RESTful OSGi Web Applications Tutorial - Khawaja S Shams & Jeff Norrismfrancis
OSGi DevCon 2008
NASA has been using the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) as the foundation for many of its rover operations tools for several years. Recently, we started using the Equinox project to extend our applications to the server as well. Along the way, we discovered REST, an intuitive, lightweight methodology for building web applications. In this tutorial, we will share the techniques that we have learned to combine these technologies into web services that are easy to develop, deploy, and use.
This tutorial will be focused on an entertaining set of space-related hands-on exercises that will teach participants to develop, integrate and deploy RESTful web applications on top of OSGI. Participants will walk away with an example RCP application and its Equinox server side support, along with an understanding of how each component functions. The presentation will also discuss issues associated with maintaining the server side code, securing the web applications, and performance. We will be deploying web based services through extension points, so the users will also be able to extend the example project to integrate additional web-services or use the skeleton for their own server side application. We will finally deploy the application to a tomcat server for production usage.
This tutorial will provide a hands-on demonstration of how Equinox and the Restlet framework make a unique combination that takes advantage of the powerful features offered by OSGI and the simplicity offered by REST. Web based services can offer a new whole new set of features to complement an RCP application, and we will demonstrate how simple this can be with a solid and battle tested framework behind the web applications.
Audience
We recommend that audience members have basic familiarity with plugin development and come prepared to code. Audience members without development experience will gain background information on evaluating Equinox for the architecture of their web based applications.
Modular Test-driven SPAs with Spring and AngularJSGunnar Hillert
Single-page Applications (SPA) are all the rage these days and with them there is an avalanche of new tools, libraries and frameworks we need to know. But what does this mean for us as Spring developers? In this session we will give you an overview of the current landscape and illustrate the choices the Spring XD team has made for its user interface. What do I use to write SPA applications? How do I integrate them into existing Spring-based backends? How do I build them? Can I integrate them into my existing Gradle or Maven build processes in order to achieve complete build automation? How do I integrate realtime messaging using Spring's SockJS/WebSocket support? In this talk we will answer these and many more questions. We will cover frameworks such as AngularJS, Bootstrap, RequireJS; tools like Bower, Grunt, Gulp; and also talk about testing using Karma and Protractor.

Although tools like Varnish can improve performance and scalability for static sites, when user-specific content is needed, a hit to the PHP/Ruby/Python/.Net backend is still required, causing scalability issues. We’ll look at a brand-new Nginx module which implements an ultra-fast and scalable solution to this problem, changing the way developers think about designing sites with user-specific content.

Web App Security for Java Developers - UberConf 2021Matt Raible
Web app security is not just authentication and authorization. It's also the things you do to protect your web app from attackers with their XSS (cross-site scripting), SQL injection, DoS/DDoS attacks, and CSRF (cross-site request forgery), to name a few.
Web app security is a central component of any web-based business. The internet exposes web apps to attacks from different locations and various levels of scale and complexity. Web application security deals specifically with the security surrounding websites, web applications, and web services such as APIs.
In this presentation, you'll learn seven ways to better web app security, using Spring Security for code samples. You'll also see some quick demos of Spring Boot, Angular, and JHipster with Okta.
Universal JS Web Applications with React - Luciano Mammino - Codemotion Rome ...Luciano Mammino
Since we started to see JS on the server side, the dream of developers has been to reduce the gap and the cost of switch between frontend/backend technologies. Today with Node.js, React and a whole ecosystem of tools, this dream is becoming real! In this talk, I am going to discuss Universal (a.k.a. Isomorphic) JavaScript and present some practical example regarding the significant patterns related to routing, data retrieval and rendering. I will use Node, React, Webpack, Babel and React Router and give you a series of example to get you started easily with this new technology trend.

If you have a new web project or and existing Drupal site, the combination of Drupal and Apache Solr is both powerful and easy to set up thanks to the existing integration code. The module allows for substantial customization with the administrative UI. Drupal facilitates further customizations of the UI, indexing, and bosting because of the open architecture that provides multiple opportunities for custom code to alter the behavior. A couple code snippets will be followed by a review of other contributed Drupal modules that further enhance the search capability.
Finally, this session will showcase some example of Drupal sites using Solr including Acquia's own sites and Drupal sites including many well-known Enterprise and government sites.

