This 2017 SUMMIT workshop showcased TRU’s sexual violence policy and the province-wide collaboration process involved in its development. The President’s Task Force identified in 2015 provided a strong foundation for policy development, educational initiatives, and response and reporting processes, resulting in a robust example that can be modeled by others.

This document summarizes a dialogue session from the 2017 HMHC Summit that focused on promoting healthy relationships with food and substances among college students. The session included introductions from representatives from various colleges and universities. From 2014-2015, focus groups were conducted and a framework was developed. Currently, the project is engaging with interested campuses to identify priorities and ways to support healthy choices. Some big ideas discussed included gaining a better understanding of healthy relationships with food and substances, making healthy choices the easy choice, and promoting social support and responsibility. Factors that influence eating and substance use, such as transitions, socialization, policies and access were also discussed. The session closed with suggestions for continued involvement and conversation.
The development, implementation, and evaluation of a mental health strategy
The document outlines the development, implementation, and evaluation of the University of Calgary's Campus Mental Health Strategy. It describes how the strategy was developed through a task force and working group process that identified gaps and formulated 28 recommendations across 6 strategic areas. Implementation involved expanding programming, enhancing supports, and developing new initiatives. Evaluation of the strategy occurs at multiple levels through a subcommittee and research partnerships to assess impact over time. The overall goal is to promote mental health, well-being and a supportive campus environment.

Participants considered the intersections of two pressing issues on post-secondary campuses: sexual violence and mental health. Working from the Framework for Post-Secondary Student Mental Health, participants engaged in a broader discussion around these issues, as well as discussions regarding education, skill building, services and support. This session offered opportunities to learn from existing work that has been done in these areas and to think through new possibilities for campus awareness campaigns, the integration of mental health frameworks into policies and procedures, and broader shifts in campus culture.

Participants from SFU and UBC jointly facilitated the session that provided a venue to share approaches for engaging faculty members and institutional leadership in creating learning environments that better support student mental health. With the growing recognition of the importance of a systemic health promotion approach in higher education- one that aims to shift the academic culture to better promote student flourishing, positive mental health and resilience- the impact of the overall campus environment, including learning environments, is a critical area for research and innovation in practice.

Promoting health with campus substance use policy
This resource is the first in a series of discussion papers from CARBC that offers a potential framework for guiding thought and action on substance use policy. Dan Reist, Assistant Director, and Tim Dyck, Research Associate, encouraged 2017 SUMMIT participants to carefully consider the broad theoretical perspective of the frame, and then confer with colleagues on how it might be applied to policies within their own campus community context. The framework echoes the Okanagan Charter’s call to adopt an approach to campus well-being that promotes holistic health in all aspects of campus culture and makes it an integral, vital consideration in all policy initiatives.

The Peer and Student Support (PaSS) Group provides educational support and mentorship for students and preceptors in rural communities participating in the University of Alberta's Integrated Community Clerkship program. Data from student and preceptor surveys indicate that visits from PaSS members are seen as supportive and provide an opportunity for feedback, mentorship, and social support. While winter weather poses challenges, both students and preceptors value the role of the PaSS Group in facilitating learning and strengthening relationships between rural preceptors and the university.

This study examined the relationship between involvement levels and sense of belonging in first-year students at Michigan State University (MSU). The researchers found that students who participated in 20 or more campus activities had significantly higher levels of belonging than those with less involvement. However, few first-year students at MSU participated in high-impact practices beyond first-year seminars. The study suggests MSU should increase opportunities for involvement like learning communities to improve student belongingness and retention.

Service Learning in Dental and Dental Hygiene Education
-learning is known by many, widely varying definitions which take into consideration the reciprocal needs of the student and community, bridging academic theory with community service and instilling civic responsibility. Service combined with learning adds value to each and transforms both. Service-learning must be an academic activity: it can be course-based, competency-based, or a structured volunteer experience. In dental education the most obvious community locations are community health center dental clinics, hospital dental clinics, and private offices in areas designated as dental health professions shortage areas (DHPSA). Most importantly, service-learning occurs only when both the providers and the recipients of the service benefit from the activities.
Although service-learning is now a major national movement, it is still catching on as a new approach in education. Kim Isringhausen will provide a framework for service-learning in dental and dental hygiene education in which planning, implementation and evaluation can be built.

