The document analyzes scenes from a film through the lenses of cinematography, sound, editing, and mise-en-scene. It summarizes two scenes: 1) The protagonist Connor's first day at a new school, where shots convey his reactions to bullying. 2) A fantasy sequence where Connor imagines his band playing at a 1950s prom, portrayed through costumes, music, and editing that contrast the dull reality. Overall, the techniques are used to show Connor feeling isolated but hoping to find connection and love through music.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Sing street - analysis
1. Liberty Mason
Arriving at school
Cinematography
Shot/ reverse shot point of view is used in order to portray how Connor is reacting to his
first day of school, where he has changed from a private school to a state school. His first
impression and experiences he faces at the school is encounters with the bullies who
expose him to things such as fighting, spitting and even throwing a rat at him. By using this
type of shot he is, really showing his emotions and reactions in a very personal and realistic
way.
Mid Shot, not close up of his face, to show him in the crowd, and shows how he kind of
sticks out compared to the others, the audience learn that the other boys are not very
accepting and are very violent and mean towards him for no reason, and shows
stereotypical aspects of typical school bullies.
Moving camera to show him moving though school, gives a full view and layout of the
school and how the students interact with each other in the boisterous way, they are not
nice and very aggressive towards one another, and Connor being the polite young boy he is
sticks out as they can see how venerable he really is.
Sound
Non-diegetic sound, of the music playing loudly to the viewers while the people in the film
cannot hear it, but you can still hear them fighting and being loud. While the rock music in
the background plays, certain sounds have a close up and are highlighted for example
comments the boys make at one another as they walk as Connor walks through the crowd
of school boys or the slap on someone’s have received from one of the boys to another.
While you hear enough of the diegetic sound to hear the comments in comparison to the
non-diegetic sound presented.
It is very messy, and oppressive which helps present to the viewers the disjointed and messy
atmosphere effectively the representation of the sound, and stereotypes you can create
from the music which it is being associated with.
Editing
The editing cuts between Midshots of Connor walking, and his face and everything he see
while walking into school. Connor tries to blend in and be neutral causing no disruption. The
editing of this is simple, as its cuts between two shots in time with events and music, of the
scene.
Mise-En-Scene
As he walks in different personalities are being portrayed, and are done so by the student’s
uniforms. While every student has a set uniform they have almost created their own unique
version, which is a representation of them, comparing this to Connor he sticks out almost as
2. Liberty Mason
most of the boys are very rough, and scruffy, while Connor is very reserved, and smart
meaning he sticks out compared.
Things being represented such as the smoking, spitting and other activity which are frowned
upon, as they are typical related to rebellious and dangerous behaviour of an individual,
which is relevant to the film set 30 years ago and now to present day.
Finally, there is a teacher, who is staged up above everyone, and does nothing about the
behaviour, while observing it but refuses to interfere.
All Together
The scene uses these different techniques to show Connor isolated and alone amongst the
crowd. Cinematography combined with sound, editing and Mise-En-scene helps achieve the
image of Connor and how he is finding, and shows in many ways how he finds arriving at his
new school. You could suggest the cinematography and Mise-En-scene focus on your scenes
of eyes, and sound what you hear the two combined really portrays this to the audience
Connors feelings.
Drive it like you stole it
Cinematography
When she arrives, the camera follows her though the hall to show us the transformation, of
the dull hall that is empty and Eco’s, to this 50’s prom, which is booming and lively in his
fantasy.
Sound
The sound is diegetic because the characters and the viewers can hear it, and used as the
band are playing their song. While during their fantasy the band actually perform the, for
real in the hall the music is being playing on a tape and the band in miming. The difference
of sound quality of reality and fantasy is drastic the reality is dull and dead while the fantasy
is loud and booming with everyone enjoying it.
Editing
The editing has no real rhythm, just invisible editing of the band and the crowd. Expect the
beginning and the end, the shot reverse of him looking at the door waiting for the girl to
arrive, and follow her into the hall and shots with simple shot editing of the scene before
she walks in is dull and quiet, while as she walks in more people arrive in the ‘50s’ prom, as
explained earlier by Connor as a back to the future reference.
The shot/ reverse POV key shows the narrative moments, of the fantasy for example when
his mom and dad (who are spit up of this point of the film) are now together in this 50’s
fantasy.
3. Liberty Mason
Mise-En-Scene
The first initially thing you notice when present in the fantasy is how everyone present is
out of character, everyone’s in costume in 50’s style dress sense, and is happy and dancing
to the sort of style they would in that time era. Balloons are everywhere showing that a sort
of celebration is happening, while taking the time period into consideration in Ireland they
would not be having a ‘prom’ as it is seen as a very American thing.
From the perspective, outside of the fantasy the clothes they wear are dull and dark, in
comparison to the bright coloured ones in the American fantasy.
Messages And Values
The main message which is reflected is, the message to never give up, and to keep going
and aiming what you want and this is clear though out the film. For example, when Connor
worked his way for Raphinas love all thought the film, starting by making a band for her to
model in the music video, the drive he has shown a message of never giving up and not
letting people decide what you want, which is very rock and roll and ties in nicely to the
themes being portrayed thought-out. It also has a sense of family matter, and shows how
family sometimes falls apart, and how’s it not always easy to sort out issues and differences
but reflects a sense of unity at the end, when Connor and Raphina goes to fantasy land at
the bottom of the Irish sea, which is the land of love, which ends the film, on unity and a
sense freedom.
All together
This scene follows the different techniques, and the use of cinematography, sound editing
and Mise-En-Scene really portrays the fantasy Connor has about his band playing In a 50s
style prom performance.
