About Tammy Bality
As an only child growing up on the Colorado farm her family originally homesteaded in
1875, Tammy Bality shared a special connection with animals: The horses, calves, dogs, cats,
and birds were her friends.
Ever since she could hold a crayon, art has been Tammy’s form of expression. Tammy now
creates sculptures that capture animals’ life force and honor their spirits.
Compelled to create
Tammy has always felt a bond with animals and aimed to recreate that feeling in art, but it
wasn’t until the 1988 Loveland Sculpture Show that she felt compelled to try her hand at
sculpting bronze.
Drawing on a variety of life experiences and technical workshops, Tammy developed her
own signature style utilizing different techniques and media to create unique pieces representing
our interconnectedness with animals.
Mixing media and melding heritages
People have always had a spiritual connection to animals through the millennia, whether it’s through Native American folklore
or Celtic mythology, and Tammy aims to honor that through her artwork.
Growing up in Colorado, Tammy loved the tributes to animals incorporating antlers, fur, feather and stone seen in Native
American artwork. These tributes lead the artist to delve into her own heritage, exploring Swedish, Irish and Scottish history
for inspiration and she was thrilled to discover that her Druid and Viking ancestors also had animal totems and tributes.
Tammy combines traditional influences with a variety of media and sculpting techniques to create innovative art that gives
voice to nature’s spirit.
She sculpts horses, dogs, birds of prey, bulls and bears from clay, bronze and crystal, incorporating silver and stone as well.
Tammy enjoys exploring the strengths of each medium – the freedom and spontaneity of ceramic, the strength and precision of
bronze, the luminosity and intrigue of crystal – and complementing their weaknesses with the strengths of the others.

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is an approach to linguistics developed by Michael Halliday that views language as a social semiotic system. In SFL, grammar is seen as a meaning-making resource that evolved to serve social functions. Halliday proposed that languages involve three metafunctions: using language to construe experience, enact social relations, and create coherent texts. SFL analyzes language from both a general semantic perspective as a system of options and a specific perspective as socially constructed texts.

An integrated approach to discover tag semantics

From the paper abstract: "Tag-based systems have become very common for online classification thanks to their intrinsic advantages such as self-organization and rapid evolution. However, they are still affected by some issues that limit their utility, mainly due to the inherent ambiguity in the semantics of tags. Synonyms, homonyms, and polysemous words, while not harmful for the casual user, strongly affect the quality of search results and the performances of tag-based recommendation
systems. In this paper we rely on the concept of tag relatedness in order to study small groups of similar tags and detect relationships between them. This approach is grounded on a model that builds upon an edge-colored multigraph of users, tags, and resources. To put our thoughts in practice, we present a modular and extensible framework of analysis for discovering synonyms, homonyms and hierarchical relationships amongst sets of tags. Some initial results of its application to the delicious database are presented, showing that such an approach could be useful to solve some of the well known problems of folksonomies.

Systemic in SFL refers to a conception of language as a network of systems, or choices, for expressing meaning.
Functional refers to a concern for what language does and how it does it, in contrast to more structural approaches.

Language is construed as a practical means of expressing meanings rather than as an abstract set of relations.
Scholars who influenced Halliday:
Firth gave the notion of language as a set of systems and the importance of context in the interpretation of meaning.
Malinowski, with his emphasis on the relation between language and context, that is, his idea that you need to be in the particular context to understand the meaning of an utterance, and his notion of multiplicities of languages according to situations.
Whorf, who also insisted on how language was influenced by environment.
Hjelmslev, and his notion of language as the level of expression of a higher-level semiotic system.
The functional approach of the Prague school of linguistics, especially with regard to the textual metafunction.
SFL views grammar and lexis (vocabulary) as working together in making meanings: this combination is referred to as lexicogrammar.
According to SFL, meanings are expressed according to three broad metafunctions:
The ideational metafunction is concerned with things (real or imagined) in the world.
It is to do with actions, events and states (referred to as processes), for example, run, occur, be; participants in those processes, for example, he, she, man, car, weather, and the circumstances in which those processes occur, that is, how, when, and where.
Two components of ideational metafunction:
1. the experiential component (to do with experience and understanding of
the world)
2. the logical component (to do with logical relations)
The interpersonal function has to do with relationships between participants, not only in spoken texts, but also in written texts (with regard to how the writer interacts with the reader).
The textual metafunction relates to the construction of text, how it is held together and what gives it texture. The textual function is an enabling function, because the two other functions ‘depend on being able to build up sequences of discourse, organizing the discursive flow, creating cohesion and continuity as it moves along’ (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004: 30).

Folksonomies: a bottom-up social categorization system
Folksonomies are a bottom-up social system for categorizing and sharing content created by users tagging resources with freely chosen keywords or tags. They have no controlled vocabulary or defined relationships between terms, instead allowing collaboration and adaptation through shared user-generated metadata. While lacking formal structure, folksonomies lower barriers to cooperation and foster serendipitous discovery, but can suffer from ambiguity due to synonyms, polysemy and other issues with vocabulary.
