Six Pillars Of Character Essay
Crafting an essay on the "Six Pillars of Character" can be a challenging yet rewarding task. The
complexity lies not only in presenting a comprehensive understanding of the six pillars but also
in weaving together a narrative that seamlessly incorporates personal reflections, relevant
examples, and a thoughtful analysis. It requires a deep exploration of the values associated with
each pillar — trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship — and
the ability to articulate their significance in different contexts.
The challenge further intensifies when attempting to strike a balance between theoretical
concepts and practical applications. One must navigate through philosophical discussions on
ethics and morality while grounding the essay in real-life scenarios to make it relatable and
impactful. The task demands not only a solid grasp of the subject matter but also an adept skill
in expressing ideas coherently.
Moreover, synthesizing information from various sources, including academic literature, personal
experiences, and examples from diverse fields, adds another layer of difficulty. Crafting a well-
structured essay requires careful planning, outlining, and revision to ensure a logical flow of
ideas and a coherent argument.
Successfully tackling the "Six Pillars of Character" essay necessitates critical thinking, analytical
prowess, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner. It is an
exercise in not only academic writing but also personal reflection and application of ethical
principles.

Journal 1 What impact has the Canadian Social and Political history on writing of
Joy Mannette and Denise Chong? Both authors Joy Mannette and Denise Chong
have written different articles about racism and discrimination .First article My
Dearest Child is written by Joy Mannette and the other one The Concubine s
Children is written by Denise Chong. Both of these articles reflected how the black
and Chinese immigrants suffered in Canada in 17th and 19th century. But now as we
all know Canada is a multicultural country. Everyone respect each other s culture and
religion. The first article My Dearest Child is a letter written by a white mother Joy
Mannette to her African Canadian child. In this letter, she explained how their

Her writings buttress the fact that although we all have different colours, we have
the same colour of blood running through our veins. In conclusion, these two
authors, looking back now to what has become of Canada would be happy at the
transformation that has taken place between then and now. The points system in
place now is based not on your country of origin but on your skills. The
immigration and multicultural act sees immigrants as having all the rights and
privileges accorded to any white person. Next Emphasizing of Canadian social and
political history, the writing of Denise Chong and Joy Mannette shows that many
different groups and classes of people that constitute the Canadian society and the
help of individuals, have somehow influenced the history of Canada. From the
writing of Denise Chong, from The concubine s children , we can clearly observe
that Chinese were unwelcome in Canada to a degree where special taxes levied on
the Chinese for school and policing, employment, laundry, shoes, even cigars and
even bared from becoming naturalized citizens, from owning land, from working on
public works (56). Such opposition did not prevent the government to bring one
exception to the rule, claiming that the Chinese would work for much less, were
more reliable than the available white labour and many Chinese were assigned the
most dangerous job (57). Moreover, newspapers and politicians alike pandered to

Billy Teased The Little Kid
Hey! Stop it, get away little Danny bellowed as he was getting picked on by Billy the
big bad bully. Let me just eat my lunch in peace.
What s the matter? Are you going to go cry to your mommy for help? Billy teased
the little kid.
Billy was a troubled kid who always seemed to enjoy bringing his own frustrations
and problems out on others, mostly that were smaller than him. At home, Billy
didn t have the support from his parents as some others might have. Some seem to
think this is why he acts the way he is. Billy has always been a big kid, starting
from when he was 5 3 just at the age of 10 years old, dominating everyone on the
football field. Now, Billy is 15 and stands at 6 2, and continues dominating the game.
He has always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Compared to him, billy looked like he atleast had a good foot on him, if not even
more. Danny got up and started to back away as billy came closer and closer,
eventually pinning him up against the wall. Once billy had danny where he wanted
him, he reached back, groped for the mash potatoes, keeping a dead eye look at him.
He then grabbed a handful, and then POP! Danny lay cold on the cafeteria floor, with
mash potatoes smear across his nose and mouth. He had been knocked out.
ВЁOOOOHHHH!ВЁ you heard from all the kids at lunch when the initial punch
happened.
The lunch aids and gym teachers came rushing to the scene
ВЁWhat happened here,ВЁ asked one of the gym teachers.
Billy punched danny in the face! screamed one of the students from across the other
side of the room with a smirk.
Come with me. the teachers and aides told billy.
They grabbed him by the arms and dragged him to the office. But man did he put up
a fight, freeing one arm and trying to run. He made halfway down the hall until one
of the gym teachers tackled him in his trail.
You re in a lot of trouble kid. said the aide.
If only billy actually knew how much.
As billy was literally being dragged by the two biggest gym teachers in the school,
he saw that he was being hawked down by all the students. The students stay in
astonishment, as there was a kid being dragged down the hallway to the principal s
office. Billy didn t care much of it. He was the biggest baddest
Information Retention And The Level Of Retention Essay
4.1QUANTITATIVE DATA
Total participants: n = 14
Undergraduate students in the Clayton Campusn = 14
14 students in total from the Clayton Campus responded to the online survey, ranging
from Undergraduate degrees such as Arts/Business/Science/Bio Medicine and
Commerce.
Level of distraction and information retention
Figure 1: Undergraduate s response to distraction
Figure 2: Undergraduate s response to the level of retention It was surprising and
unexpected to see that although the students may be distracted by their own music,
their level of retention is reasonably high, with the majority of the students
remembering between 60 to 80 percent of the information that they have processed.
Factors that may have influenced this outcome could be alluded to the fact that once
the students have created a calm and accustomed studying atmosphere, that they can
properly engage in it and retain such a high level of information.
Studying with and without music
Figure 3: Whether or not the participant has studied for a long period of time without
music Figure 4: Whether or not the participant feels more productive when studying
with music With allusion to the previous set of questions (Figures 1 2), slightly more
than half of the students have answered that they have felt more productive when
studying with music, which may reinforce the high retention rate. This may be the
contributing factor via the creation of a comfortable environment, thus making it
easier for the student to
The Epilogue Analysis
The most pressing issue involving communication, gender, and culture would be
acceptance. Individuals need to take into consideration that even though they want
many aspects to remain the same, things are bound to change.
After reading the Epilogue and the textbook, I realize that we need to be willing to
accept what families decide is the best choice for the work load among both parents.
Growing up with both my parents working outside the house helped me appreciate
both members and what they were able to contribute to the family. This also helps me
realize that even though one family member may decide to stay home, that does not
make them any less important to the family overall. A statement that Julia Wood
made in the Epilogue stood out to me. She says that As women and men, you can
affect what society expects of and admires in each sex (Wood, 321). This showed me
that we have the ability to impact the gender roles society holds. It is important to not
judge a father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many things in society that people find offensive. As the next decade
comes into view, there needs to be emphasis placed on grasping the differences in
each individual person which would help us realize that not everyone reacts to
things the same. Wood continues to talk in the Epilogue about our generation
taking the time to recognize that not everyone is the same in the world. She says
Maybe your generation will replace the melting pot metaphor with one that
recognizes commonality without obliterating real and valuable differences among
people (Wood, 322). I think that she makes a great point here. We have been raised
to understand that there is a melting pot in our society. This idea may need to
change in order to better suite what each person needs. It is important to recognize
that we are not robots in society today. Each and every one of us wants to feel
accepted for who we are as unique
The London Blitz Essay
In September of 1940 through May of 1941 there was a strategic bombing attack
that was lead by the Germans targeted towards London and other cities located in
England, this was known as The Blitz. The Germans aimed the bombs mostly at
populated cities, dock yards, and factories.
The bombing on London began on September 7, 1940 and lasted for 57
consecutive nights. During these nights of bombing people took shelter in warehouse
basements, and in underground subway stations with no privacy and poor sanitation
facilities.
British radar, detected the huge formation, the Observer Corps started to count the
mass of German bombers in the sky, then came a warning call, ... Show more content

