Worldwide Headquarters staff member approved by US government
to act as liaison for the University, Student, and Government regarding
F-1 student issues.
DSO
Designated School Official are staff members located on campus who
are approved by the US government to assist with immigration issues
regarding your F-1 status.
6. An international student is defined as any non-United States citizen or permanent resident
intending to study at an ERAU campus located outside the United States, students who live
outside of the United States enrolled through Embry-Riddle Online, as well as non-residents
and non-immigrants planning to study at an F-1 campus in the United States.
This school is authorized under Federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students through
the United States Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor
Program (SEVP).

1st time students who want to obtain an F1 Visa to study in United States
Transfer students already in the US with an F1 Visa and transferring to ERAU from
another US school
Students who want to study at the ERAU Worldwide Online Campus from home
country

possess an F-1 visa. The following Worldwide Campuses are
authorized to enroll F-1 students with selection of an approved
program:

Current 2016-2017* tuition rates are for most United States & International
Worldwide locations and the Worldwide Online Campus.

12. Admission Requirements
Foreign Credential Evaluation
All undergraduate and graduate applicants who have educational experience outside the United States are required to provide an
official course-by-course evaluation in English, to include the cumulative grade-point average
English Language Proficiency
Applicants for whom English is not the primary language must:
Attain a minimum score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based) or 79-80
(Internet based)
OR
Attain a minimum score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) of 6.0
OR
Attain a minimum score on the Cambridge English Language Assessment of 170
OR
Successfully complete a college-level English Composition course with a grade of “C” or better from an accredited degree-granting
institution

13. The I-20
(Not required or issued to International Students who study at the Online Campus
from their home country)
An I-20 is a USCIS form issued to the admitted international student from a sponsor
(Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Worldwide) determining the authorized
length of stay. The I-20 ensures the United States government that the sponsoring
institution has verified that the international applicant meets all of the admissions
criteria for that institution, has the English proficiency required, and has proven
financial solvency.
15. Passport
Submit a clear copy of your passport. Passport should be current
and should expire no more than six months from the time you
start classes.
16. Bank letter and financial affidavit
All students must have proof of funds totaling $24,500 for tuition and living
expenses for one year. Bank statements must be detailed and in US dollars.
If student has a spouse and/or children who will apply for F-2 dependent visas,
add $3000 for each person.
The documentation submitted to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the
same documentation submitted to the US Embassy for the F-1 visa.
17. Health Insurance
F-1 students must have health insurance per State law and University requirements as
a condition of enrollment. Should you become ill or are in an accident and are
hospitalized, remember health care is very expensive in the United States.
Purchase insurance from the company of your choice after you have been granted your
F-1 visa but before you register for classes.
Provide a copy of your insurance Identification card to your campus adviser or emailed
to wwintstc@erau.edu and it will be added to your student file.

18. Immunization Record
University requires students to submit, prior to enrollment, proof of immunity to
Measles and Rubella (German Measles).
Documentation of immunity to Mumps, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio is also highly
recommended.
A licensed health care provider must certify immunization data. Copies of school or
military immunization records will be accepted as long as appropriate dates and
signatures are indicated.
Home records or self-reports are unacceptable.
20. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services
VISA PROCESS
1. Apply and be accepted to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school
2. Receive I-20 issued by School PDSO (Principal Designated School Official) or DSO (Designated School Official)
3. Pay I-901 SEVIS Fee
4. Apply and attend student visa appointment at US Embassy in your home country
(http://travel.state.gov). Embassy Consulate determines eligibility for issuance of F-1 Visa
5. Arrive in US within 30 days of the term start date.
6. Maintain status during your studies in the US.
21. Upon Arrival in the US
1. Secure housing and transportation
2. Visit your home campus for further information, class schedule and provide copy of F1 Visa
3. Begin taking classes and maintain F1 student status
22. WORKING IN THE UNITED STATES
If you are an F-1 student, you have the option of training in the United States
by engaging in practical training during your program or after it ends.
Practical training can provide valuable work experience by sharpening and
adding to the skills you are learning in school.
There are two types of practical training available for F-1 students:
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
23. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly
related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to
receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing
their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic
studies (post-completion). However, all periods of pre-completion OPT will be
deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT.
OPT: For students engaged in post-secondary schools or at conservatories.
Twelve months of Regular OPT is available for each higher level of study.
Bachelor’s Degree = 12 months OPT
Master’s Degree = 12 months OPT
24. 3 Categories of OPT
Pre-Completion OPT: Part Time 20 hours per week
Enrolled in school for one academic year (4 terms)
Apply for OPT 120 days prior to eligibility
OPT must be directly related to students major area of study
Student must obtain Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) prior to
working
Any portion of OPT used before the student’s Program End Date
Post-Completion OPT: Full Time 40 hours per week
Enrolled in school for one academic year (4 terms)
Apply for OPT 90 days prior to eligibility
Must be directly related to the students major area of study
Student must obtain Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) prior to
working
24-month (STEM) OPT Extension:
For students who majored in designated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
(STEM) degrees approved by DHS. This type of OPT is a 24-month extension of OPT.
26. International Student CO-OP/Internship
1. F-1 students may be approved for CPT after they have maintained
full time student status for one academic year (9 months/4 terms)
2. International students applying for co-op/internships (CPT) in the
USA must be approved for University Credit
3. The co-op/internship must be directly related to current degree
program
4. International students must contact the ERAU Worldwide
International Advisor (wwinststc@erau.edu) with employment
details to update I-20 with the CPT start and end dates.
27. CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT)
ERAU Eligibility Requirements
Undergraduate Student:
1. Must be active full time in degree seeking program
2. Must have a GPA of 2.5
3. Must have completed at least 30 credit hours before applying
4. Transfer students must have completed at least 30 credit hours with 12 at ERAU
5. Must have open electives/professional development electives available in your degree program
Graduate Student:
1. Must be full time in degree seeking program
2. Must have GPA of 3.0
3. Must have completed 6 credit hours before applying
4. Must have completed 9 credit hours by start of internship
5. Must have open electives available in your degree program
