George Washington proclaims the first national Thanksgiving on November 26, 1777 to give thanks for God's protection of the American people and for His providence in helping achieve victory in the Revolutionary War up to that point. The Continental Army endured great hardship while wintering at Valley Forge in 1777-1778, with 2500 soldiers dying from starvation, disease, exposure and lack of supplies. Despite these difficulties, Washington maintained faith and prayer, strengthening the resolve of the patriot cause.