The bombing actually brought the English people
together.
Between five and six o clock on the evening of Saturday 7th September, some
320 German bombers supported by over 600 fighters flew up the Thames and
proceeded to bomb Woolwich Arsenal, Beckton gas Works, a large number of
docks, West Ham Power Station, and then the city, Westminster and Kensington.
They succeeded in causing a serious fire situation in the docks. An area about 1ВЅ
square miles between North Woolwich Road and the Thames was almost
destroyed, and the population of Silvertown was surrounded by fire and had to be
evacuated by water. At 8.10pm some 250 bombers resumed the attack which was
maintained until 4.30 on Sunday morning. They caused 9 conflagrations, 59 large
fires, and nearly 1,000 lesser fires. Three main line railway termini were put out
of action, and 430 persons killed and some 1,600 seriously injured. After the fire
brigades had spent all day in an effort to deprive the enemy of illumination, some
200 bombers returned in the evening (Sunday 8th) to carry on the assault. During
The Importance Of Moral Isolationism
According to Mary Midgley, moral isolationism consists in simply denying that we
can never understand any culture except our own well enough to make judgements
about it (Midgley, 322). Midgley argues that moral isolationism is incorrect and it is
illogical. She argues this by saying that it is possible for outsiders to judge foreign
cultures, but moral isolationism is illogical because it excludes any kind of judgment.
She also exposes that judgment is tied to respect and moral isolationism excludes
barriers such as intermixing cultures. I believe that judgment of other cultures is
crucial to the existence of moral values. Without judgment, individuals would not
have their own opinions because judgment goes hand in hand with opinion. However,
when one is judging another culture, they should be aware that their judgment should
be respectful and take moral relativism into retrospect. We have to be ethical and fully
understand that cultures vary when criticizing another culture. If we do not
understand Ruth Benedict s belief of moral relativism, then we are not lawful to
judge another culture.
In her essay, Midgley notes that moral isolationism is incoherent because judgment
is an opinion, and is directly related to respect. It may appeal to some that moral
isolationism is respectful, but it is not because it entirely arrogant. Nobody can
respect what is entirely unintelligible to them...to respect someone, we have to know
enough about him to make a favorable judgement, however general and tentative.
And we do not understand people in other cultures to this extent. Otherwise a great
mass of our most valuable thinking would be paralyzed (Midgley, 322). In order to
respect a culture, judgment has to be involved. Due to this discrepancy, moral
isolationism cannot make sense. For a rightful judgment, one should first understand
the foreign culture that they are examining. Once an individual is fully
knowledgeable of another culture s ways, it is possible to make a rightful judgment.
Whether the judgment is a good one, or a bad one, it is still necessary for one to
gain full knowledge.
In relation to judgment, I do believe that cultures should judge each other. I think
judgment plays an important role when

Individuals serving in PA positions also serve at the pleasure of the President. But,
unlike PASs, these positions may be appointed by the President without Senate
confirmation.
Noncareer SES (NC SES)
As discussed in Chapter 1, the SES includes most of the top managerial,
supervisory, and policy positions in the Executive branch. Only 10 percent of SES
positions may be filled by noncareer appointees. NC SES appointees do not require
Senate confirmation and may be removed from their position at any time. NC SES
appointees must, like career SES executives, meet the executive core qualifications
(ECQs) that are set by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). NC SES
appointees include individuals who are responsible for formulating, advocating, and

Problems also arise when Cabinet officers believe that political deals are being
struck without their knowledge and involvement. White House executives view
these factors as requisite to advancing the President s broader political agenda.
However, career executives often know more than political executives do as these
matters are being discussed due to their network. Thus, it is unwise for political
executives not to confer with the career executive corps prior to redressing others in
the political hierarchy.
Dispute Resolution
The majority of White House departmental controversies are resolved by the
President s Chief of Staff. Other disputes are collegially resolved by the respective
office directors and Cabinet officers. Reaching consensus on the issues involved and
soothing ruffled feathers are the key to achieving accommodation. However, on the
most controversial matters, the President settles the dispute. In the event that one
party cannot accept another s point of view and be a team player, the political
accountability protocol is

each of the school levels (elementary, middle, and high school)?
In elementary the student at the informing stage and just getting acclimated to
gymnastics and dance. These student will learn basic body management from general
space, body management, performing symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes, and
narrow and wide stances. A teacher should make sure every student is learningthe
skills needed, so when they get to middle school they will not be discouraged. In
middle school the students are in the refining stage, and should have a basic
understanding of their body, but have not mastered it. These student have enough
learned skills to start putting sequences and/or routines together starting from shapes,
rolls, and using some equipment. This knowledge shows the cognitive understanding
of what was learned at the elementary level. Also, they will be able to flow with
music. A teacher at this level should have the student make sure student can make a
routine and practice. While high school student are in the applying stage, and will
have the knowledge to put a well defined routine together for display. This students
will have a good understanding of
Effective Communication Style Analysis
Communication is one of the main things humans do in their day to day activities.
Scholars define communication as an act of exchanging information between one
another and understanding the meaning of it (Semenescu, 2016). The four mains
types of communication are written, verbal, non verbal and visual. Humans
communicate to establish relationship, build foundation for planning, socializing in
general and motivating each other. Communicationcan vary in different settings. For
example in personal context, communication style used is more relaxed, which
means that informal language is used. However, in a professional context,
communication style used in more focused on workplace. Therefore, the language
used is more formal so as to show respect... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, an individual should have a positive attitude about communication through
understanding that others see things differently. In this case, one should have the
ability to predict the feeling and attitude of the receiver. The person sending the
message should be very clear in his mind about what he wants to say. He should know
the aims of his message and, therefore, his thoughts should be arranged in a proper
order that will not confuse the receiver. In addition to that, the speaker should make it
easy for the listener through taking everything into consideration. One good example
is language, the senders can understand the words that he/she is using to send the
message but to the other end, they are combined with different perceptions. People
around the globe speak different languages, although some speak same but the
meaning and the use of the words can be different from yours. Furthermore, to
overcome barriers to communication, listeners should give feedback because it is the
mirror of communication. Therefore, this means that without feedback,
communication is no way. However, that feedback should be helpful rather than
hurtful. Both ends should see feedback as a problem in perception rather than a
problem of discovering

According to A Surveillance Society by William E. Thompson and Joseph V.
Hickey, cameras are becoming more common to people nowadays. They are
everywhere in almost all government and corporate offices, and many social and
public places like malls and stores. Britain has been the most active in this trend;
putting cameras in some trouble spots for public safety. Additionally, since the 9/11
terrorist attacks, the United States has been trying to catch up. The government then
passed the USA PATRIOT Act
which expanded its authority to spy on private citizens.
Furthermore, the new surveillancesystems became more advance; it can not only
scan places, but also analyze the scene, thus, it can now record, store, and index
images. High tech surveillance devices are growing in number and use across urban

Discussions were formed about how much personal privacy people were willing to
give for the promise of safety from terrorists. However, surveillance devices such as
high quality cameras and mobile devices are also available to the public and can be
easily ordered from retailers this could potentially make everyone part of the security
system. According to sociologist David Lyon, new surveillance systems have become
a major social institution that affects social relationships, people s identities, personal
space, freedom, and dignity. Data images are considered as the looking glass that
provides social judgements about who we are . Finally, despite of increasing identity
theft, spying, selling of personal information, and other technological invasion many
people see the benefits of surveillance outweighing the risks. Although it is unequally
distributed, new surveillance, in fact, both have its positive and negative

Genetically Modified Organisms, Or Gmos, Are Genetically
Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, are genetically modified plants, animals,
or microorganisms whose genetic information has been modified by DNA editing
methods such as DNA splicing or gene modification. This modification creates
unstable combinations of plant, animal, or bacterial genes that are not found in
nature (GMO Facts). It is the right of the consumer to know exactly what they are
consuming. However, in the United States, it is not required that food containing
GMOs has to be labeled, despite the fact that in 2015, 93% of Americans believed
that genetically modified foodshould be labeled (GMO Facts). Foods containing
GMOs should indeed be labeled because the consumer deserves to know what is in

