The Simputer was an inexpensive, open-source handheld computer developed in India as an alternative to PCs. It used a smart card interface allowing multiple users to access a single device. While aiming to sell 50,000 units, only around 4,000 were sold by 2005. Key features included a 320x240 pixel screen, 32MB RAM, touchscreen interface and smart card support for private user data. It ran the Linux operating system on an Intel processor and was intended to provide affordable computing and local language content to users in developing areas.
