This Presentation Documents the Rites of Passage Graduation Celebration for the Seniors of the Turning Point of Lansing, Michigan Non-Profit Community Organization. The Turning Point is comprised of a group of dedicated men in the Lansing Minority community who donate many hours of their time to mentor, direct, and counsel young black males residing in the Greater Lansing, Michigan area.
Many of the young men are from single family homes. Some had encountered adjustment problems in the public school systems and need someone in their corner to help them figure out how to navigate the difficult transition from Boys to Men for black adolescent youth.
This presentation shows some of the phases of the Rites of Passage ceremony, and also the reception immediately after the graduation ceremony. The ceremony was held at Lansing Community College at Dart auditorium on May 13, 2015.
A separate photo album presentation is also uploaded in which approximately 90 photographs taken at the even are shared.

7. The Turning Point of Lansing strives to provide its program participants with cultural awareness, positive
attitudes and the professional skills through an afro centric programmatic theme, which is based on the “7
Principles of Kwanzaa.”
“Kwanzaa is a celebration that has its roots in the black nationalist movement of the 1960s, and was
established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical
heritage by uniting in meditation and study of African traditions and Nguzo Saba, the "seven principles of
African Heritage" which Karenga said "is a communitarian African philosophy".
Kwanzaa celebrates what its founder called the seven principles of Kwanzaa, or Nguzo
Saba (originally Nguzu Saba—the seven principles of African Heritage), which Karenga said "is
a communitarian African philosophy," consisting of what Karenga called "the best of African thought and
practice in constant exchange with the world." These seven principles comprise *Kawaida, a Swahili term
for tradition and reason. Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the following principles,
as follows:
8. The 7 Principles of Kwanzaa Which Guide and Focus the Mentoring Program of
the Turning Point of Lansing are:
Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for
ourselves.
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our
brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to
profit from them together.
Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to
restore our people to their traditional greatness.
Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community
more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
Imani (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the
righteousness and victory of our struggle.