Bacteria develops an immunity to antibodies when genes go through natural
mutation. When attaching a desired gene to an antibiotic resistance gene the new
GM plant can be tested by growing it in a solution containing the corresponding
antibiotic (GMO: Harmful Effects). If the plant survives, scientists know that it
has taken an antibiotic resistance gene along with the desired gene. Because of
this, there is concern that bacteria living in humans and animals could pick up
antibiotic resistance (GMO: Harmful Effects). Genetically modified foods should
also be labeled because those who are environmentally conscience would not
purchase objects that have been genetically modified. Genetically modified crops
are engineered to resist strong herbicides. As a result, the use of toxic herbicides
has increased by 16 percent. Because of this, herbicide resistant super weeds and
super bugs have developed which requires stronger chemicals, such as 2, 4 D
(which is an ingredient that can be found in the toxic Agent Orange). This chemical,
2, 4 D is known to cause various types of cancers and deformities (Reno). Another
chemical, glyphosate, which can be found in Roundup, is being used on genetically
modified plants. Glyphosphate is a known carcinogen; and we have been ingesting it
as a result of the consumption of genetically modified foods (Cassidy). It has been
proven that farmers who are exposed to glyphosphate are
Stakeholders in Nursing Programs Evaluation Process
Part 1 Stakeholders on Nursing Programs Evaluation Process First, we must ask who
the stakeholders are when it comes to any nursing program. This is a wide universe,
for the stakeholders are many. First, of course, we have instructors at the university
level, most of whom have been or are practicing professionals. Then there are the
administrators of the program who must continually search out money and grants to
keep the program going. We then move into the public sector: patients, families,
physicians, support staff at healthcare facilities, healthcare administration, HMOs,
private insurers, and governmental agencies (Colvin, et.al., 2008). Each has a role to
play within the evaluation process. If we divide these groups, we find some
commonalities: The administrators Each person in charge of any program that has
anything to do with nursing has an effect on the evaluation process. They must be
confident that the quality and consistency of nursing is being met when they
graduate students (accreditation) or hire. They must know that the programs are
meeting state and Federal requirements and must continually lobby for funding to
keep the flow of professional nurses coming as needed. Medical Professionals This
is possibly the most robust of the stakeholder group, and also the most critical. In this
information age, medical technology is changing so rapidly that it is hard to keep up.
Medical professionals, from physicians to specialists to technicians influence the type

What Is The Schlieffen Plan
This paper will examine and discuss the German Schlieffen Plan utilized during
World War I. The Schlieffen Plan was designed by Chief of the General Staff of the
German Army Alfred von Schlieffen, as a strategy for invading France, while also
holding off Russia. Schlieffen wanted the attack to be a swift and decisive strike to
ensure that France would capitulate quickly, allowing Germanyto send their forces on
the French front over to the Russian front, combining their armies into one force that
could then invade Russia. One of the main points of the strategy, was that Germany
would go through Belgiumand attack France where it was weaker, instead of the
Maginot Line, which was heavily fortified. The army would then sweep around and
take Paris.
Mutual Relationships With Mutual Relationship
There is a lot of different opinions when it comes to having a mutual relationship
with a male and female without it being anything more. Many believe that this is not
right because they feel as though that no man and woman could possibly be friends
without any feelings involved in the relationship. This view is often associated with
the person who has a significant other that has a close friend that is of the opposite sex
. Others who have friends that are of the opposite sex feel as though nothing is
wrong with it because they are used to it. I feel as though this topic is rooted to the
fact that it is only for the people that are mature, it is important for people on both
sides to be mature and have clear intentions with both the friend... Show more content

However, people argue that a heterosexual male and female couldn t be friends
because it often ends with them starting a relationship even if they were friends with
the person while they had a significant other. I have also seen this happen where a
friend of mines was friends with a girl that had a boyfriend and he also had a
girlfriend but now they were so close that their friendship has turned into a
relationship. I feel as though if everyone knows the other persons intention it will be
less difficult, even though sometimes their intentions often change.
Communicating with a person of the opposite sex about how you feel emotionally
often helps because something you would not feel comfortable with just venting to
the same sex. Although men seem strong and nothing ever phases them it is
important to have a friend for emotional support. Often men go through things that
hit them emotionally and it is better to have a female to vent to rather than another
male. This is shown when someone loses a family or a tragic situation of that sort,
sure your buddies can give you a word of encouragement but to tell someone how
you feel deep down inside it is helpful to have a female to talk to. Often women are
more comfortable to talk to than a guy about something a male is going through on
an emotional level. Emotionally, females feel as though men create a safer
environment because often times it is hard for them to trust their
Film Form
Week 2 Film: The Wizard of Oz
FORM: is the sum of all parts of the film, unified and given shape by patterns such as
repetition and variation, story lines and character traits.
Film is not the product of a random collection of technical devices, but rather, it is a
system
THE CONCEPT OF FORM IN A FILM
Artworks involve us by engaging our senses, feelings and mind in a process.
The artwork cues the spectator to perform a specific activity.
Example: A poem s words may guide us to imagine a scene, to notice a break in
rhythm or to expect a rhyme
Like all artworks, film is not simply a random batch of elements, film has a form.
Film form is the overall system of relations that we can perceive among the elements

villainous side
A tragic event might be undercut by lighthearted music
Emotional response felt by the spectator
Just as formal Conventions can make us suspend our normal sense of real life
experience; form may lead us to override our everyday emotional responses.
People who we Despise in life may become spellbinding as characters
Wizard of Oz: We might find the land of Ozmuch more appealing than Kansas,
but because the films form leads us to sympathize with Dorothy in her desire to go
home, we feel satisfied when she finally returns home to Kansas.
Expectation spurs emotion
To have an expectation about what will happen is to incest some emotion in the
situation.
Delayed fulfillment of an emotion (suspense), may produce anxiety or sympathy
Gratified expectations may create a feeling of relief
Form and Meaning
When we watch films, we re looking to attribute a deeper significance or meaning to
the artwork as a whole.
As spectators we develop meaning based upon the juxtaposition of images and
sounds in the film, and the way we perceive them is shaped by our own cultural
social experiences.

wants to kayak. He goes into the ranger station to ask about paddling down the
river. The ranger informs him he needs a permit, some experience, and
unfortunately there is a twelve year waiting list. Hearing this from the ranger does
not stand in his way the next morning he is in a kayak, with no care, no life jacket,
no helmet facing the rapids for the first time, learning from the experience. Thoreau
supported Chris s ideas and advocated for individuals to be students of life. In Walden
, Thoreau stated, I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front
only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and
not, when I
Should Fast Food Workers Earn A Living Wage Essay
The debate on whether fast food workers should earn a living wage has been going
on for years. A living wage is considered a wage that allows a person to fulfill their
basic needs. Many fast food workers have families to take care of which can be
difficult with the amount they currently earn. People working in fast fooddeserve to
earn a higher wageso they can support themselves. It is hard to find decent paying
jobs, but people should be able to earn enough to support their families.
Many people believe that fast food workers can live off of $9 an hour. How are
they supposed to survive off of $9 an hour when they need to pay rent, car
payments, and possibly take care of children? Research states $15 an hour is a living
wage, due to inflation. The average American needs to make at least this to meet
their daily needs. The article Mcdonald s Raising its Minimum Wage, but Some Say it
s Not Enough shows that McDonald s and many companies are trying to increase
salaries but it still isn t enough. It was stated in PRO/CON Living Wage for Fast

The reality is that salaries have not been increasing fast enough to keep up with
inflation. In the article PRO/CON: Living Wage for Fast food Workers? it states
that It would be $17 per hour today instead of a meager $7.25 proving that salary is
not increasing as fast as inflation. In Mcdonald s Raising its Minimum Wage, but
Some Say it s Not Enough it is said Mcdonald s projected by the end of 2016, the
average wage rate for employees at its company owned locations would exceed $10
an hour. Even with this slight increase wage theft that is being performed by many
fast food companies makes it difficult to support a
Comparing Herodotus And De Vaca s Writing Styles
A Comparison of Styles
Herodotus versus de Vaca Throughout the course of the world, there have been many
great civilizations that have risen and fallen from power. Many of these civilizations
are remembered not only through the texts or works that they themselves produced,
but through the writings of later historians. Herodotus was an example of a later
historian, because he wrote about a civilization of old, de Vaca was a historian of
the moment because he covered a civilization as he experienced it. The contrast in
the two styles is plainly evident for the most part in the two literary pieces.
Herodotus has a very distinct style compared to de Vaca and as de Vaca s works
came later it can be assumed that he was partially influenced by Herodotus. The
three main areas that Herodotus and de Vaca s works differ are the time period in
which they wrote their pieces, how they regarded their subject matter, and who they
were writing about. As before mentioned, one of the biggest differences between
Herodotus and de Vaca is the time period in which they wrote their pieces. Herodotus

