- 1. Storyboard Pre-production By Adam Kalabiska A Level Media Studies
- 2. Storyboard The storyboard is a drawing of each shot as planned, accompanied by a description of the action and the dialogue for that part of the sequence. This is done in order to save time from making tough decisions on set such as choosing: composition, camera angle, camera movement, actors, blocking and quality. Essentially pre- editing the film. Film is a visual medium, written word is naturally limited in what it can express about a visual world and therefore storyboards are popular among directors, as they have no such limitations. It allows for a clear overlook of the entire story and how it functions as a whole. Storyboards don't have to be stuck to completely, directors may simplify the action or pursue ideas which they get on set that day. A storyboard may additionally indicate and inform the crew on the usage of special equipment. They may also include photos from real life locations (though this material is usually supplied by a location scout). Bong Joon-Ho, director responsible for unforgettable films such as Memories of Murder (2003) and Parasite (2019), states that he doesn't think storyboarding is necessary for making good films. He worries that being so structured eliminates some of the magic that comes from spontaneity on set.
