The 2nd Annual Social Media Study surveyed SheSpeaks members in 2009 about their social media usage and interactions with brands. Key findings include:
- Facebook participation increased dramatically, with 86% of women having profiles compared to 58% in 2008. Usage was up across all age groups.
- Facebook has surpassed MySpace, with 95% of women with social profiles now on Facebook versus 42% on MySpace.
- Women are more actively engaged on social media, with 72% logging into sites daily compared to 53% in 2008.
- However, mobile social usage remains limited, with most women texting or calling when waiting instead of using social apps.
The narrative of social networking sites have a male-centric theme to each story, and, as the stories are retold, women are noticeably absent. The rise of Pinterest, a growing social networking site, is causing the story to change. Pinterest has gained popularity among Americans, and has garnered a reputation as a site that appeals mostly to women. This story is new to the media, who further reiterate how surprising and unusual it is. This presentation argues that women have been involved in computing all along, that this narrative which includes women is nothing new, and analyzes the discourse of both the American and British media to uncover the deeper story being told.
Amaze generation phase 2 final - October 2013Microsoft
The Amaze Generation are tomorrow’s society shapers. Today’s technological change is part of their lives – it’s unremarkable; they adopt it and change it at will. But how is it changing them and how will they, in turn, change society?
We are following a group of 10-15 year olds (our Amaze Generation) over a period of five years to understand their digital selves. We want to know how they evolve behaviourally, how they interact with digital tools, sites, networks… how tomorrow’s generation will communicate and shape tomorrow’s technology.
Aaron Smith will share the Pew Internet Project’s most recent data on the constantly shifting digital ecosystem in the U.S. and highlight some major trends that have emerged since the project’s inception in 1999.

Social Media for Pharma: Past, Present and FutureGigi Peterkin
The potential of using social media to increase awareness of healthcare issues, find health related information - and products - has become the ‘hot’ subject in pharmaceutical communications; an increasing proliferation of ‘patient-to-physician’ and ‘physician-to-physician’ websites means that healthcare information is more widely available than ever before. How can pharma be engaging in this conversation...and with whom?
Originally presented at the Social Media in Pharma workshop in London, this presentation takes a look back at where the industry has been, where many industry players are, and what's on the horizon for digital health.

Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.
Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job?
By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan
Stanford Closer Look Series
Overview:
Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”).
We ask:
• Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over?
• What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent?
• Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent?
• Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?
Still Setting the Pace in Social Media: The First Longitudinal Study of Usage...Elizabeth Lupfer
This research shows that charitable organizations are still outpacing the business world and academia in their use of social media. In the latest study (2008) a remarkable eighty-nine percent of charitable organizations are using some form of social media including blogs, podcasts, message boards, social networking, video blogging and wikis. A majority (57%) of the organizations are blogging. Forty-five percent of those studied report social media is very important to their fundraising strategy. While these organizations are best known for their non-profit status and their fundraising campaigns, they demonstrate an acute, and still growing, awareness of the importance of Web 2.0 strategies in meeting their objectives.
Campus Party 2011 Consumer Social Media SurveyJeffreyGroup
How do consumers view companies and brands that take an active role in communicating with their customers through social media? This survey reveals how consumers expect the brands they patronize to relate to them online, and the findings show that trust and perceptions of reliability increase when brands engage in real dialogue online. Consumers will listen, but they want to be heard as well. When the balance of brand communications favors two-way communication, the brand and its relationships benefit.
