The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on June 17, 1775 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The British forces of 2,400 soldiers led by Generals Howe and Gage attacked 1,500 American colonial troops led by Generals Ward, Putnam, and Warren, who were stationed on Breed's Hill. After two failed attacks that resulted in heavy British casualties, the British launched a third strike once they realized the colonial forces were out of ammunition, forcing the colonists to finally retreat. Though the British gained control of the area, it came at a high cost of 1,150 British soldiers killed or wounded compared to 450 colonial casualties.
