Let’s talk about what's changed about going to college and preparing for the job market.
Parents, The college process has changed dramatically since you and I were in high school. First, it begins a lot earlier.
Parents, do you know what grade level your student should begin the college planning process?
The College Board and Educational Testing Service say the college process should begin as early as 8th grade. If your student is currently in high school, that’s OK, it just means you start now.
Let me share something else that has changed. Campus Safety.
Why are there so many weird looking people hanging around campus? Is it because it is an open campus?
How do you find out about the student your going to be rooming with?
We all know what has changed about the job market.
Another reason students need to start so early is because of the COMPETITION. We all are familiar with budget and staff cuts due to the recession. Well, students are affected by this as well. Colleges have had to cut back staff too which means they are accepting FEWER students.
And, there are more applications than ever before. More foreign students are applying to US colleges, and foreign students are often considered to be better academically prepared than American students. It is not unusual for some colleges to reject 70 to 80% of the freshman applications for admissions
Let’s practice Habit #4 for a minute. This is the Win-Win Habit that sees life as a cooperative arena, not a competitive one. Win-win means agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying and work together for the best result.
So, Students, lets talk about what can you do without? What sacrifices and compromises are you willing to make now, to secure your education?
How much money might your parents be able to put back toward your education if you choose a lower cell phone plan? Fewer trips to McDonalds or the nail salon? Wearing those running shoes for a few more weeks?
And Parents adult students, I’m not letting you off the hook either. We all know how expensive cigarettes can be.
We’ve spent the last 15 minutes addressing challenges and concerns, now lets offer some solutions.
CSE has been the solution for many families. At CSE our families are not alone.
Our students have access to their own private password protected website , at CSE we call this the Student Portal. This is the gateway to all the learning and resource platforms and other forms of communication between the families and the coaches.
The Student Portal provides access to the student’s Personal Academic Mission Statement, the student profile, academic resume, assessments, college testing prep (such as PSAT, TOEFL, LSAT, GMAT,) college search tool, webinars, timetables and more.
In addition the Student Portal provides access to an on-line library, a series of college tour videos, GPA calculator, maps, tables, formulas and much more, including a news channel designed just for students to stay abreast of current events.
There is the Social Media Connection which acts like a mini Facebook, It is accessible only to enrolled students to allow secure interaction with their parents and with other program families. There is a totally separate chat room for our coaches and students that is also available with screen-sharing, as well as Blackboard.
Both students and parents will receive training on the use of these tools.
Parents, how may of you believe that life readiness skills are critical to life success?
At CSE our students receive unlimited college planning and life skills coaching using the “7 Habits of Highly Successful People” as the underlining , habit forming principles.
through a live, interactive global collaboration platform.
Individual Learning Plan with measurable goals
How many of you are familiar with Blackboard technology?

Some of the sessions are live and some are pre-recorded coaching sessions. There are guest lecturers, and prerecorded orientation on various topics like “ Personal Finance and Money Management. And, all sessions are archived in several languages for future review.
Is anyone familiar with the writer and documentary film producer G. Edward Griffin or his best selling book “The Creature from Jekyll Island”? The Creature from Jekyll Island” is the story of the Federal Reserve. Maybe some of you business majors are familiar with it.
It sounds pretty creepy but its’ actually very interesting. Mr. Griffin is part of our coaching team here at CSE and heads up our Personal Finance and Money Management Division.
Students, how many of you know where money comes from? Assuming it doesn’t grow on trees (SILENCE) this includes my college students who are NOT business majors.
Parents, how do we expect our students to gain a level of respect for THEIR hard earned money when they no little to nothing about where it comes from or it’s history?
Through one of the live webinar sessions, Mr. Griffin breaks down “ The Creature from Jekyll Island” so that young people and recent college grads can understand what the Federal Reserve is? Where does money comes from and more.
There are several other customized webinars for:
Student Athletes led by our coaches who are professional athlete sand athletic Performance specialists.

“I don’t live in the United States and I don’t plan to attend college in the US. Can my parents and I still benefit from the CSE program?”
Yes. Our program operates internationally and our coaches and tutors are often located remotely and speak several different languages. The coaches are very knowledgeable about the visa and travel requirements for students. We even have a Special Services division working with Undocumented Students. And yes, there is aid available for Undocumented Students.
Now lets talk about how the coaching team helps students find Great Match Career Fields.
Initially students take two assessments to help identify career options that interest them and why.
National Academic Evaluation
For the student who is the big cheese at their current school, this test will show how they stack up against other students globally. These are the students you will compete against for admission to your top choice school.
For undergraduate students…what is the QUALITY of the education your receiving… how do you CURRENTLY stack up…Do we need to consider other options NOW!
