With demand expected to more than double in the US by 2030, reliability will only get worse. • Power disturbances are expensive – Disturbances cost US economy over $100 billion per year – Utilities will likely start facing additional fines for reliability issues. • Distributed generators are projected to output 8 billion kilowatt-hours by 2020 – a capacity factor of about 5%. These technologies include diesel engines, internal combustion engines, micro-turbines, fuel cells, and renewable technologies such rooftop solar. (source: EIA) • 3.5 million plug-in hybrid cars are forecasted to be on the road by 2020 – Charging will require an additional 10Twh & Tax incentives of up to $7500 for PHEVs will likely accelerate growth . • The booming U.S. wind market is set to cross the 150 gigawatt mark by 2020, according to a report from market research firm Emerging Energy Research (EER). – 5.33 GW installed last year , – 8 GW currently under construction and planned for completion by the end of this year, EER says. • Wind growth will need to double that 2020 projection — a total of 300 gigawatts — to reach the goal of 20% wind generation called for by DOE – GE believes we have the wherewithall to do it • The potential DR market is defined in terms of Summer Peak Load Reduction in GW- The summer peak in 2020 is expected to be at 965GW and the it is projected that DR programs (realistic scenario) will offset the summer peak by 44 GW or 4.6% the industry will have to spend somewhere between $4.0 to $10.0B to accomplish this • We need the smart grid to clean up our act - Today, we as an industry are responsible for 40% of all US carbon emissions– With carbon taxes imminent, it’s important to improve the efficiency of our network and find a way to better integrate renewable power.
- #12 The most visible of the platform’s evolution recently is certainly the XLE model The XLE has nearly 100 units running globally with a couple more GWs coming in the next 2 years The XLE was designed and built on the success of the SLE by changing only what was needed to drive increased customer value through a 15% greater swept area resulting in 3pts of increased GCF at 8m/s The only components designed specifically for the XLE are the blades and the gearbox, everything else comes from the SLE and SE models so it’s reliability builds on the current fleet. We’ll continue to build on this model going forward by increasing the XLE’s reach into full TCIIb and extending it’s cutout. The result will be over 3pts of additional capacity factor at 8.5m/s while ensuring reliability and O&M at the same level as the SLE
- #13 GE’s CONDITIONED BASED MAINTENANCE (CBM) implementation plan builds upon the earlier 2007 development and implementation of the Electrical Simplification System (ESS) using the Mark VIe (6e) Controller …. Technology provided by GE’s Salem VA CONTROLS Center of Excellence. By building upon World-Class ESS Controls AND ADDING CBM’s Advanced Diagnostic capabilities … we are INCREASING value for both the customer and GE. CBM, to be launched in 2009, provides: 6 accelerometers, 1on MB, 3 on GB, 2 on GEN 40 years of experience; 90 units experience with Wind; since 2003 CBM+Mark VIe = Integrated into the existing fiber, switches and control system. Allows for seamlessly exchanging data between controller and 3701. In the way our Mark VIe brought together pitch and controller, CBM integrated brings more data together to add to the robustness of the picture. Example power is an input that goes into the CBM. Allows for simple alarms/data to flow into the SCADA system. Scales easier by adding accelerometers into the system. The M&D will monitor it all together and provide value add. FAG system alarmed at Cap Ridge and recommended replacing a bearing, through knowledge of our components we determined this was not needed, we greased the bearing and continue to monitor. We’re looking at what customer reports to provide The MULT-GENERATIONAL PRODUCT PLAN is to expand the advanced diagnostic capabilities of CBM over a timeline … The INTELLIGENT Wind Turbine will deliver increased customer value …
- #19 These are our areas of focus. Clearly gas and oil for power generators would be thought to be our focus. At the same time not all gas is the same, with the introduction of LNG, or oils and the range used in power gen. Key for Russia is the second block as they look to monetized their hydrocarbon resources. The use of waste streams, off gases or more difficult oils allows them to monetize commodities being exported.
