Getty House Has a Long History in Los Angeles
Paul & Leta Paulson purchased the land in 1920 and completed the building of their home in 1921 at a cost of $83,000. Can anyone tell the group how much money that would be today?
$1,005,000.00 Can anyone tell the group how much money that would be today?
Mr. & Mrs. Paulson hired Gabriel Meyer and Philip Holler as architects to design their house. Does anyone know of other famous Los Angeles buildings designed by Meyer & Holler?
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood
Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre
Mr. Paulson chose the architects’ stately English Tudor Style for the house.
Mr. & Mrs. Leslie Lockhart bought the house in 1928, and made a number of significant changes. The attic was converted into a play-room for their two young children.
Mr. Lockhart added the room you’re sitting in right now. In addition to the game room, he installed a bar and a vault.
Since the house was already built, and there was no way to dig without disturbing it, workmen had to excavate this underground room by removing the dirt one bucket-full at a time!
The Lockharts redecorated the house, and it was featured in a 1929 issue of Architectural Digest
Mr. & Mrs. Lockhart hired noted landscape designer A. E. Hanson to design the one-acre garden, which you will see later.
A. E. Hanson was noted for designing extensive gardens for movie stars, civic leaders and other Los Angeles celebrities. Hanson’s design firm was very successful through the 1920s, until the start of The Great Depression.
Can anyone tell us what momentous occasion started The Great Depression? The Stock Market Crash of 1929.
When the Lockharts moved out in 1930, a number of tenants moved in over the years.

Getty House was donated to the City of Los Angeles in 1975 as the Official Residence of the Mayor of Los Angeles. The Hon. Thomas J. “Tom” Bradley, Mayor of Los Angeles {1973-1993}, moved into Getty House in 1977, and lived here for three of his four historic terms of office.
Mayor Riordan and his wife Nancy Daly stayed in their own home, choosing to use Getty House for hosting dignitaries and other official functions.
However, Getty House was in need of repair, especially after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
Between 1993 and 1995, Nancy Daly led the effort to restore Getty House.

Can anyone answer the following question? Who are the most important visitors to Getty House? YOU! The Future of Los Angeles!
At Do you know why you are important? Because you will play an important role in running Los Angeles one day! To understand L.A., you need to learn about its past…
Can someone tell us what is the original name of  Los Angeles? El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula  {The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of the River of Porziuncola}
Besides Los Angeles, is there another commonly used nickname we use for our city? L. A.
L.A. became a part of Mexico in 1821, following its independence from Spain. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood.
On November 5, 1913, the 233-mile Los Angeles Aqueduct brought water from the Owens Valley in Central California to a reservoir in the San Fernando Valley. William Mulholland’s project required over 2,000 workers and 164 tunnels, and transformed Los Angeles.
Where else have you heard the name of William Mulholland?
The Los Angeles Railway (later renamed Los Angeles Transit Lines) operated from 1901 to 1963. The system was purchased by Henry Huntington in 1898.
The system contained over 20 streetcar lines through the core of the city. Hancock Park, where Getty House is located, was served by one of the lines.
Where else have you heard the name Huntington within the Los Angeles area?
Completed in 1928, the Los Angeles City Hall building was designed by John Parkinson, John C. Austin, and Albert C. Martin, Sr.
It has 32 floors and, at 454 feet high, is the tallest base-isolated structure in the world, having undergone a seismic retrofit that will allow the building to sustain minimal damage and remain functional after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake.

at Los Angeles is broken up into 15 districts. Each district is represented by a City Council-person. Looking at the map, can you find your council district? Can you name your City Council-person?