Herodotus was writing his passage mainly on the Egyptian people, but he did have
references to his native people the Greeks. De Vaca mainly covered the Avavares, a
tribe in modern day Texas who existed from 1527 1534 according to most
historians. The Avavares were short lived as they were often conquered by more
powerful tribes in their area, where the Egyptians were the ones who were often
doing the conquering in the Middle East. The two subjects themselves could not be
more different as the Egyptians owned slaves and the Avavares ended up as slaves.
Because of this discrepancy, there can be no mistaking who is who in the two
passages. Herodotus and de Vaca come from similar backgrounds, but the
backgrounds of their two chosen subjects could not be any more
Analysis Of The Yoknapatawpha River In As I Lay Dying
Spring; hurricane. Much as these are both related to water, they differ greatly in their
impact on societies while one brings hope and life to weary travelers, the other brings
struggle accompanied by death. Throughout most of literary history, writers have
explored this idea of poly indicative identity, whether that be with the vast depthness
of water or some other symbol, and William Faulkners novelAs I Lay Dying is no
exception to this idea. From rivers to the fish that inhabit them, As I Lay Dying is
composed with a symphony of different symbols, however, one of the more
persistent ones is that of the river. By incorporating certain aspects of the
Yoknapatawpha River, Faulkner is able to allow the work to flow more smoothly,
more easily incorporate ideas about the themes of death and barriers, as well as
enhance the characterization of certain figures. A symbol is, at its base, a literary
object, an object that besides holding a symbolic meaning also holds a literalone.
Although the symbolic is generally focused upon in class, the literal must not be
forgotten, for it can often be just as important the primary focus for literal objects
is in terms of plot development and flow. In the novel As I Lay Dying, the
Yoknapatawpha River is used to provide a physical barrier for the Bundren family.
As the Bundrens, and some of their neighbors, are traveling to bury Addie, they are
delayed by rainfall that has made the river ... too high to get across (111). By
including this obstacle, Faulkner is able to create a situation in which more
characters are introduced (e.g. Samson, Gillespie, Armstid, etc.) and events are
encouraged if not for the river: Jewel would have never needed to lift the wagon
from the river, the Bundrens would have gotten to Jefferson prior to Darl burning
down Gillespie s barn, and most every event within the 288 page novel would be
irrelevant. It is through plot development that the Yoknapatawpha River functions
literally within As I Lay Dying, however, there are more abstract ways as well.
While it is true that symbols have a literal meaning and function within a work, the
purpose of a symbol is to make connections beyond the scope of the literal, such as
with themes.
Mission To Mars Summary
A big step in search of the life existence in Solar system that is how Dr. Louisa

summary of these results. In Gale Crater, Curiosity found strata (layered rock

Asteroids Essay
Asteroids
In our solar system today there are over 30,000 asteroids flying around in all
direction colliding with other asteroids and planets, without a care about the
destruction they might convey. Our planet Earth is caught right in the middle of all
of this action and is liable to entire extinction of any life forms on the planet if a large
enough asteroid crosses its path. Any single asteroid has the possibility to erase
thousands of years of history and wipeout the human race, as we know it.
Asteroids are large or small chunks of rock and metal flying around space up to
speeds of 80 000 km/h. These chunks were believed to have formed millions of
years ago during the quot;big bang quot;. These rocks didn t form any planets and ...

This procedure is potentially very dangerous because if the asteroid explodes it will
make even more of a mess when hundreds of pieces are then on course towards Earth.
Asteroids are found all over space but are most abundant in the asteroid belt between
Mars and Jupiter; which is believed to have formed when Planet X exploded. This
belt holds about 2000 asteroids, all of different shapes and sizes. The asteroid belt
has its own gravitational pull and all of the asteroids in it revolve around the Sun.
Although the majority of asteroids are found in this belt and are generally stuck in its
gravitational pull, they are sometimes jarred from their positions from the impact of
other asteroids.
Although asteroids could destroy Earth if they come in contact with it, small
meteors that hit Earth are found to be great discoveries. These small space rocks
that have been chipped off of other planets such as Saturn or Mars are a great way
of studying other planets surfaces without having to travel millions of miles for
samples. They come to us. If it wasn t for asteroids hitting the Earth, we might not
be here today. Millions of years ago when the Earth was forming it was a giant ball
made of liquid molten. Over a long period of time asteroids hit the Earth at
tremendous velocities causing them to join the molten and create a crust
Steampunk Novels
Technology and fears of the time are two of the many themes seen in Steampunk
novels. In Victorian novels such as H.G. Wells The Time Machine, technology and
advancement are viewed as the glue that keeps a civilized society together.
However, in more modern works, such as the graphic novel The League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen: Volume 1 by Alen Moore and Kevin O Neil,
technological advancement is feared. Society is now more concerned with human
abuse of technology, specifically technology that causes harm to others. Through
comparison of these works, one can see how the concerns of a society effects the
works of their time, or, perhaps, how the works of their time affect the fears of
society. In H.G Wells, The Time Machine

Wells lived in period after the Industrial Revolution, when England was a super
power and was the most technologically advanced nation. Technology had become a
part of the lives of every man, woman and child in England. They saw how much
their lives had benefited from it. Knowing this, it s understandable that a fear that
these people had would be losing the technology. Another way that Wells
represents this in The Time Machine is when the Time Machine is taken. After the
Time Machine is taken, the Time Traveler finds himself trapped in the future, a
place that is foreign to him. This can be seen as a parallel between the novel and
society at the time. Technology has become a part of their lives, and without it,
their lives would not be the same as before. In many way, they could feel that they
are trapped in degenerate society without it, just as the Time Traveler feels when
he no longer has access to the Time Machine. How society degraded in The Time
Machine can be seen from this quote: I saw an inscription in some unknown
character. I thought, rather foolishly, that Weena might help me to interpret this, but
I only learned that the bare idea of writing had never entered her head. (Wells,
Chapter 8) Since the technology that held words had been lost, and since society s
drive to learn and better itself was all but forgotten, the ability to read was no longer

Fences by August Wilson Essay
In Fences, August Wilson introduces an African American family whose life is based
around a fence. In the dirt yard of the Maxson s house, many relationships come to
blossom and wither here. The main character, Troy Maxson, prevents anyone from
intruding into his life by surrounding himself around a literaland metaphorical fence
that affects his relationships with his wife, son, and mortality.Throughout the play,
readers see an incomplete fence which symbolizes Rose (Troy s wife) and Troy s
drifting relationship. Rose wants Troy and Cory to build a fence to keep her loved
ones protected. This is evident when Rose is seen singing the church hymn, Jesus,

Troy is entirely stubborn in his ways that he cannot see that times has changed.
Since Troy was fenced out from playing professional baseball, he fences Cory out
of playing college football. Troy and Cory s relationship resembles the fence by its
purpose and physical attribution. When it comes to sports, they are separated by
the different generations, but they come together because of their love of sports.
Like a fence that is meant to separate outsiders, but connected to bring together the
fence. Troy and Cory s relationship continues to get pushed apart throughout the
play. In Act 2, Scene 4 Troy and Cory get into a fight which leads Troy to state to
Cory that his things will be on the other side of that fence. When Troy kicks Cory
out onto the streets, the fence becomes an actual division between both of them. The
two spend a lot of time building the fence, only for it to create a literal and emotional
barrier. The fence becomes a representation of the barrier that Troy tries to create
between him and mortality. Troy has a fixation on Death. He talks about how
Death is an easy fastball on the outside corner (I. i). Troy always speaks about how
he could easily knock a baseball out of the park. Comparing Death to a fastball
shows how Troy thinks that he can continue to always keep Death on the other side
of the fence because like a
Negative Impact On Communication
In my life so far, the top three most influential technologies for communication
have been e mail, texting (including group texting), and social media (primarily
Facebook). E mail has shaped my life positively by being able to communicate
professionally. Whether I need to communicate via e mail with bosses, colleagues,
or coworkers; e mail has been an essential tool to be able to do so professionally,
especially when face to face is not an option. A way that e mail has had a negative
impact on my life is if I neglect it. Even when you are on vacation, out with family, or
sick in bed; the e mails keep coming and the pile up can be overwhelming to get
through. This is especially true when you are managing multiple e mail accounts.
Another negative impact is when e mail is the only type of communicationwith
someone. Through my experience, I have found that you can only say so much
through written words, especially through email. The best communication with
people goes through multiple mediums, of talking in person (or on the phone) as well
as through e mail.
Texting has had a big impact on my life. I grew up without a phone, however, in my
last years of high school my parents bought me one. Since then, texting has been a
crucial way of communicating with my friends, family, and peers. Texting, first of all
is very convenient. Most people text back within a couple hours and it allows for
informal conversation. Group texting has played a key part in my life as well. Group
Getting to Yes Analysis Essay
Whether or not we are aware of it, each of us is faced with an abundance of conflict
each and every day. From the division of chores within a household, to asking one s
boss for a raise, we ve all learned the basic skills of negotiation. A national bestseller,
Getting to Yes, introduces the method of principled negotiation, a form of alternative
dispute resolutions as opposed to the common method of positional bargaining.
Within the book, four basic elements of principled negotiation are stressed; separate
the people from the problem, focus on interests instead of positions, invest options
for mutual gain, and insist on using objective criteria. Following this section of the

