The Silk Road was not a single road but a network of trade routes connecting the Han Dynasty in China and the Roman Empire during their peak periods between 206 BC to 220 AD. Traders faced many hardships along the routes like harsh climates, bandits, and dangers but transported valuable goods between the empires like silk, spices, gold, horses and new technologies. Both civilizations benefited greatly from the regular exchange of commodities and ideas.
