A separating funnel is a piece of laboratory equipment used to separate two immiscible liquids. When a mixture is poured into the funnel, the liquid with the lower density will float to the top. The stopcock can then be opened to drain out the heavier liquid on the bottom into a container below. Once the heavier liquid is drained, the stopcock is closed before the lighter liquid begins to flow out. This separates the two liquids into separate containers based on their differing densities. Separating funnels are commonly used to separate mixtures of water and oil.

Then liquid with the lower density floats on top
and When the tap is opened, the liquid with
the higher density starts to flow through the
separating funnel into the container. Tap is
then closed just before the liquid with the
lower density starts to flow through. The liquid
with the lower density remaining in the
separating funnel can then be drained into a
different container to separate the two
immiscible liquids

4. SEPRATING TWO IMMISCIBLE
SUBSTANCE(WATER AND OIL)
• Pour the mixture of water and oil
in separating funnel
• Let it stand undisturbed for
sometime so that separating
layers of oil and water is formed

5. • Open the stopcock of the separating
funnel and pour out the lower layer of
water carefully
• close the stopcock of separating funnel as
the oil reaches the stop cock.