Again, I found these guidelines to be oversimplified and completely void of the
fact that human s are inapt to simply putting their feelings aside. Also, following
the suggestions such as using symbolic gestures, an example being to В‘[deliver] a
small present for a grandchild seem to me as a pathetic way of sucking up, and
could even result in a power shift, as the other party could see the acts as a way of
asking for pity. Either way, aside from such conflicts where feelings are the cause,
the method of separating the people from the problem is a very intelligent one.
Also, it makes way for a better relationship at the end of the negotiations, as both
parties feel respected by the other. The second part of the method focuses on
interests instead of positions. Interests refer to the result needed, while positions
refer to that wanted. Again, this is a very intellectual concept to ideal conflict and
negotiation. However, in a world where people always want more than enough, and
where positions can be advantageous, this concept is seems to be unnecessary and
even unfavourable. In the case of a В‘victim in conflict, one can usually bargain
more than they В‘need for their damages. In the case of positions and power, an
employee not acknowledging a CEO his/her power would not make a difference in
the status of the two individuals and the potential outcome of the
Functionalist Perspective On Diversity
Diversity is the most important cog in any team because it allows the team to hone
its differences into a sharp blade. Merriam Webster defines diversity as, the
inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a
group or organization (Diversity). Diversity does not solely require the involvement
of one or more race, moreover, it requires the combination of people with different
values. As a child my exposure to diversity was limited to my Puerto Rican culture,
however, my perception of diversity matured as I grew into a man in the workforce.
Maintaining an open mind toward diversity is important for personal growth.

At the age of 17 I was able to join one of the most diverse organizations, the United
States Navy. The Navy embodies the Functionalist Perspective, which refers to
society as a system of parts that work together to achieve a goal (Schaefer, 2015).
The Functionalist Perspective does not establish the value of a person based on
their demographics, but rather it places value on their ability to contribute to the
group. During my ten years of naval service I met people with different culture,
religion and race than my own. I witnessed leadership styles that passionately used
culture and religion as a foundation when making moral decisions. For example, my
Staff Sergeant helped me pray after my first combat casualty. He was able to
provide empathy by appealing to my cultural beliefs, which may have not occurred
in an organization that did not promote diversity. At the team level it was refreshing
to have diversity because it effortlessly introduced new thoughts and ideas. For
instance, my unit was tasked with building field latrines and we had a member of
our team from Alaska who had experience in making outhouses. Unfortunately, I also
witnessed prejudice on deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Prejudice is defined as,
A negative attitude toward an entire group of people (Schaefer, 2015). On
deployment, we had members of our team that did not view the local citizens as,
people. Furthermore, they did not value the lives of the local citizens to the same
standard as an American. Ultimately, my workforce experience trained me to be
empathic toward other cultures and religions.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Functionalist Perspective is a great overview of how society
should interact. It is my personal philosophy that diversity provides essential
enrichment to an individual s humanity. My experience with diversity has promoted
both growth professionally and

ideology Victorians held that women must be exclusively spiritual beings, but by

the students at Lowood, and the physical needs of the impoverished in the

teachers are surprised at this order, but Miss Temple reassures them saying that she
will be the one to answer for it (27). When Mr. Brocklehurst does visit, he discusses
with her each incident against his policies against replacing or providing extra
necessities for the students, and Miss Temple offers explanations to him for each
occurrence. She takes full responsibility for each decision as well, and does not
fault any of the other teachers or students as she does so. Though Miss Temple is
defiant in her manner of speech against Mr. Brocklehurst s regulations, she replies
meekly to him as the number of occurrences he questions her about grows (38). She
attempts to be an advocate for the needs of her students, but Mr. Brocklehurst is her
superior and the provider of the funds used in the school s day to day operations, so

The Importance Of Proper Physical Conditioning In
Volleyball
One issue in this case, is that the volleyball players are behind on conditioning with
the team. This is because their season is still occurring while the softball team has
started the preseason. This relates to the Duty to Provide and Supervise Proper
Physical Conditioning. This is the duty to provide physical conditioning must take
into consideration the development of the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular
systems of the athletes and the type of conditioning needed for a particular sport. As
mentioned these three athletes were coming from volleyball season, which requires
many different skills and conditioning than softball. Given this reason, this is why
Heather should conditioned more if she wants more playing time in the field. Coach
Jessica, is smart by using Heather s strength of pinch hitting and encouragement
throughout the team. This is beneficial to Heather because Jessica is not putting a
player out in the field that is not conditioned or physical ready to playthe field. If she
were to put heather in the field it would increase the risk of Heather being in a
position of harm.
The second issue, is when Heather s mom goes to the school board to try to get her
fired because Heather is not receiving field time that her mom feels is sufficient.
Heather s mom does not have a sufficient reason to complain about heather not
receiving field time. One of the reasons heather mom wants the petition to be signed
is because Heather is not getting enough playing time and

The Qualification of Daphne Du Maurier s Rebecca as a Gothic Novel One of
mankind s most valuable gifts is the ability to feel emotions and be able to react to
them in a variety of ways. One of these emotions can be recognized as horror.
Horror can be directly related as an immense sensation of fear, anxiety, and despair.
Horror is adored by some and abhorred by others. Most importantly, there exist many
sources for frightening media and information. One genre of literature that tends to
provide horror can be known as Gothic Literature. Within this genre, many books
serve as accurate representations. Rebecca by Daphne Du Mauriermost definitely
qualifies as a Gothic novel due to its precise portrayal of multiple elements of Gothic
Literature such as eerie settings, presence of distressed characters, and unfortunate
events combined with bad weather. Before examining Rebecca s validity as an
accurate representation of Gothic literature, it is imperative for one to understand the
definition and origin of this genre. Gothic literature is a style of writing which
involves, ... mystery and supernatural horror, often set in a dark castle or other
medieval setting (Dictionary). One of the most interesting facts of Gothic literature is
that its origins are diverse considering that it developed as a sub branch of
Romanticism. This genre developed from numerous prior plays and writings which
discussed superstition, the evident supernatural, and various demons. An
Who Is Greit s Father Figure
When an object we desire becomes unavailable to us, we often search for a
replacement. It economics this is called a substitute good, in a relationship this is
called a rebound, and in Freudian terms, this is called displacement. In the movie,
girl with a pearl earring, Greit creates a chain of displacement, when she displaces
her fathers love onto Vermeer and then her attraction to Vermeer onto Pieter. The
initiating event in TGWTPE is the moment Greit s father goes blind due to a work

Being of age often means that a girl is experiencing changes both physically and
mentally. Physically speaking she is growing more and filling out her shape as a

Vermeer and Greit often engaged with eachother in sexually tense moments. The
most notable moments are when Vermeer and Greit just stare at eachother deeply,
not moving, challenging the other to make a move. There are many occasions
where they stare at each other intensely. When Greit is making paints for Vermeer
and he grabs her hands under his, moving them together, she stares directly at him,
unwavering. The physical contact, on top of the very suggestive movement of the
hands topped with the deep stares resonates sexual tension. When Greit is taking
off her hair wrap, letting her hair fall, to find Vermeer staring her down only to
stare at her back is an even stronger example. He s seen her hair in this scene, a
symbol of her sexuality, of her femininity, yet when she notices him staring she
doesn t rush to hide it, she stands there and stares back as if to ask, what now. They
both acknowledge and are aware of the tension. Biologically there is nothing holding
them back from each other however; the biggest hurdle of their relationship is social
status. Vermeer is not only a married man, but on a different social level than Greit.

