This document discusses key metrics for measuring the performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs). It covers financial structure, outreach indicators, and overall financial performance including revenue, expenses, efficiency, productivity, and risk/liquidity. Specific metrics discussed include common financial ratios calculated from the balance sheet and income statement of an example MFI called Nowhere Ltd. for the years 2007-2009. Participants are then assigned tasks to research performance metrics of an MFI in their case study country and consider the pros and cons of using the MIX Market database to find MFI data.
