The Spaniards arrived first in the area in 1542 .
They wrote about a "magnificent river" and the area was
called ' Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de la Porciuncula

After the Yankees took over the power in the area ,
thousands came to California during the Gold Rush.
City of Los Angeles was officially founded in 1850. The
railroad came to town in 1876 . In 1892, oil was found in
the area and in 1923 a quarter of the world 's crude oil
production was in Los Angeles .
The water was the most important for the city 's
development. In 1913, they made the Los Angeles
Aqueduct, a 223 -mile-long aqueduct that supplied
water from the Owens River to the city. Primarily this is
attributable to the city's growth after 1915.