When people sin, they turn away and disobey God. They are choosing their own
way instead of remaining faithful to God. When a person sins, it creates a separation
between the community, God and the person. Whenever someone sins it hurts and

Over all, the Church has developed formal rituals that address the needs of people to
be reconciled with God and the church.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation calls for repentance and conversion of heart. This
means, turning away from sin and bad choices and turn towards God and others.
Through this sacrament, members of the Catholic Church can continue to experience
God s mercy and forgiveness and are reconciled with God, themselves and the
church community. Catholics believe that through Reconciliation they receive the
grace and power from God to turn away from evil and turn to a new way of being.
Reconciliation celebrates the conversion to a new way of living. The new
relationship between self, God and community. All of us will at some point in our
life need reconciliation with people and sometimes even with ourselves. For
Christians, it is also important to reconcile with God. We all experience times when
we need forgiveness for how we have behaved but it must begin with a change of
heart.
Before you go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation it is important to understand what
will happen. Going to confession is a concrete sign that we are sorry for our sin
and shows that we are ready to do something about changing our behaviour. When
going to Confession, there is two main people involved: the penitent, who is seeking
forgiveness and the priest, who is absolving you of your sins. The priest does not
forgive sins

Hardware
To improve and better system performance, high quality hardware is extremely
important. In a database system, hardware includes many parts, such as CPU
processing power, available primary memory (RAM), hard disk, and network
about high speed connection (Coronel and Morris, 2015). For CPU basic
requirement, normally it should have dual core CPU or higher to increase the
database performance as fast as possible. The larger RAM is, the computer will run
faster. Hard disk is essential to the fast speed for a database environment. Finally,
without a high speed network connection, high database performance cannot be
guaranteed. Today, switches are much faster than hubs. Using switches instead of
hubs can improve the network effectivity and efficiency. A reliable and high speed
network can improve the database performance and reduce response time. However,
in a real world, unlimited hardware support is impossible. Company normally
purchase the maximized possible based on the budget cost.
Software
The other important element is software for a database performance. Software
includes operating system, network for best throughput and application software

system selection. It normally can perform a better system performance than 32 bit

against Xavier, but he doesn t defend himself with words but with actions on the
battlefield. Xavier had two challenges in the battlefield, one was how to survive
death and the other was fighting discrimination and uncomfort. The military s
official language was English, Xavier s struggle with himself is clearly stated here
as his first language is not English. Whiskeyjack is how they say his name, make it
their own...what sounds to my ears like a longer word for bastard, making his
name a name without a family, explains Xavier Page 154. All of the Canadians are
fighting with each other against a common enemy. The way Xavier deals with
culture division, identifying it and holding on to his culture, and how Elijah
handles it, by settling in the white culture. This shows how Xavier interprets
culture clash. Xavier thinks when Elijah accepts the white pronunciation he is
losing his identity through the culture clash in Xavier s eyes. Xavier cooperates
more with his culture which is why he sees the mispronunciation as a way of
running away of his real identity, and Elijah does not see it the same way. Xavier is
always seeking help from Elijah because Elijah was raised in an English speaking
school which was also an advantage Elijah had over Xavier but unfortunately jealousy
grew between them and
Bias in the Media Essay
Everyday millions of Americans plop down in front of their TVs to get their daily
intake of news and current events of what happened that day. Sadly, most of the news
and facts they are getting have been altered somehow by someone at the news
corporation or by the reporters themselves. In the numerous newssources that cover
world evens daily there are certain viewpoints that are thrust into the public s face.
This highly opinionated and biased news coverage has been present since there was
news to report on. From WWII and onwards there has been a steady increase in the
number of news corporations, which in turn has caused an increase in viewpoints on
news coverage. Americans get this biased view of current world events because

Bias in reporter s stories can be created a couple different ways. One of those
possibilities is that information is fabricated to reflect a news corporation s viewpoint
as well as the bias they normally present. The second is the fact that a journalist
can include in their story quotations from advocated of particular perspective
(David Baron 4). By quoting these people in their stories journalist and reporters
all the advocates to present their perspectives, make assertions and allegations,
draw conclusions, and argue for particular actions (Baron 4). The public is also
able to diagnose the root causes of media bias in two forms. The first is, bias is a
lack of dispassion and impartiality that colors the decision of whether or not to
publish a story (Baron 6). Secondly, they see bias as an intent to persuade (Baron 6).
Media bias could have a variety of sources. Bias could reflect the preferences or
worldview of the owner and reporters of any news corporation. In the US, major
news organizations are owned by corporations and in some cases are run by the
government. The American Society of News Editors (ASNE) took a poll of the
American public and discovered their opinions on biases 30 percent of adults see
bias as not being open minded and neutral about the facts. 29 percent say that it s
having an agenda, and shaping the news report to
Gettysburg Address Failure
Today, the Gettysburg Address is praised for being one of the most renowned
speeches in U.S. history, but despite its fame, it was not always viewed as being a
complete success. It is important to realize that the views from the 1860 s were
very contrasting to those of today, including how people viewed Lincoln and his
speech. One newspaper article from the time period puts this into perspective. The
Harrisburg Patriot Union Newspaper company wrote an article Tuesday, November
24th of 1863 recognizing the silly remarks of the President (Pengelly). It also goes
on to note that, ... for the credit of the nation we are willing that the veil of oblivion
shall be dropped over them and that they shall be no more repeated or thought of
(Pengelly). In general, the article basically mocks the president, specifically noting
how short and pathetic his speech was. Furthermore, many others at the time had felt
the same way about the speech, suggesting that Lincoln s Gettysburg Addresswas
nothing but a failure.
However, this viewpoint evolves over time. A prime example of... Show more

Lincoln s stance on equality is best explained by Gary Wills, who summarizes
Lincoln s view by saying, If all men are created equal, they cannot be property. They
cannot be ruled by owner monarchs. They must be self governing in the minimal
sense of self possession (Wills 120). Lincoln not only wanted citizenship for the
slaves, but also equality in across the board. Whereas for the South, the equality of all
men would bring their biggest nightmare to life; African Americans being considered
equal to themselves. Furthermore, they didn t want to see those who they viewed as
lower than themselves to rise above them, and granting the freedmen citizenship
would only progress from
Tap Dancer Research Paper
I am a tap dancer. I have been trained in all other forms of dance, of course, but I
have always considered myself a tap dancer above all else. To most people, this
talent seems to be a pretty straightforward thing, however there is much more to it
than meets the eye. I feel that my application would be incomplete without this
information because my journey of becoming a tap dancer has shaped me in many
ways. As I became more serious about tap, I entered into a diverse community that is
rich with talent, history, and knowledge. I have found myself in classes taking from
tap legends such as Jason Samuels Smith, Professor Robert L. Reed, and Avi Miller
and Ofer Ben (names which are all but unknown to non dancers). These men, along
with many
Bjergo And Barash Causal Model
This difficult life condition helps support Bjergo Barash Causal Model since it is a
structural cause. Another huge issue was the change in government. Nicaragua was
controlled by a dictator named Anastasio Somoza Garcia took control after he was
elected due to the 44 year old form of government in 1937. He was then succeeded by
his son in 1956 after his father was assassinated Luis Somoza Debayle. Everyone in
Nicaraguawas then accustomed to dictators, in which Luis Somoza oppressed people
and committed injustices using his national guard. The National Guard was used to
oppress people who tried to overthrow him. Afterwards, the Contras did not like the
Sandanistas economic policies so they formed their own military groups called the

