Maslow's hierarchy of needs proposes that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other needs. The hierarchy consists of physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Maslow believed that people are motivated to achieve certain needs by working to fulfill the lower level needs first before progressing on to meet higher level needs. Self-actualization is at the top of the hierarchy and refers to fulfilling one's full potential and achieving a sense of purpose.
