarm just
a few hours later, beckoning them to start the madness over
again. Weekends used to be a time to relax. Now it seems
to be a time to “catch up.”
I want to share that we are looking deeply into what we can
do to help. Our teachers are discussing ways to coordinate
assessment schedules (much easier said than done) to help
make the load on any one day a little more manageable.
We are working on ways to communicate with students
exactly what it is we want them to know and be able to do
for their assessments. We are asking coaches and directors
to consider their students’ schedules as they plan practices,
rehearsals and off-season workouts. We are asking to give
them a day off once in a while. We are insistent that faith,
family and academics take priority over activities.
I also want to share that we need your help. I’d ask that you
have regular conversations with your students regarding
their work load. Help them learn to prioritize and in some
cases “let go” of some of the things that are packing their
schedules. They need to know it’s OK to not have eight
classes and be involved in two, three or four activities at
the same time. They need to advocate for themselves by
visiting with their teachers, coaches and directors about their
schedule on a particular day. They need to know that a “B”
is not the end of the world. They need to know that they
don’t need to take every AP or dual credit course. Most
of all, they need to know that you love them regardless of
what they are involved in, what their grades are and what
their “resume” looks like. I’m not proposing a “don’t care”
attitude by any means. But the stress levels we are seeing in
our students say the “more and better” approach often does
more harm than good.
It’s time for us to encourage our students to find that elusive
“balance.” It’s time for us to let kids be kids (at least some
of the time). You often hear me say, “Keep ‘em busy; keep
‘em broke.” That doesn’t mean every minute of the day
every day of the week.
The level of academic and activities achievement at Xavier is
unparalleled. We have a way of developing incredibly suc-
cessful students. It’s also important to develop happy ones.
As the excitement of the early school year gives way to the
reality of “routine,” I ask that you continue to partner with us
in helping make 2016-17 Xavier’s best ever!
Above all, as we enter this Advent season, let’s commit
ourselves to this year’s challenging theme: “Make me an
instrument of Your peace.”
God bless you and your family!
Sincerely,
Tom Keating, Principal

Campus Ministry Update
Submitted by Jody Esker
XHS Campus Ministry
As we begin this season of Advent, we
prepare for the celebration of Christ’s
birth through prayer and reflection. We
contemplate the First Coming of Jesus
as our Savior, and wait in anticipation for
his promised Second Coming. And amid
the flurry of Christmas preparations and
worldly fixations, we look for ways to
observe the holiness of the season in
our everyday lives.
“Advent is an invitation to
sobriety, to not be dominated
by the things of this world, to
material reality, but rather to
govern them. If, on the con-
trary, we are conditioned and
overpowered by them, it is not
possible to perceive that which
is much more important: our
final encounter with the Lord:
and this is important. That, that
encounter.”

St.Francis Xavier
Feast Day: Dec.3
Patron Saint of Xavier High School
Lord Jesus,
You have sent us to proclaim the Gospel
to all nations, and have promised to
always remain with us.
Look upon this family
gathered on the feast day of St. Francis
Xavier. Pour out the abundance of your
Spirit upon each one of our brothers
and sisters especially on those who are
called to ponder upon the journey made
and to plan what has still to be done,
so that we may offer a more authentic
service to mission.
Grant that we may ever be faithful to
the Gospel and to give an answer
to the hopes which the world places
before your church today.
Stay with us, Lord,
when we gather around the table of
your Bread and your Word,
and when we walk the paths of the
world side by side with our brothers and
sisters. Grant that we all find ourselves
in heaven, our homeland,
after having been members of the same
family on earth.
Amen.
6. Guidance Update
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
Searching for scholarships can be a chal-
lenging and time consuming process.
We encourage families to first consult
with the admission counselor at the
schools they are considering to exhaust
every opportunity the college offers
as a first step. Second, consider any
groups, employers, organizations that
the student or family may be a part of.
In addition, we have compiled a list of
local and national scholarships that we
have imported into Naviance Family
Connection that can be found in the
“Scholarship List”.
Now is the time that seniors should be
starting to look at scholarships & ap-
plying for scholarships. With our earlier
FAFSA filing date, colleges will be hand-
ing out scholarships earlier. Many larger
colleges & universities now have dead-
lines as early as Dec. 1st for scholarship
applications. Contact your admissions
representative for specific deadlines for
the colleges that you are applying to.
Transcript Requests & Letter of Recom-
mendation requests for scholarships are
handled outside of Naviance. Students
should follow the same procedure: Ask
your teacher, email them with the de-
tails & deadline for the scholarship and
give them at least 2 weeks to complete
their recommendation. This requires
a little planning ahead to make sure
you meet your deadlines. All transcript
request go through Mrs. Wallraff in the
Guidance Office.
CONGRESSIONAL SEMINAR
IN WASHINGTON DC
The National Society of Colonial Dames
of America sponsors an Essay Contest
for students interested in Political Sci-
ence. With the election just getting over
and politics actively on students minds,
this would be a great time to think
about applying for this opportunity.
The winner from Iowa receives an all
expenses paid trip to this seminar. Both
girls & boys in grades 10-12 are eligible
to compete. Deadline for the essays is
Dec.1st.

Upcoming Events at Xavier
The Angel of Hope statue at Xavier High School is a beautiful symbol of hope for all who are grieving the loss of a child. This
Advent season, we are called to pray for everyone who is seeking hope and light throughout their days.
Please join us on December 6th as we offer a prayer service at the Angel of Hope statue (located on the east side of Xavier
High School near the Activities Entrance) and lift those up who are in need this Advent season. The service will begin a 7 p.m.
and conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m. This is an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately. For more information, please
contact Judy Ramsey, Adolescent Faith Formation Coordinator for St. Joseph Catholic Church at 319-377-8402.
On Sunday, December 11, the Xavier High School Music Department will present “Christmas With Xavier” highlighting
Xavier’s vocal and instrumental music students. The program will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Ron Thillen Gymnasium at Xavier
High School. Admission is free but attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Metro
Catholic Outreach food pantry.