Atomic Bombs On Japan
On the 6th of August 1945, the American bomber, Enola Gay, dropped an atomic
bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Immediately, 80 000 people were killed.
Tens of thousands more died in the following weeks from wounds and radiation
poisoning. On the 9th of August, another bomb was dropped on the city of
Nagasaki, killing between 40 000 and 50 000 more people. The question is, was it
necessary for the Unites States to drop the atomic bombs on Japan? In my opinion,
the United States was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. During the
course of the Second World War, the United States suffered the loss of more than
418 000 lives, both military officials and civilians. This was one of the reasons why
the United States wanted the
Americans Are Now Living In a Society That Rivals Orwell
s...
Today it is possible for the government to monitor anything and everything we do
or say, and even to track the places we go. In George Orwell s 1984, Winston Smith
lives in the dystopian society called Oceana. This book was written by George
Orwell, and thus gave way to the term an Orwellian society (a society that can be
compared to the societies of both 1984 and Animal Farm ). This society is usually
the result of an attempt to become a utopia which ultimately has gone terribly wrong.
With the advancement of modern technology, America is being turned into an
Orwellian society. While the technology we have is more advanced than what was
seen in 1984, it can be reasoned that the services and devices, not present in 1984,
would be heavily... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has been discovered that the major cellular provider Verizon, has made a contract
with the NSA stating that at the end of each day the company Verizon must give
all cellular records collected that day to the NSA. This transaction however is not
expressed to the customers of Verizon. This is a breach in trust between the
customers of Version and the company itself. The NSA program, uncovered by the
former CIA agent and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, is called Prism.
Snowden, while working for the NSA disclosed this information by leaking this
classified information to a web site called The Guardian. The fact that the
information was classified means that the NSA had no intention of telling the
citizens of the USA about its ability to monitor and record this great amount of data.
This program while legally not able to record the conversation in the of a phone call
can detect and record the number who is making the call, the number being called,
the duration of the call, and, if necessary, the cellular tower used to send the call.
This is intruding upon a huge portion of what most people consider personal, private
data. (The Guardian) One of the bestselling portable device brands is Apple. Every
Apple product made after the year 2000, other than the iPod Shuffle, has the ability to
connect to the internet. With the ability to connect to the internet comes the liability
of being monitored by the

  • 2. Lover Journal 1 What impact has the Canadian Social and Political history on writing of Joy Mannette and Denise Chong? Both authors Joy Mannette and Denise Chong have written different articles about racism and discrimination .First article My Dearest Child is written by Joy Mannette and the other one The Concubine s Children is written by Denise Chong. Both of these articles reflected how the black and Chinese immigrants suffered in Canada in 17th and 19th century. But now as we all know Canada is a multicultural country. From the writing of Denise Chong, from The concubine s children , we can clearly observe that Chinese were unwelcome in Canada to a degree where special taxes levied on the Chinese for school and policing, employment, laundry, shoes, even cigars and even bared from becoming naturalized citizens, from owning land, from working on public works (56). Such opposition did not prevent the government to bring one exception to the rule, claiming that the Chinese would work for much less, were more reliable than the available white labour and many Chinese were assigned the most dangerous job (57). Moreover, newspapers and politicians alike pandered to public

Level of distraction and information retention Figure 1: Undergraduate s response to distraction Figure 2: Undergraduate s response to the level of retention It was surprising and unexpected to see that although the students may be distracted by their own music, their level of retention is reasonably high, with the majority of the students remembering between 60 to 80 percent of the information that they have processed. Factors that may have influenced this outcome could be alluded to the fact that once the students have created a calm and accustomed studying atmosphere, that they can properly engage in it and retain such a high level of information. • 5. The Epilogue Analysis The most pressing issue involving communication, gender, and culture would be acceptance. Individuals need to take into consideration that even though they want many aspects to remain the same, things are bound to change. After reading the Epilogue and the textbook, I realize that we need to be willing to accept what families decide is the best choice for the work load among both parents. Growing up with both my parents working outside the house helped me appreciate both members and what they were able to contribute to the family. This also helps me realize that even though one family member may decide to stay home, that does not make them any less important to the family overall. A statement that Julia Wood made in the Epilogue stood out to me. She says that As women and men, you can affect what society expects of and admires in each sex (Wood, 321). There are many things in society that people find offensive. As the next decade comes into view, there needs to be emphasis placed on grasping the differences in each individual person which would help us realize that not everyone reacts to things the same. She says Maybe your generation will replace the melting pot metaphor with one that recognizes commonality without obliterating real and valuable differences among people (Wood, 322). I think that she makes a great point here. We have been raised to understand that there is a melting pot in our society. This idea may need to change in order to better suite what each person needs. It is important to recognize that we are not robots in society today. Each and every one of us wants to feel accepted for who we are as unique

  • 7. The Importance Of Moral Isolationism According to Mary Midgley, moral isolationism consists in simply denying that we can never understand any culture except our own well enough to make judgements about it (Midgley, 322). Midgley argues that moral isolationism is incorrect and it is illogical. She argues this by saying that it is possible for outsiders to judge foreign cultures, but moral isolationism is illogical because it excludes any kind of judgment. She also exposes that judgment is tied to respect and moral isolationism excludes barriers such as intermixing cultures. I believe that judgment of other cultures is crucial to the existence of moral values. Without judgment, individuals would not have their own opinions because judgment goes hand in hand with opinion. However, when one is judging another culture, they should be aware that their judgment should be respectful and take moral relativism into retrospect. We have to be ethical and fully understand that cultures vary when criticizing another culture. If we do not understand Ruth Benedict s belief of moral relativism, then we are not lawful to judge another culture. In her essay, Midgley notes that moral isolationism is incoherent because judgment is an opinion, and is directly related to respect. It may appeal to some that moral isolationism is respectful, but it is not because it entirely arrogant. Nobody can respect what is entirely unintelligible to them...to respect someone, we have to know enough about him to make a favorable judgement, however general and tentative. And we do not understand people in other cultures to this extent. Otherwise a great mass of our most valuable thinking would be paralyzed (Midgley, 322). In order to respect a culture, judgment has to be involved. Due to this discrepancy, moral isolationism cannot make sense. For a rightful judgment, one should first understand the foreign culture that they are examining. Once an individual is fully knowledgeable of another culture s ways, it is possible to make a rightful judgment. Whether the judgment is a good one, or a bad one, it is still necessary for one to gain full knowledge. In relation to judgment, I do believe that cultures should judge each other. I think judgment plays an important role when

The four mains types of communication are written, verbal, non verbal and visual. Humans communicate to establish relationship, build foundation for planning, socializing in general and motivating each other. Communicationcan vary in different settings. Stakeholders in Nursing Programs Evaluation Process Part 1 Stakeholders on Nursing Programs Evaluation Process First, we must ask who the stakeholders are when it comes to any nursing program. This is a wide universe, for the stakeholders are many. First, of course, we have instructors at the university level, most of whom have been or are practicing professionals. Then there are the administrators of the program who must continually search out money and grants to keep the program going. We then move into the public sector: patients, families, physicians, support staff at healthcare facilities, healthcare administration, HMOs, private insurers, and governmental agencies (Colvin, et.al., 2008). Each has a role to play within the evaluation process. If we divide these groups, we find some commonalities: The administrators Each person in charge of any program that has anything to do with nursing has an effect on the evaluation process. They must be confident that the quality and consistency of nursing is being met when they graduate students (accreditation) or hire. They must know that the programs are meeting state and Federal requirements and must continually lobby for funding to keep the flow of professional nurses coming as needed. Comparing Herodotus And De Vaca s Writing Styles A Comparison of Styles Herodotus versus de Vaca Throughout the course of the world, there have been many great civilizations that have risen and fallen from power. Many of these civilizations are remembered not only through the texts or works that they themselves produced, but through the writings of later historians. Herodotus was an example of a later historian, because he wrote about a civilization of old, de Vaca was a historian of the moment because he covered a civilization as he experienced it. De Vaca mainly covered the Avavares, a tribe in modern day Texas who existed from 1527 1534 according to most historians. The Avavares were short lived as they were often conquered by more powerful tribes in their area, where the Egyptians were the ones who were often doing the conquering in the Middle East. The two subjects themselves could not be more different as the Egyptians owned slaves and the Avavares ended up as slaves. Because of this discrepancy, there can be no mistaking who is who in the two passages. • 23. Analysis Of The Yoknapatawpha River In As I Lay Dying Spring; hurricane. Much as these are both related to water, they differ greatly in their impact on societies while one brings hope and life to weary travelers, the other brings struggle accompanied by death. Throughout most of literary history, writers have explored this idea of poly indicative identity, whether that be with the vast depthness of water or some other symbol, and William Faulkners novelAs I Lay Dying is no exception to this idea. From rivers to the fish that inhabit them, As I Lay Dying is composed with a symphony of different symbols, however, one of the more persistent ones is that of the river. By incorporating certain aspects of the Yoknapatawpha River, Faulkner is able to allow the work to flow more smoothly, more easily incorporate ideas about the themes of death and barriers, as well as enhance the characterization of certain figures. A symbol is, at its base, a literary object, an object that besides holding a symbolic meaning also holds a literalone. Although the symbolic is generally focused upon in class, the literal must not be forgotten, for it can often be just as important the primary focus for literal objects is in terms of plot development and flow. In the novel As I Lay Dying, the Yoknapatawpha River is used to provide a physical barrier for the Bundren family. As the Bundrens, and some of their neighbors, are traveling to bury Addie, they are delayed by rainfall that has made the river ... too high to get across (111). By including this obstacle, Faulkner is able to create a situation in which more characters are introduced (e.g. Samson, Gillespie, Armstid, etc.) and events are encouraged if not for the river: Jewel would have never needed to lift the wagon from the river, the Bundrens would have gotten to Jefferson prior to Darl burning down Gillespie s barn, and most every event within the 288 page novel would be irrelevant. It is through plot development that the Yoknapatawpha River functions literally within As I Lay Dying, however, there are more abstract ways as well. While it is true that symbols have a literal meaning and function within a work, the purpose of a symbol is to make connections beyond the scope of the literal, such as with themes.

