Sitting Bull was a famous Native American leader born in 1834 in South Dakota who led the Sioux tribe. He gained his name "Sitting Bull" after showing bravery in battle against the Crow Indians. Sitting Bull helped lead Native American forces to victory over Lieutenant Colonel George Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. After the battle, Sitting Bull and his tribe fled to Canada but later returned to the U.S. in 1881. He was killed in 1890 while being arrested by Indian police officers amid concerns over his involvement in the Ghost Dance movement.
