At eighteen years old, fitting my experiences and activities into those two categories is quite

A scholarly work that has received widespread attention and recognition in the Strategic
Management area and beyond is Porter s (1980, 1985) typology of generic competitive strategies:
Cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. These three actually fall into two basic categories.
The focus strategy calls for concentration on a niche or a narrow segment. But Porter says that
success in this strategy can be achieved either via cost leadership or differentiation. Thus, cost
leadership and differentiation are the two basic strategies in Porter s typology. These two then
are the subject of discussion in this paper. This contribution of Porter (1980, 1985) has had a
deep and pervasive influence on business theory and practice. Since then many strategists from
diverse fields have examined or made reference to his work. Most of this voluminous literature
appeared during the eighties and the nineties. The purpose of this paper is to offer a critique of
Porter s work, and a synthesis of this literature. Thompson and Strickland (2008, chap. 5) have

they can mirror themselves with, rather than somebody that they have no relation to or does not
have a connection with. (Rushton, 1991) It is fathomable how helping a family, relative or
somebody we are more attached to is a normal reaction. But it is incomprehensible to explain when
humans show compassion towards complete strangers. This altruistic behaviour seemingly suggests
that true altruism could undeniably exist.
Empathy Altruism Model argues that altruism does exist and explains why people help others
even though they are not related. The Empathy Altruism Model, is established on the idea that
emotional response of empathy is produced when an individual is seen to be in need. It could be
argued that the individual feels empathy for the other person who is in need, and being able to
feel and take into consideration of another s feelings, directs the helping behaviour at relieving the
person who is in need and therefore altruism is produced by altruistic reasons . (Cialdini, Brown,
Lewis, Luce, Neuberg,

Gender Stereotypes And Gender Roles
Within society today both males and females are expected to fit in, fulfil and adopt, specific
stereotypes and gender roles. In the western world, women are traditionally characterised and
expected to be maternal housewife s, who are obedient and attractive; whereas males are seen to be
the breadwinners, who are muscular independent and strong. These characteristics have become
normal in society, and enforce the genderstereotype roles. However, when these gender norms are
disturbed, this leads to the creation of new labels and stereotypes, people to be ridiculed and
questions to be asked. Although, these traditional gender stereotypes have been around for many
years with little change; they are now being confronted and challenged by people within society.
One particular area in which these controversial gender stereotypes are being examined is in
physical activity and sport. In comparing traditional female gender stereotypes in sports, to that of
those in the 21st century, it can be seen that stereotypes in female athletics have improved but there
is still a long way to go. Through their increased involvement in sports and physical activity; they
are challenging the restrictive views and sexist barriers about their athletic ability, physical
appearance and participation. However, it is also evident that the traditional gender stereotypes still
prevail. In this essay I examine how gender stereotypes have impacted on females who participate
in physical activity,
