4. Gold was discovered in 1849, and in one year SF grew from
1,000 to 100,000 people
- Lots of people moved to SF
from all over the world
- By the end of 1850, the Gold
rush was over, but people kept
coming to California (the 31st
state)
5. The Gold Rush brought workers to SF, who later brought
their families
6. In 1906 there was a giant earthquake (7.9 magnitude)
The earthquake started a fire which burned 80% of SF
7. In 1960’s San Francisco became the city most famous for
the Hippie movement
- They did not want violence, but peace and
love
- SF became a hub for counter-culture
13. Coit tower, named for Lillie Coit, a firefighter and lover of SF
When Lillie died, she left her 2
million to the city “for the
