Recommended Rates
The recommended rates; are rates set by the BECTU. Which are then
based on consultation with members which reflects the
recommended rate that the employees should earn in the particular
job role within the media industry in order to avoid underpayment.
The union members working within the film/commercial/TV industry

Production Division at BECTU head office.
Public Liability Insurance
The public Liability insurance is a type of insurance document in the
media industry that covers the compensation payments and legal
costs, for members of the public who have sued the production doe
to property damage or some type of injury. The BECTU provided
cover for claims up to £10 million and the policy can extend to claim
up to £25,000 per claim on property loaded to and in the custody of
members.
One to One Support
The UK staff and freelancers working within the media and
entertainment are supported by BTEC, in order to support careers. It
helps improve your career and improve your overall working
conditions. They also provide training, legal services and low cost
insurances for freelancers.
Collective Bargaining
Collective bargaining is part of the BTUC, as it help to negotiate
terms between employer and employee. This is aimed towards
agreement on salaries, working conditions and other factors. This is
put in order to protect employees rights and avoid underpay or bad
conditions.
Help with Tax and National Insurance
When working in facility’s such as freelancers, you are not in a facility
where you are provided help with doing taxes, so you have to do
them yourself. Therefore the BECTU provides a guidance documents
which helps you to do so, provided by HMRC. This helps freelancers
within the media already and the entertainment industry to identify
the key areas when paying tax and national insurance on their own.
Networking
Networking with the BECTU is where members of the organisation
meet up in order to avoid, missed opportunity’s as the media and
entertainment industry are a face paced working industry. It helps
share job opportunities and resources in order to help each other
and lead in processes within tour career as a independent film
maker.
