· Abstract Expressionism
. Also known as the New York School. The first major American avant-garde movement, Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York City in the 1940s. The artists produced abstract paintings that expressed their state of mind and that they hoped would strike emotional chords in viewers. The movement developed along two lines: gestural abstraction and chromatic abstraction.
· Action painting
. Also called gestural abstraction. The kind of Abstract Expressionism practiced by Jackson Pollock, in which the emphasis was on the creation process, the artist's gesture in making art. Pollock poured liquid paint in linear webs on his canvases, which he laid out on the floor, thereby physically surrounding himself in the painting during its creation.
· Assemblage
. An artwork constructed from already existing objects.
· Chromatic abstraction
. A kind of Abstract Expressionism that focused on the emotional resonance of color, as exemplified by the work of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.
· Color field painting
. A variant of Post-Painterly Abstraction in which artists sought to reduce painting to its physical essence by pouring diluted paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing these pigments to soak into the fabric, as exemplified by the work of Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis.
· Conceptual art
. An American avant-garde art movement of the 1960s that asserted that the "artfulness" of art lay in the artist's idea rather than its final expression.
· Deconstruction
. An analytical strategy developed in the late 20th century according to which all cultural "constructs" (art, architecture, and literature) are "texts." People can read these texts in a variety of ways, but they cannot arrive at fixed or uniform meanings. Any interpretation can be valid, and readings differ from time to time, place to place, and person to person. For those employing this approach, deconstr ...

The artful results of soul searching by members of the Yale and New Haven communities were on display in the Cushing/Whitney Rotunda of the Yale School of Medicine. The exhibition featured dozens of artists' richly varied journals produced in classes and workshops titled "Visual Journal: Imaging the Interior" taught by artist Constance Pierce, a lecturer at the Yale Divinity School. Pierce says of her work,"Image journaling merges the healing qualities of journal writing and image-making in potent combination. The process encourages compassion and inner renewal. It also brings awareness to the innate connections between the arts, humanities and medicine."

I am compelled by Biblical narrative expressed in a contemporary idiom. I often work with images of pilgrimage, lamentation, absolution and rebirth. Such images flesh out parable and reveal to me the ancient archetypes once again reborn in our world of dissonance and division. These sacred texts, in all of their consuming drama, are played out in our most inward journeys. Christ and Judas abide within each of us. I need to be vulnerable to the synchronistic entrance of the spiritual, for the spirit uses sentient forms as metaphor.

"Sketching Museum Masters" ~ UM Museum Art Studio workshop
1.
2. "Sketching Museum Masters"
Museum Art Studio Workshop
July 16th and 17th 2016
Abstract:
Numerous artists throughout history have learned by paraphrasing the works of
earlier masters. Manet reinterpreted Delacroix. Van Gogh, in his idiosyncratic
style, copied El Greco and Cezanne’s influence flooded Picasso’s early work.
In the 20th century, drip painter Jackson Pollock filled his early sketchbooks with
studies of master drawings and the young "second-generation" abstract
expressionist Grace Hartigan painted her way through Rubens and Velasquez.
The University Museum art studio and art galleries offer an introduction to
exploring this exciting approach in a weekend afternoon workshop July 16 and
17th. The two-step process is especially useful for museum sketching in particular,
because the wet medium is utilized in the art studio before - and also after - the dry
media sketching that is required in all gallery and museum environments.
Part I ~ Saturday ~ In the Museum’s Art Studio:
You will learn to prepare your Bristol Vellum paper in advance by exploring ways
to create delicate watercolor monotypes hand-pressed off of canvas paper. Then
(while monotypes are drying) we will practice “paraphrase” sketching of master
drawings while experimenting with Faber Castell watercolor pencils and water.
Part II ~ Sunday ~ Sketching in the Museum galleries:
We will utilize the dry watercolor monotypes created the prior afternoon and will
gesturally sketch over them when viewing works on site in the museum galleries.
A surprising synchronicity emerges as the sketches combine with the nuanced
background colors of the monotypes. To complete the afternoon, we will return to
the art studio to add a few final accents for emphasis with brush and water.
