Intro to Pedestrian Wind Comfort (PWC)
Technical Presentation
● Pedestrian Wind Comfort (PWC) is the name
given to analyzing comfort around an urban area
on a pedestrian due to the effects of wind.
● The buildings we design can drastically affect this
comfort where many wind interactions with
buildings can cause windy conditions at
pedestrian-level height.
● CFD can be used to assess these effects, and
SimScale has automated this process to make it as
easy as possible, whilst maintaining many controls
required to cater to a variety of scenarios.

● High detail model with topology, terrain, trees,
and detailed buildings.
● Main objective:
○ To show the Pedestrian Wind Comfort
(PWC) in the city area.
○ To show how highly detailed geometries
from AccuCities are a great fit for the
PWC workflow.

● AccuCities provides geometries of many major
UK cities including London, Birmingham, and
Bristol.
● Geometry is available on a tile-by-tile basis,
where several sample models are available.
● This sample was kindly provided and
distributed under the Creative Commons
Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY SA) license
● Geometry from AccuCities can be readily used
with the SimScale platform and its PWC/LBM
solver.

● Wind comfort and wind safety determine if a
space is suitable for certain activities, this
could be sitting, standing or walking.
● Lawson LDDC takes into account the wind
speed, probability of exceedance (from a wind
rose), and predefined categories to make this
assessment.

● To determine why a given space might be
uncomfortable for certain activities, we can look at
wind speeds in some predominant directions.
● This allows us to see what wind effects are
generated, and how they could be mitigated.
● Examples include; Downwash, Channeling, and
Corner Acceleration.

  • 4. ● Pedestrian Wind Comfort (PWC) is the name given to analyzing comfort around an urban area on a pedestrian due to the effects of wind. ● The buildings we design can drastically affect this comfort where many wind interactions with buildings can cause windy conditions at pedestrian-level height. ● CFD can be used to assess these effects, and SimScale has automated this process to make it as easy as possible, whilst maintaining many controls required to cater to a variety of scenarios. Small city section from AccuCities ● Location: Bristol, north corner of Castle Park ● 300mx300m block modelled ● High detail model with topology, terrain, trees, and detailed buildings. ● Main objective: ○ To show the Pedestrian Wind Comfort (PWC) in the city area. ○ To show how highly detailed geometries from AccuCities are a great fit for the PWC workflow.   • 12. ● AccuCities provides geometries of many major UK cities including London, Birmingham, and Bristol. ● Geometry is available on a tile-by-tile basis, where several sample models are available. ● This sample was kindly provided and distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY SA) license ● Geometry from AccuCities can be readily used with the SimScale platform and its PWC/LBM solver.   • 18. ● Wind comfort and wind safety determine if a space is suitable for certain activities, this could be sitting, standing or walking. ● Lawson LDDC takes into account the wind speed, probability of exceedance (from a wind rose), and predefined categories to make this assessment. Wind Comfort Probability of exceedance Velocity bins Most casual activity that is deemed comfortable to perform Simulation prepared geometry 18
  • 19. ● To determine why a given space might be uncomfortable for certain activities, we can look at wind speeds in some predominant directions. ● This allows us to see what wind effects are generated, and how they could be mitigated. ● Examples include; Downwash, Channeling, and Corner Acceleration. Assess Wind Speeds Downwash Corner Effect Channeling Effect Tall buildings draw fast air from up high down to pedestrian level. Sharp building corners will see velocity increase as flow separates. Channels between close buildings increase velocity as it passes between them. Correlating wind speed to the comfort criteria 19

  6. Talk about how we will demo PWC using an off the shelf demo project, feel free to pick some info off the slides. Emphasis on the comparison on the right, here we see an extraordinary similarity between real life and CAD.
  7. Talk about AccuCities, Collaboration and how detailed their models are, mention a wide variety of cities available.
  8. Talk about the region of interest, extending the topology, and that by extending it the prevention of flow under the surfaces is made possible. The diagram top right shows the job of the extension, by intersecting the wind tunnel boundaries.
  9. Talk about the speed of setting the simulation up, its a 3 part process, don't dwell on the details

Focus on what the results mean, activities, what are they, give example if not done so in demo, in the blue area in the middle say people might want to be sitting outside eating, as its a restaurant (example). Don't dwell too much on the velocity bins and probabilities, if you need to just mention there are several variations of the comfort map, and also different standards such as NEN8100 and Davenport.
  11. This page focuses on wind results, velocities, and correlating bad comfort for some activities to wind speeds. The main task is to identify downwash, cornering and channeling, and therefore can identify mitigation if needed.