Personality Styles Assessment
This will reveal your talents, gifts and abilities. Are you a quiet, laid back introvert, or a loud energetic extrovert? Students learn how personalities affect the career field and college major they choose so they are not headed down a path that doesn’t fit their style.
All of our coaches have taken these test too, and we use the information to match them with students who have similar styles.
For undergraduate students…make sure you are CURRENTLY pursuing the right field of study and major, do we need to consider other options NOW!
Once “good fit” career options are identified, coaches discuss which colleges or universities offer the very best education in that particular field of study. There are many things you need to know about admission to a specific college:
Requirements
What kind of grades are expected?
What classes should you be taking, not just to graduate but to meet requirements of a specifc department or division?
Which extracurricular activities will be most beneficial?
What kind of essays will you need to write?
Do you know if this college has a reputation in your chosen field for launching students into a career, not just granting a degree?
Will you have an in-person interview or an audition?
What they don’t tell you
How high or low is their loan default rate?
Graduation Rate?
Freshman Retention
Safety
Merit aid availability
Off campus leaning environment
Corp. recruitment reputation
This is the case for undergraduate as well as graduate and professional studies programs.
Our coaches work with a variety of tools to help the student answer these questions and eliminate wasted time and energy. Once the top choice colleges are identified, the student and parents can use the Virtual US Campus Tours series to get lots more detailed information without the added time and travel cost.
Students, do you know what kind of learner you are? How can you build strong study skills if you don’t know HOW you learn?
One of the most important things to know about yourself as a student is your Learning Style. You will take an assessment and find out if you’re a visual, auditory or hands-on learner. Once you know what kind of learner you are, our coaches and tutors will help you build strong study skills that fit your style and make all your study sessions more productive.
Undergrad and Graduate level students, this applies to you too…Do we need to make adjustments?????
Skills and Talents in your Family and Blood Line
This assessment is lots of fun and very interesting. Have you ever wondered where your uniqueness begins? Maybe your bloodline is linked to George Washington, Nelson Mandela, Caesar Chavez, Pocahontas or Gandhi.
Achievement, self-esteem and admiration are qualities that we embrace through practicing Habit #2 – begin with the end in mind (What do you want to be remembered for?) This assessment is optional but a really cool way to go back in time and discover from where and whom did you come from.
Now, lets talk about your plans to PAY for college.
Some colleges and universities will offer you more or less financial aid than others. You want to find out who offers the most. And following the financial aid trail is like tracking a moving target. Many families know very little about obtaining financial aid for college and even those that do may not have the time and energy for vigorous pursuit.
For example, a college of your choice just got a $2 million endowment. Your student is well qualified for entering their Nursing program so you’re very excited about having this money available. What you didn’t know is that all that money is earmarked for the School of Engineering.
Now you’re a little smarter and have found that another of your college choices has received $1 million for the Nursing Department. This sounds good. But what you didn’t know is that the money is for Nursing Education, which means it will be used to train their professors who need more education in Nursing, not student aid.
At CSE our families do not have to face these frustrating situations. The close advice and guidance of our professional and certified Scholarship and Financial Aid Coaches is essential to getting all the financial aid for which the student and family are qualified. The government is changing the rules as we speak, and our job is to help you get the job done accurately and promptly.
I want to present two questions to you and please give it serious consideration.
Students, Is Higher Education (College) a RIGHT or a PRIVALEGE? (wait on response)
AND
Parents, Is it the government or families Responsibility to Pay for college? (wait on response)
The last sentence of Article 26, Part 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, states
…….higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit. This means that the government does NOT have to offer nor make available any form of NEED based aid; Grants and Loans. Do you believe we live in times where the US can afford to give every single student, who wants to attend college, financial aid or more particularly, student loans? What would you do if the government stop offering grants and loans tomorrow?
What is financial aid?
Well, there are really two types – Gift Aid and Self Help Aid.
Gift aid is just that, a gift and doesn’t have to be paid back. There are two kinds forms of gift aid – Need Based and Merit Based.
Need Based aid is based on your family’s financial circumstances, or their income. The less money your parent have, the more need based aid you qualify for. But don’t be fooled – many families that make over $90,000 still qualify for need based aid, as it is partly determine by the overall cost of the school.
The source of funds for Need Based Aid is federal fund, state funds and the colleges and universities themselves. And there are some limits. A Grant is a gift that doesn’t have to be repaid, but you can only quality for $5,550 per year, which won’t go far in paying for a $30,000 a year education.
Merit based aid is not determined by financial circumstances, but is based on being particularly good or worthy or deserving of reward. There is over $25 billion a year of merit aid available and it comes from the colleges and universities as an enticement to get students of “merit” to go to school there. And, it is renewable every as long as you maintain the required GPA.
