Slumdog Millionaire was made on a small budget of £8m by Pathé film company. It went on to earn over £150m at the box office, setting a record for Pathé. The film's original distributor went out of business due to the recession, but Fox Searchlight acquired the rights and launched a successful word-of-mouth marketing campaign. Though the film was hugely successful, the director Danny Boyle said he remains uneasy about the effects of awards and fame on egos.
