This document contains a presentation on short dental implants given by Dr. Mohammed Alshehri at the ITI Congress Middle East in Abu Dhabi, UAE in December 2012. The presentation defines short implants, reviews the available evidence on their success rates compared to longer implants or bone augmentation procedures, and identifies factors that can affect the success of short implants such as surgical protocol, implant design, surface characteristics, crown-to-implant ratio and occlusal forces. Studies show short implants have high success rates, especially when placed in the mandible, and may be preferable to more complex augmentation procedures.

Minimally Invasive Extraction and Immediate Implant Placement with Single-Sta...Abu-Hussein Muhamad
This case report describes extraction of a fractured left maxillary lateral incisor tooth, followed by immediate placement of a dental implant in the prepared socket and temporization by a bonded restoration. Materials And Methods: The tooth was extracted with minimal hard and soft tissue trauma and without flap reflection. The socket was prepared to the required depth and a Implant was inserted. An impression was made 4 months after implant insertion, and a definitive restoration was placed. Results: The atraumatic operating technique and the immediate insertion of the Implant resulted in the preservation of the hard and soft tissues at the extraction site. The patient exhibited no clinical or radiologic complications through 12 months of clinical monitoring after loading. Conclusion: The dental implant and provisional restoration provided the patient with immediate esthetics, function, comfort and most importantly preservation of tissues.
There is no question that given the current state of the art in dentistry, that dental implants are pretty much the best way to replace teeth; they are stand alone tooth replacement systems that look and function just like natural teeth. They do not attach to adjacent teeth like a fixed bridge and don't have to be taken in and out like removable partial dentures.
A dental implant is a tooth root replacement made of titanium, which has the unique property of being osteophilic (osteo-bone, philic-loving) and actually fuses to bone. A crown, the part of the tooth that you see in your mouth, is attached to the implant. And the great thing about implants is they are not susceptible to decay or periodontal (gum) disease in the same way that teeth are.

Introduction. The differences in the supporting structure of the implant make them more susceptible to inflammation and bone
loss when plaque accumulates as compared to the teeth. Therefore, a comprehensive maintenance protocol should be followed
to ensure the longevity of the implant. Material and Method. A research to provide scientific evidence supporting the feasibility
of various implant care methods was carried out using various online resources to retrieve relevant studies published since 1985.
Results.The electronic search yielded 708 titles, out of which a total of 42 articles were considered appropriate and finally included
for the preparation of this review article. Discussion. A typicalmaintenance visit for patients with dental implants should last 1 hour
and should be scheduled every 3 months to evaluate any changes in their oral and general history. It is essential to have a proper
instrument selection to prevent damage to the implant surface and trauma to the peri-implant tissues. Conclusion. As the number
of patients opting for dental implants is increasing, it becomes increasingly essential to know the differences between natural teeth
and implant care and accept the challenges of maintaining these restorations.

on Prospective Clinical Trials
• Short dental implants had an estimated survival rate of 88.1% at 168 months
while standard dental implants had a similar estimated survival rate of 86.7%.
• The peak failure rate of short dental implants was found to occur between 4-6
years of function compared to 6-8 years for standard implants.

placed in augmented bone.
• Short implants might be a preferable choice to bone augmentation, since the
treatment is faster, cheaper and associated with less morbidity.

recommendations.

2009)