Merit relates to your accomplishments as a student. For High school students this can include sports, cheerleading, performing arts such as acting or singing, community activities, your grades, and your SAT and ACT test scores.
For Undergraduate and Graduate students this can include internships, research, fellowships, SABBATICALS, our grades, your MCAT, LSAT, GMAT or GRE test scores
Anyone know what a SABBATICAL is?
It is a break from your routine job so you can perform research, travel etc… for your employer, and you get PAID, just like going to work everyday but you are learning and teaching AND getting credit for it.
This is where students have the ability to influence getting financial as, as “he who works hardest gets the most”.
Self Help Aid is NOT a gift. You have to do something to get it and you may have to pay it back. Work Study is a form of Self Help Aid that doesn’t have to be repaid, but you do have to do something to get it such as work in the cafeteria, library or dorm.
And last, are educational loans. Sadly, this is the form of aid most families utilize.
From a practical point of view, parents and students must fill out a 12 page document known as the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The application is free, but the money you might get as a result may not be free. The result of completing the FAFSA is a SAR or Student Aid Report .
At CSE our financial aid coaches will review this with you because any errors will send it right to the bottom of the pile and can cost you many aid opportunities. The SAR is what the colleges see first so it must be as perfect as possible. The SAR will contain a calculated number called the EFC / Expected Family Contribution, and this is the amount the family is expected to contribute.
Then there is the CSS Profile or College Scholarship Service , this is the financial aid application of the college board, not the federal govt.
So, the combination of Gift Aid and Self Help Aid is your total financial aid package. The total is not the same at all schools, as they offer different types of aid for different circumstances.
And getting aid is not just filling out forms, but having a strategic plan worked out with our coaches and financial experts who can drill down to the essence of your individual situation and present sound, logical options for you and your family.
For foreign students, there is private aid that is NOT based on need but on merit.
Some international students may benefit from specific tax treaties between the US and their country. Some tax treaties exempt student awards from taxes, depending on the visa type, type of award, and length of time in the United States.
International students are not eligible for the US government aid programs (Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan, PLUS Loan, and Federal Work-Study). However, many schools will ask international students to submit a FAFSA so that they may use the data for assessing financial need.
Before filing a FAFSA, international students should work with their coaches to find out what procedure they should use to apply for aid at the selected school
More and more US companies are attracted to the academic competitiveness of foreign students and are awarding them more financial aid than ever before,! This includes undocumented students.

I’d like to share with you the difference between College Survival Experience and some other college planning programs. There are twelve things you need to ask about any program you are considering.
First - CSE is based on the 7 Habits Principles. Top fortune 500 companies use these same principles to build their leaders. Most other programs are not research or principle based.
Second – At CSE you have an entire coaching team that works directly with you and your parents. The coach to student ratio is approx 1:30. Most programs don’t assign specific coaches, so you just get whoever happens to be working when you call, and you may be one of several hundred students that coach works with.
Third – At CSE you receive your own tool kit that includes a digital tablet and a wide range of live and online resources. In many other programs you receive a user name, password, a few phone numbers and emails.
Fourth – At CSE you will receive unlimited tutoring in math, science, English and foreign languages. Most programs do not offer tutoring.
Fifth – At CSE your program lasts until you no longer need it; through undergraduate, graduate or professional school. Many other programs last only through high school, ending when you go off to college even though they’re called “unlimited”.
Sixth – At CSE you will have both scheduled and unscheduled contact through phone calls, email and video conferencing. Coaches will contact you. Most programs operate like gym memberships; if you don’t contact them, then you don’t get service.
Seventh – AT CSE our coaches are degreed, certified and trained. Most program’s coaches are not licensed or certified.
Eighth – At CSE you will find former college coaches, NCAA staff and even professional athletes. We have commissioned military officers, ROTC recruiters, renowned fashion designers, accomplished actors, special needs case manager and more as a part of our Specialty Division. Most programs do not have specialty division for students with specific interests or talents.
Ninth – CSE’s parent company has been assisting students and families since 1996. Most programs have been around for less than 5 years.
Tenth – We are a proud member in good standing with the National Association for College Admission Counseling, Better Business Bureau, The Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Alliance for Excellent Education.
Eleventh – CSE coaches are required to personally visit college campuses and their key campus staff, annually, as part of their re-certification process. Most other program coaches use the internet to obtain information about specific college campuses.
Twelfth – CSE publishes prices and program details on its website and upholds the value of transparency – there is nothing to hide. Many other program websites don’t have prices and are scarce on details.
Enrollment at CSE is simple. It is based on:
Individual or a family plan (up to 3 students)
and
The student grade level at entry into the program.
