The Patriots fortified Breed's Hill overnight by digging trenches. With little gunpowder and training, they had to make every shot count against the British forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill the next day. Although the British were victorious on their third assault by overrunning the revolutionary defenses, they suffered over 1,000 casualties. The battle demonstrated the Americans' willingness to engage the British in direct combat.