Is there a link between extra curricular clubs and attendance
This study examines strategies to reduce absenteeism among disadvantaged ("Pupil Premium") students. The researchers hypothesize that an intervention involving weekly meetings between students and administrators, and participation in extracurricular activities, will increase students' connection to school and improve attendance. Preliminary findings show positive correlations between extracurricular participation and higher perceived teacher support, school attendance, and student happiness. The full study will analyze these relationships further and compare the results to existing literature on improving school engagement and outcomes for at-risk youth.
Mentor - DATE review in Brighton and Hove
Mentor’s Quality Assurance services provide guidance and tools to support local capacity building through developing and strengthening sustainable prevention networks at a local level. The alcohol and drug education review in Brighton and Hove not only allowed Mentor to work closely with schools to understand the current capacity and expertise, but also made links and developed strategies to strengthen communication and collaboration with other relevant actors within the community.

In May of 2016, members of the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) community issued an open letter to President Karen Haynes advocating for actions to encourage the inclusion of trans and gender non-conforming individuals at CSUSM. In November of 2016, President Haynes issued a call for participation in a Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Task Force (TGNCTF) “in an effort to ensure ongoing support for members of our Trans and Gender Non-Conforming community at Cal State San Marcos.” The TGNCTF was convened in December 2016 as advisory to the President, and by March 17th, 2017 was charged to “Review and make recommendations regarding protocols, programs and services for CSUSM Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Communities to include: Preferred Name Policy Implementation;; Restrooms;; Training;; Housing. Your participation and knowledge will greatly benefit the University and the goals we are working to achieve, which include providing an open, welcoming and safe environment all members of our community.”
In response to this charge, the TGNCTF is pleased to provide an overview of the current status of policies, procedures, and actions relevant to trans and gender non-conforming communities at CSUSM, and to provide recommendations to further improve the environment and experience of our trans students, staff, and faculty. We do so from a variety of perspectives, including those of trans- identified and trans-allied task force (TF) members, trans and allied communities at CSUSM, and stakeholders critical to the implementation of these recommendations. Careful consideration was given to federal and state law, as well as best practice guidance from organizations dedicated to trans advocacy.

He received his medical degree from Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan. His experience includes conducting research on COVID-19 vaccines in Africa for Management Sciences for Health and clinical work as a medical resident in Taiwan. He co-founded Grad Student Regrets to help Harvard students make the most of graduate school. His leadership roles include developing medical resident rotation courses and coordinating a large White Coat Ceremony event in Taiwan.
Service Learning in Dental and Dental Hygiene Education
-learning is known by many, widely varying definitions which take into consideration the reciprocal needs of the student and community, bridging academic theory with community service and instilling civic responsibility. Service combined with learning adds value to each and transforms both. Service-learning must be an academic activity: it can be course-based, competency-based, or a structured volunteer experience. In dental education the most obvious community locations are community health center dental clinics, hospital dental clinics, and private offices in areas designated as dental health professions shortage areas (DHPSA). Most importantly, service-learning occurs only when both the providers and the recipients of the service benefit from the activities.
Although service-learning is now a major national movement, it is still catching on as a new approach in education. Kim Isringhausen will provide a framework for service-learning in dental and dental hygiene education in which planning, implementation and evaluation can be built.

This study examines strategies to reduce absenteeism among disadvantaged ("Pupil Premium") students. The researchers hypothesize that an intervention involving weekly meetings between students and administrators, and participation in extracurricular activities, will increase students' connection to school and improve attendance. Preliminary findings show positive correlations between extracurricular participation and higher perceived teacher support, school attendance, and student happiness. The full study will analyze these relationships further and compare the results to existing literature on improving school engagement and outcomes for at-risk youth.