Presenters:
Nick Veenhof & Joris Vercammen
Description:
In this session I'll give you an overview what changed so far in Drupal 8 in regards to the Search eco-system. We will talk about Search API, Apache Solr, Facet API and Elastic Search.
Over the course of the last 3 years I've been involved in how Search in Drupal 8 should take form and what needed to change to merge the Apache Solr module with the Search API Solr module. In this presentation I hope to give you some guidance what is still pending and what already was done. I will also try to explain what effort it takes to push and move such projects.
Depending on the audience we can go really in-depth or stay general. Please let me know in advance what you expect from this session so I can tailor it to your needs!
It's no denying that rich Javascript applications (sometimes called single-page applications) are a big thing, but what if you want to leverage Drupal on the backend or have an existing site? Tools like Angular.JS and Backbone are great when you have an API, and with Drupal 8, APIs will be first-class citizens. I'll explore the parts of a single-page application and how to integrate it into either an existing or a new Drupal site, as well as the pitfalls that one must watch out for.

Next.js is one of the top choices when you need performant and robust React.js server side rendering with smart code splitting on your front end. Things like smart code-splitting, routing, lazy loading, isomorphic state between server and client side (browser) or Webpack optimised configurations can be a hassle, but Next.js framework make your developing process go forward.
After almost two years building from an e-commerce to a publishing site using Next.js with Drupal + GraphQL on production, we learned valuable lessons which motivated us to build the next-on-drupal boilerplate, a collection of examples and tools in order to integrate Drupal best features with Next.js.
I'll share with you our most valuable lessons, showing to you how we integrate: Drupal’s dynamic routing, translations, layouts with contextual blocks, metatags, cache-tags and more.
In the recent years there have been many changes in the way users interact with web applications. Traditional web applications evolve and we have to be there to adapt these changes. In this talk I will present single-page applications (SPAs) and will show how they affect everyone – from project managers, designers, and developers to end-users. We will see why SPAs attract attention and what has lead to this new web trend. Furthermore, we will go through the ups and downs of single-page applications and will try to get an answer to the question: Is this something for me and my customers?
Npm, bower, Angular, jQuery, grunt, gulp, browserify, requirejs, ember, backbone, requirejs, amd .... thousands of micro frameworks, libraries and tools.
The question is how do you avoid getting lost within the jungle of modern JS frameworks, libraries and tools? How to be effective and actually deliver while every day there is a new cool framework or tool coming out and one of the developers in your team would love to try it. In production.
In this talk I will explain the right strategy for dealing with the rapid changes in JS landscape and choosing the right set of tools for doing the job.
Key takeaways:
Get to know which js tools/libraries works well together.
Which tools/libraries are not cool anymore and why?
How to deal with library/tool dependency conflicts?
How to find good quality tools and frameworks?
An overview of the motivation behind progressive web apps, how to implement them, and other useful tools and discussion. For full presentation with usable links: https://goo.gl/VRKE6L

At the origin there was a monolith. Behind a successful startup often lies a single technology application (Java, Rails, etc.) that grows until it hardly scales with the number of customers and likewise its development process as developers increase. A consolidated strategy on the back-end is to progressively slice the monolith into micro-services. A dual solution on the front-end is to gradually extract HTML, CSS and JavaScript code into a Single Page Application, applying some techniques like the ones I've been maturing during my experience in Workshare.