8. Saints at State: Another Fall to Remember
With Winter activities underway, we take a look back
at the success many of our fall activities exprienced
this school year. Boys’ Cross Country, Volleyball,
and Football all advanced to State while the March-
ing Saints ended their season with an outstanding
performance at the state competition.
2016 marked the seventh time the XHS Boys’ Cross
Country team advanced to the State meet (ad-
vanced in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2015)
and were joined by Katie Tallet, who qualified as an
individual. Xavier Volleyball advanced to the state
semifinals for the first time since the 2010 season
under first-year head coach, Austin Filer, and was
led by Xavier’s very first 1st-Team All-Stater in vol-
leyball, junior Charlotte Richards. Xavier Football
advanced to the state semifinals behind 1st-Team
All-Staters Bryce Schulte, Maliki Wilson, Sam Mey-
ers and Josh Gerke (Max Johnson & Shane Scott
earned 2nd-Team nods and Nolan Butkowski was
named to the 3rd-Team). Additionally, the Xavier
Marching Band earned another Division I rating
under the direction of Kelli Swehla.
Seven Xavier vocal music students were selected
for the All-State Music Festival (Emily Lauer, Curt
Lengemann, Luke Lesnik, Tristen Perreault, Nolan
Pithan, Melody Snow, & Hannah Zwanziger). Two
band students were selected All-State (Joseph
Bioche & Callie Fay).
Congratulations to all our Saints who advanced to
State in their respective activities this fall!

Good News!
Earlier this month, XHS students Carter Kramer, Noah Kepros, Ethan
Lowder, Piper Kesselring & Emily Cunningham represented Xavier as
part of the Iowa Quality Center’s Student TEAMS (Training in Evalu-
ating, Analyzing and Measuring Systems) initiative. As part of the
project, TEAMS from area high schools are assigned an area organi-
zation and a challenge that organization is currently facing. Each of
the TEAMS must then use business tools to analyze the problem and
make recommendations on how to best address the issue. Xavier’s
assigned organization was Four Oaks.
Xavier’s TEAMS group presented to Four Oaks about how Four Oaks
(which has many employees and multiple locations) can spotlight
employees for the outstanding work they do and integrate addition-
al community-building elements to the workplace.
Xavier competed with other area schools who made similar presen-
tations to other area organizations for prize money. Xavier took sec-
ond in the competition, earning $375 for students at Highwood Hills
Elementary in St. Paul, MN -- a school with many students in need
where XHS alumna, Sara Clancy (X06) teaches.
Great work by our Saints and their moderator, Mrs. Tracie Marshall,
on doing an outstanding job of representing Xavier!

Miltner were on hand to receive the award. The grant will be
used for efforts involving Xavier’s Blue Zones Garden (estab-
lished last year), including the expansion of its irrigation sys-
tem and the ability to integrate fertilization into the irrigation
system. This grant is given to organizations who undertake
projects with a community-minded focus and blend educa-
tional and service-oriented objectives together.

day, Dec. 12 & Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. both days at
the Oakland Church of the Nazarene (3000 42nd St. NE). Xavier High
School and CR Kennedy High School will compete for the good cause
of donating blood and saving lives. To donate on behalf of Xavier High
School, contact XHS school nurse, Kris Naeve at kris.naeve@xavier-

Battle of 42nd St. Blood Drive:
Help the Saints Top the Cougars
and Plan to Donate!
Throughout the past several weeks, Xavier
students have held supply drives and have
raised funds for a class of first grade students
at Highwood Hills Elementary in St. Paul, MN.
The classroom’s teacher is XHS alumna, Sara
Clancy (X06).
Last month, Xavier administrators and stu-
dents (Gwen Cataldo, Jefferson Daubitz,
Chloe Kepros, Riley Powell, Grayson Walther
& Hanna Zwanziger) visted the Third Grade classroom to meet the students of Clancy’s class. Highwood Hills has a
95% free and reduced population and 61% of their students are English Language Learners.
Saints raised more than $1,000 through various fundraising efforts (bracelet sales organized by XHS senior Jack
High, TEAMS & general student donations) and a $200 contribution from Target. Additionally, numerous hats,
gloves, snow pants, coats and more were also donated to the cause.
Xavier students along with Mr. Keating delivered the items to Clancy over Thanksgiving break while she was home
visting her family to take back to St. Paul with her.

Xavier Bowling’s Jacob Fulton honored the memories of those we have lost recently in the Xavier community by wearing the names
of former XHS faculty member, Justin Kramer, and Will Richmond, son of XHS faculty member, Jaclyn Richmond, on his bowling shoes
last week as the bowling team opened its season. The Saints defeated CR Kennedy in their season opener.
Xavier celebrated “Principal Appreciation Day” earlier
this month. XHS students decorated Mr. Keating’s and
Ms. Olson’s offices in addition to bringing them coffee
and making a donation on their behalf to the
“Highwood Hills Project.”
Earlier this year, XHS senior/student photographer, Emiko Coffey, embarked
on an independent project to take, mount and display photos of every XHS
senior doing something each student enjoys. That project is now complete
and on display in Xavier’s main stairwell.
Cast members of Xavier’s fall musical: “Bring it On”
Sisters from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist
stopped by Xavier to visit with Saints earlier this month and discuss their
own callings to pursue a religious life and vocational awareness.
Xavier celebrated its annual Community Service Day on
November 9th by performing service at more than 200
locations throughout the metro area.