In May of 2016, members of the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) community issued an open letter to President Karen Haynes advocating for actions to encourage the inclusion of trans and gender non-conforming individuals at CSUSM. In November of 2016, President Haynes issued a call for participation in a Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Task Force (TGNCTF) “in an effort to ensure ongoing support for members of our Trans and Gender Non-Conforming community at Cal State San Marcos.” The TGNCTF was convened in December 2016 as advisory to the President, and by March 17th, 2017 was charged to “Review and make recommendations regarding protocols, programs and services for CSUSM Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Communities to include: Preferred Name Policy Implementation;; Restrooms;; Training;; Housing. Your participation and knowledge will greatly benefit the University and the goals we are working to achieve, which include providing an open, welcoming and safe environment all members of our community.”
In response to this charge, the TGNCTF is pleased to provide an overview of the current status of policies, procedures, and actions relevant to trans and gender non-conforming communities at CSUSM, and to provide recommendations to further improve the environment and experience of our trans students, staff, and faculty. We do so from a variety of perspectives, including those of trans- identified and trans-allied task force (TF) members, trans and allied communities at CSUSM, and stakeholders critical to the implementation of these recommendations. Careful consideration was given to federal and state law, as well as best practice guidance from organizations dedicated to trans advocacy.

Messaging and peer support boards are tailored for LGBTQ and heterosexually identified youth. eNavigation is focused on service linkages via text or telephone emphasizing direct connections (warm hand-offs) rather than simply providing referral information. Coaching is strengths-based and client centered, typically initiated with an in-person meeting, but primarily delivered in brief follow up sessions by phone, video-chat, or texting. Coach training and delivery is guided by modular evidence-based practice elements (versus scripted and structured manuals), and monitored and prompted by a mobile-web application.

Abstract
Research shows that sexual assault is one of the most pervasive
problems on college and university campuses. Some research also
indicates that sexual assault is the most common violent crime
committed in campus communities. This case study describes and
analyzes the development, implementation and evaluation of a
social marketing campaign for a university committed to the pri-
mary prevention of sexual violence. The Health Communication
Campaign Framework provided theoretical and practical guidance
for the working group during all phases of the campaign process.
Campaign messages were designed to educate students about what
consent is and to increase their comfort level in obtaining verbal,
sober consent before having sex. The campaign also is critically
analyzed with recommendations for how to address a sensitive is-
sue, such as sexual violence, in messages displayed throughout a
campus community.

Sexual violence is one of the most pervasive
problems on college and university cam-
puses,1 and the most common violent crime
committed in campus communities.2 Sexual
violence encompasses a range of offenses
that are perpetrated against someone’s will,
including a completed, nonconsensual sex
act; an attempted nonconsensual sex act;
and an abusive sexual contact.3 Every two

States (U.S.) and the chances of being raped
are four times greater for a female college

Gathering data on how teaching practices impact student well being
This document summarizes research on teaching practices that impact student mental health and wellbeing. The research included surveys of over 5,000 students in 2015 and 2016 asking about their experiences with different teaching practices and which ones positively impacted their wellbeing. Focus groups were also held with students. Interviews were conducted with instructors identified by students as supporting wellbeing. The research found that student wellbeing is supported by effective teaching strategies that motivate learning, a sense of belonging through connections to peers and instructors, and support for the whole student beyond academics. A teaching practices checklist was created to translate the findings into implementation.

Education is the key for sustainable progress recognizing that for learning to be truly effective, the right environment must be cultivated. These realizations put into motion our vision for Balanga “to be a University Town by the year 2020.” Attaining this aim would involve the replication of a “university setting” within the entire city to encourage optimum learning. The City of Balanga earned the Philippine Department of Health’s (DOH) Hall of Fame “Red Orchid Award” for a 100% smoke-free environment and the Outstanding Healthy Lifestyle Advocacy Award. This endeavor would not have been possible without the cooperation and involvement of the entire Balanga community, the establishment of the University Town Education Council (UTEC) encouraging open communication among the public/private sector and the academe. Balanga City’s goal to promote a conducive learning environment has resulted in transforming the youth into well-informed citizens who value a healthy lifestyle and actively participate in community health development.
An International Charter for Changing Campuses that Change the World
This document discusses the need to go beyond just implementing the Charter and instead transform universities and society as a whole to be truly health-promoting. It argues we must ask profound questions about purpose, profit, and our passions to guide this transformation. Universities should enable full human development, not just health. Transformation requires addressing multiple "P's", playing different roles, and maintaining passion like the hummingbird story depicts. The journey will be long but incremental progress can be made through questions and small actions each day.

