SIMON FRITH’S THEORY
By Ashley Joseph
Simon Frith believed music videos came in three types:
Frith thought that these types of videos were the most common, Performance
videos feature the artist(s) performing in someway whether that be singing or
playing an instrument. The aim of performance videos are to give the view a
sense of what an artists live performance is like and what the atmosphere feels
like and as a result they are more likely to go to one of their concerts. This
can also make a music video look a little more interesting.
Frith thought that narrative videos present a sequence of events, this creates a
story throughout the music video(generally a love story). The generic plot is,
boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back by the end of the video, this is
a love narrative which is common.
Frith thought conceptual music videos all rely on a poetic form(commonly a
metaphor). These types of videos are very ambiguous and therefore each
viewer will like/dislike the song for very different reasons as they will
interpret.