"Refactoring to a Single Page Application" by Marcello Teodori

Since Docker burst onto the scene, programmers have seen a radical shift in almost every ecosystem. From setting up environments to tooling to deployment, containers now influence many applications. The good news is that the idea of containers has taken hold, and we are no longer beholden to a technological monopoly. Let's look at the container ecosystem outside Docker and what a genuinely open, containerized future holds.
Most people understand the basics of git. Creating a repository, branching, merging... those are all pretty simple tasks. Part of the power of git resides in its ability to actually manipulate the history of a repository and clean things up, remove things that should not have been there, and do detective work. Let's spin up our time machine and mess around with the past.
Using PHP Functions! (Not those functions, Google Cloud Functions)Chris Tankersley
Serverless computing has taken web development by storm, and Google has recently updated their Google Cloud Functions to support PHP 7.4! We'll walk through setting up a function and how it all works.
We live in a world that is powered by APIs. OpenAPI is a specification and set of related tooling that can make it easy to design, describe, and help build an API in many different languages. See how easy it is to hit the ground running using OpenAPI, Spotlight, and OpenAPI Generator to drop in an API into any project.
Docker is not just about deploying containers to hundreds of servers. Developers need tools that help with day-to-day tasks and to do their job more effectively. Docker is a great addition to most workflows, from starting projects to writing utilities to make development less repetitive. Docker can help take care of many problems developers face during development such as “it works on my machine” as well as keeping tooling consistent between all of the people working on a project. See how easy it is to take an existing development setup and application and move it over to Docker, no matter your operating system.
Web applications are becoming the norm for users, and being able to handle thousands of requests per second is happening more and more. Developers spend an enormous amount of time making sure that their applications are as fast as possible, but tuning your web server can only go so far. Async Programming is being used by many languages as a quick and easy way to serve web applications, and PHP is no exception. Libraries like ReactPHP and Amp, alongside extensions like Swoole, give developers broad choices for how to build their applications using async principles. See how these tools and async programming can help your application stay quick and agile.
Docker is quickly becoming an invaluable development and deployment tool for many organizations. Come and spend the day learning about what Docker is, how to use it, how to integrate it into your workflow, and build an environment that works for you and the rest of your team. This hands-on tutorial will give you the kick-start needed to start using Docker effectively.
Thanks to tools like Vagrant, Puppet/Chef, and Platform as a Service services like Heroku, developers are extremely used to being able to spin up a development environment that is the same every time. What if we could go a step further and make sure our development environment is not only using the same software, but 100% configured and set up like production. Docker is fast becoming an important part of many developers toolkits. Not only are more developers using it day-to-day, but it is also becoming an important tool for deployments. We'll look at what Docker is, why you should consider using it, and all of the features developers can take advantage of.
Humanity has seen an explosion of technology over the span of almost no time. We have gone from computers being mechanical devices for crunching trajectories to computers making decisions on whether or not we are dressing fashionably. We have also seen an explosion of services that resolve around massive amounts of data about ourselves. At the same time we see developers working on Tor, ad blockers, privacy tools, and ways to keep your data yours. Programmers just like us are building these systems. What are our moral obligations to the technology that we are building? Strap on your tinfoil hat and [REDACTED]
The Command Line should be a developer's best friend, but many times it sits there, sad and lonely as we use to call other programs. Behind that unassuming little blinking cursor is an entire world of productivity, just waiting to be strung together. There is even an entire scripting language hidden underneath that is just waiting for you to use it! Let's investigate BASH, the shell that's syntax is universal across almost all systems (and find out why your Linux scripts do not always work on OSX).
Many know of the famous quote, "Premature optimization is the root of all evil," but most people do not know the full quote or understand the context in which optimization is considered evil. As with anything in programming optimization is evil, maybe. Stop using excuses for slow code, and start to think about the places and tools that you can use to optimize. Thankfully there are are many different tools like xhprof, Valgrind, and others to help us out and properly optimize our code for those times when we need to dig deep into our code.

OOP Is More Then Cars and Dogs - Midwest PHP 2017Chris Tankersley
When developers are introduced to Object Oriented Programming, one of the first things that happens is that they are taught that nouns turn into objects, verbs into methods, and Dog is a subclass of Animal. OOP is more than just turning things into classes and objects and showing that both Boats and Cars have motors, and that Dogs and Cats both speak(). Let's look at OOP in real world settings and go beyond cars and dogs, and see how to use Object Oriented Programming properly in PHP. Traits, Composition, Inheritance, none of it is off limits!
Congrats! You and your coworkers love Docker. Docker has become an increasingly helpful tool when it comes to devops. We can now build smaller, more robust local development setups with the promise of mirroring production. One thing that still plagues many situations is how to get those containers into production and update them over time. We will explore different tools for setting up, configuring, and maintaining containers as they go live.

Coming to Terms with OOP In Drupal - php[world] 2016Chris Tankersley
Drupal 8 has not only brought to the table a much improved admin experience, but has now moved on from its procedural roots into the realm of Object Oriented Programming. While this is a great thing for developers, many Drupal developers have never been introduced to OOP. This talk will explore a very high-level overview of objects, inheritance, composition, and how to architect your code as it relates to Drupal 8.
Open Source is one of the core tenets of the PHP language and the community. PHP would not be here if it was not for some of the ideals around software development that occurred in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. How did the open source movement start, and why is PHP one of the few languages that still hold true to those early days of programming? Let's talk about where open source started, and find out how we got here.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

● Make the front end people do all the work
12. 12
It's not all great
● Users have to have JS enabled
● SEO SUUUUUUUUUUCKS
● This will probably break navigation

What does it do?
„A standardized solution of integrating external
applications with Drupal. Service callbacks may
be used with multiple interfaces like REST,
XMLRPC, JSON, JSON-RPC, SOAP, AMF, etc.
This allows a Drupal site to provide web
services via multiple interfaces while using the
same callback code.“