Placing Our University Campuses in the Context of their Regional Landscapes
Lael Parrott, Director of the Okanagan Institute for Biodiversity, Resilience, and Ecosystem Services (BRAES), UBC Okanagan, Kelowna, BC, Canada, presented at the 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges.
Conventional approaches to sustainability focus on a harm reduction and damage limitation agenda. The theoretical emergence of regenerative sustainability argues we should place social and ecological imperatives on equal footing, organizing around the idea that human activity can simultaneously improve environmental and human wellbeing. This session was used to explore the potential and practice of this sustainability narrative on higher education campuses. Universities and other higher education settings are unique in their ability to serve as living labs and agents of change for sustainability: they are single owner/occupiers, have a public mandate to create new knowledge and practices for community benefit, and integrate teaching and learning. To that end, UBC is transforming its campuses into living laboratories for sustainability. Faculty, staff and students, along with private, public and NGO sector partners, use the University’s physical setting, as well education and research capabilities, to test, study, teach, apply and share lessons learned, technologies created and policies developed. This talk reported on how academic and operational sustainability activities can support a vision for enhancing environmental and human well-being.
The “German HPU Network” and the Role of Networks

Founded in 1995 with initially five network members, the German HPU network has since defined its goals and ways to support member organisations in their processes towards becoming a Health Promoting University. During the last 20 years the network has grown to more than 80 member universities and is now representing the largest network of Health Promoting Universities world-wide, and thus healthy working, living and learning environments for students and staff. Only a few studies have focused on evaluating the structures, processes and outcomes of health promotion networks, important for measuring goal attainment as well as analysing reasons for success and failure. The importance of evaluation was discussed and suggestions were made on ways to expand and enhance this network into the future of Health Promoting Universities in Europe.

It also set out challenges and opportunities for progressing our vision of ecological, whole system health promoting and sustainable universities and colleges – and for maximizing their contribution to the health and wellbeing of our communities, our societies and our planet.

More than Cat Pictures: e-Counselling in the Post-Secondary Environment
This Deep Dive Session was held at the 2016 Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses Summit in Vancouver, BC. This working session initiated a conversation about e-counselling in a post-secondary context. Participants heard from counselling professionals with a range of comfort and experience, explored some of the barriers and successes in this realm, discussed concerns, and collaborated to develop more informed post-secondary e-counselling practices.
Bridging Stories-- Building Understanding
This Deep Dive Session was held during the 2016 Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses Summit in Vancouver, BC. Drawing on the tradition of practical philosophy, critical theory and hermeneutics, the workshop focused on practical dialogic tools and illustrate the intersection of theory and practice. In our multi-cultural campus communities and in light of the clash of ideas about alcohol and other drugs there is a real need to be able to hear each other in order to get beyond stereotypes and be able to develop broad understanding that celebrates diversity within our complex communities.

- 5. 5THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY Task Force Working Groups • Policy and Procedure Development: Develop a draft sexual assault policy and review other policies and procedures that address sexual assault and/or sexual harassment • Prevention Education: Assess and recommend enhancements to current sexual assault prevention education programming and work with other institutional partners to create new programming that reflects best practices • Reporting and Response: Develop and recommend clear reporting and response protocols • Communication: Recommend communication plans regarding the three items above
- 6. 6THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY Some general recommendations • A stand-alone policy on sexual violence at TRU • Hiring a sexual violence prevention and response officer • Better communicate support and response processes to students, faculty and staff • Continued strong partnerships with community agencies • Educational programming
