This document provides information on specifying generator sets for telecommunication cell towers. It discusses the characteristics of cell tower loads, including the need for clean power and temperature control. Location factors that influence specification are also examined, such as climate conditions and local codes. Generator sets may be used for either standby or prime power applications. Typical cell tower loads range from 15 to 60 kW. Additional considerations include fuel type, generator enclosure, electrical loads, controls, remote monitoring, and applicable codes.
In just a few short years from now
the UK demand for electricity will be
uncomfortably close to the combined
generating power of both home and
imported power. There has been
significant investment in renewables
and wind in particular for the ‘green’
imperative and this has improved
where in 2017 a reported 52% of
demand was supplied from
renewable sources.
Some renewable sources are more
reliable than others and
furthermore, the gas and coal power
stations are being decommissioned to
align with emissions legislations from
Brussels, and any nuclear alternatives
will take years to come on line.
Consequently, there is an
understandable requirement for
embedded or distributed power
generation sources to secure supplies
and to export (Either partly, wholly,
or as part of a smart supply) to keep
the country running through all power
cycles. All of this means that relatively
small generators, diesel or gas;
reciprocating or turbine, are connected
to the grid and are increasing in their
percentage contribution.
The grid, as we know it now, is
fixed in volts and frequency and fairly
immovable. The grid of the future with
increasing wind power input and lighter
generators (say 30kW to 5mW) will
be less so and subjected to volts and
frequency excursions exceeding what
we see now.

Operation and Maintenance of Diesel Power Generating PlantsLiving Online
Diesel generating plants always have an important role in power plants as well as in industries and commercial installations to meet continuous and emergency standby power requirements for day to day use. A good knowledge of basic operation principles, layout requirements, associated components and maintenance practices for diesel power plants help the career development of many engineers and technicians in today’s world. Whatever your role in industry - designer, purchase engineer, installation contractor or maintenance engineer, a solid knowledge of diesel power plants is always useful. This workshop is designed to familiarise you with various aspects of diesel generating power plants for practical application.
Examples will be taken from various industrial standard practices regarding the construction, layouts, application and maintenance procedures followed for reliable and trouble free operation of diesel power plants. The various tests to be conducted during commissioning and maintenance checks to ensure proper and long term operation of diesel power plants will also be covered in the workshop.

UPS Electrical Design and Installation by Critical Power Supplies.
Important considerations for the electrical design and installation of UPS systems in mission critical applications.
Where Critical Power applications are concerned, the electrical design and installation of a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system is crucially important for several reasons.
Firstly, it must work in alignment with installations already on site and not interfere with other electrical
equipment. This is particularly important for industrial and healthcare installations where there may already
be critical equipment (medical and life support, for example) in operation.
It all starts with a site survey.
A pre-installation site survey will reveal details about the scope of the electrical work to be undertaken.
Such information will reveal, for instance, the type of electrical loads, power quality issues, harmonics, whether it is a
high, medium or low voltage installation and electrical distribution set up, including the breaker sizes already on site
and their discrimination.

Scenarios for Specifying an Uninterruptible Power Supply for Industrial Appli...Classic Controls, Inc.
For a number of years, some industries have used UPSs as a matter of course in applications requiring
uninterrupted process control. These include power-generation facilities, both fossil and nuclear, and petrochemical
plants and refineries.
Recently, other types of industrial companies (pulp and paper mills, steel mills, pharmaceutical manufacturing and
cogeneration facilities) have created a need for UPSs by incorporating DCSs into their plants to control their
processes. Additional control equipment, such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems,
energy management systems (EMSs), boiler-control and microprocessor-based instrumentation, give power
protection an even more important role in industry.

1.0 Introduction:
The Telecommunication’s market has revolutionized our ability to communicate, both in business and personally. Mobile devices are
becoming our preferred method of communicating with each other. Mobile devices rely on a network of cell towers that track the users
as they move from the transmission range of one tower to another. A telecommunication network relies on a network of cell towers.
Many tower sites are fitted with a standby, or prime power generator to ensure power during a utility outage.
This Information Sheet discusses the characteristics of Cell Tower loads, and how they influence the specification of a generator set
being used on a cell tower, in both a standby and primary power application: (Continued over)