This belt holds about 2000 asteroids, all of different shapes and sizes. The asteroid belt has its own gravitational pull and all of the asteroids in it revolve around the Sun. Although the majority of asteroids are found in this belt and are generally stuck in its gravitational pull, they are sometimes jarred from their positions from the impact of other asteroids. Although asteroids could destroy Earth if they come in contact with it, small meteors that hit Earth are found to be great discoveries. Wells The Time Machine, technology and advancement are viewed as the glue that keeps a civilized society together. However, in more modern works, such as the graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Volume 1 by Alen Moore and Kevin O Neil, technological advancement is feared. Society is now more concerned with human abuse of technology, specifically technology that causes harm to others. Through comparison of these works, one can see how the concerns of a society effects the works of their time, or, perhaps, how the works of their time affect the fears of society. Wells lived in period after the Industrial Revolution, when England was a super power and was the most technologically advanced nation. Technology had become a part of the lives of every man, woman and child in England. They saw how much their lives had benefited from it. Knowing this, it s understandable that a fear that these people had would be losing the technology. Another way that Wells represents this in The Time Machine is when the Time Machine is taken. After the Time Machine is taken, the Time Traveler finds himself trapped in the future, a place that is foreign to him. This can be seen as a parallel between the novel and society at the time. Technology has become a part of their lives, and without it, their lives would not be the same as before. In many way, they could feel that they are trapped in degenerate society without it, just as the Time Traveler feels when he no longer has access to the Time Machine. How society degraded in The Time Machine can be seen from this quote: I saw an inscription in some unknown character. I thought, rather foolishly, that Weena might help me to interpret this, but I only learned that the bare idea of writing had never entered her head. (Wells, Chapter 8) Since the technology that held words had been lost, and since society s drive to learn and better itself was all but forgotten, the ability to read was no longer valued. When Troy kicks Cory out onto the streets, the fence becomes an actual division between both of them. The two spend a lot of time building the fence, only for it to create a literal and emotional barrier. The fence becomes a representation of the barrier that Troy tries to create between him and mortality. Troy has a fixation on Death. He talks about how Death is an easy fastball on the outside corner (I. i). Troy always speaks about how he could easily knock a baseball out of the park. Whether I need to communicate via e mail with bosses, colleagues, or coworkers; e mail has been an essential tool to be able to do so professionally, especially when face to face is not an option. A way that e mail has had a negative impact on my life is if I neglect it. Even when you are on vacation, out with family, or sick in bed; the e mails keep coming and the pile up can be overwhelming to get through. This is especially true when you are managing multiple e mail accounts. Another negative impact is when e mail is the only type of communicationwith someone. Through my experience, I have found that you can only say so much through written words, especially through email. The best communication with people goes through multiple mediums, of talking in person (or on the phone) as well as through e mail. Texting has had a big impact on my life. I grew up without a phone, however, in my last years of high school my parents bought me one. Since then, texting has been a crucial way of communicating with my friends, family, and peers. Texting, first of all is very convenient. Most people text back within a couple hours and it allows for informal conversation. Group texting has played a key part in my life as well. Group

Either way, aside from such conflicts where feelings are the cause, the method of separating the people from the problem is a very intelligent one. Also, it makes way for a better relationship at the end of the negotiations, as both parties feel respected by the other. The second part of the method focuses on interests instead of positions. Interests refer to the result needed, while positions refer to that wanted. Again, this is a very intellectual concept to ideal conflict and negotiation. However, in a world where people always want more than enough, and where positions can be advantageous, this concept is seems to be unnecessary and even unfavourable. The Navy embodies the Functionalist Perspective, which refers to society as a system of parts that work together to achieve a goal (Schaefer, 2015). The Functionalist Perspective does not establish the value of a person based on their demographics, but rather it places value on their ability to contribute to the group. During my ten years of naval service I met people with different culture, religion and race than my own. I witnessed leadership styles that passionately used culture and religion as a foundation when making moral decisions. For example, my Staff Sergeant helped me pray after my first combat casualty. He was able to provide empathy by appealing to my cultural beliefs, which may have not occurred in an organization that did not promote diversity. At the team level it was refreshing to have diversity because it effortlessly introduced new thoughts and ideas. For instance, my unit was tasked with building field latrines and we had a member of our team from Alaska who had experience in making outhouses. Unfortunately, I also witnessed prejudice on deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Prejudice is defined as, A negative attitude toward an entire group of people (Schaefer, 2015). On deployment, we had members of our team that did not view the local citizens as, people. Furthermore, they did not value the lives of the local citizens to the same standard as an American. Ultimately, my workforce experience trained me to be empathic toward other cultures and religions. Conclusion In conclusion, the Functionalist Perspective is a great overview of how society should interact. It is my personal philosophy that diversity provides essential enrichment to an individual s humanity. My experience with diversity has promoted both growth professionally and

I feel that my application would be incomplete without this information because my journey of becoming a tap dancer has shaped me in many ways. As I became more serious about tap, I entered into a diverse community that is rich with talent, history, and knowledge. I have found myself in classes taking from tap legends such as Jason Samuels Smith, Professor Robert L. Reed, and Avi Miller and Ofer Ben (names which are all but unknown to non dancers). These men, along with many

  • 44. Atomic Bombs On Japan On the 6th of August 1945, the American bomber, Enola Gay, dropped an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Immediately, 80 000 people were killed. Tens of thousands more died in the following weeks from wounds and radiation poisoning. On the 9th of August, another bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki, killing between 40 000 and 50 000 more people. The question is, was it necessary for the Unites States to drop the atomic bombs on Japan? In my opinion, the United States was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. During the course of the Second World War, the United States suffered the loss of more than 418 000 lives, both military officials and civilians. This was one of the reasons why the United States wanted the
  • 45. Americans Are Now Living In a Society That Rivals Orwell s... Today it is possible for the government to monitor anything and everything we do or say, and even to track the places we go. In George Orwell s 1984, Winston Smith lives in the dystopian society called Oceana. This book was written by George Orwell, and thus gave way to the term an Orwellian society (a society that can be compared to the societies of both 1984 and Animal Farm ). This society is usually the result of an attempt to become a utopia which ultimately has gone terribly wrong. With the advancement of modern technology, America is being turned into an Orwellian society. While the technology we have is more advanced than what was seen in 1984, it can be reasoned that the services and devices, not present in 1984, would be heavily... This transaction however is not expressed to the customers of Verizon. This is a breach in trust between the customers of Version and the company itself. The NSA program, uncovered by the former CIA agent and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, is called Prism. Snowden, while working for the NSA disclosed this information by leaking this classified information to a web site called The Guardian. The fact that the information was classified means that the NSA had no intention of telling the citizens of the USA about its ability to monitor and record this great amount of data. This program while legally not able to record the conversation in the of a phone call can detect and record the number who is making the call, the number being called, the duration of the call, and, if necessary, the cellular tower used to send the call. This is intruding upon a huge portion of what most people consider personal, private data. (The Guardian) One of the bestselling portable device brands is Apple. Every Apple product made after the year 2000, other than the iPod Shuffle, has the ability to connect to the internet. With the ability to connect to the internet comes the liability of being monitored by the
