Seeing is Believing
While we can easily become engaged in a print news story that
is well-written and tailored for a specific audience, the ability
of television to “show us” the news is something that has given
it the edge over print news media for decades. Traditional radio
also provides us with the “storytelling” aspect where we may
find ourselves sitting in the car hanging on to every word of a
great news story. This week, you will write a broadcast script
for a television news story and for a radio news story. The
television script and the radio script will both be designed for
the delivery of a story that is 5 minutes in length.
Topic and Sources of Information: The issue that you choose to
write about must be current and have some relevance for your
local community, city, and/or state. You must derive the
information for this story from print media only. You will need
to read several print publications for mention of the story and
take notes of the facts of the story from several national
publications.
For this assignment you must:
· Adhere to the Broadcast Script Template
· Summarize facts and/or statistics that are relevant to the story
· Develop the story for the local audience
· Compare two opposing opinions about the topic
· Provide proper attribution for all sources of information
included (facts, statistics, images/video, and opinions).
· Incorporate at least three visual elements to enhance the
television story
· Incorporate at least three indirect quotes (citing other sources)
to enhance the radio story
· A list of each of the sources must be included using the Media
News Source Template
Saving Your Work: To maintain the formatting of your work,
you are strongly encouraged to save your assignment as a PDF
file. View Saving a Word Document as a PDF for steps on how
to do this.

I'm considering persuing several areas when I'm finished with
my degree. One in perticalure would definitely be Public
Relations Specialist. When I consider the 37 skills discussed in
this chapter, I chose curiosity, accuracy, and having good social
skills. I chose these three because, as a Journalist it's always
good to be in the know about what's going on, no one is going
to volunteer anything, so that's where your couriosity kicks in.
Being accurate is very important being in this type of business.
It's important to know exactly what you are talking about, all
while maintaining one's intergrity and privacy as well. As a
Journalist or reporter you don't want to be that journalist or
report who reports or write about something that isn't factual.
Having good social skills is also a big help when you are being
curious. It's important for people in the communities to know
they can trust you or even feel comfortable with sharing what
they know. To succeed today the newsman should be an applied
psychologist, resourceful researcher, and have an inquenchable
enthusiasm for his profession. ( Finberg 2014)
It would be very beneficial for every new graduate in the
journalism field, to come baring the total package when it
comes to the digital and media side of the business. Knowing as
much as possible about editing, writing, the digital and media
side of this business would be very beneficial to my career. We
as students becoming a Journalist we need to make sure we're
well educated on or multicultural world and other cultures in
hopes of providing more coverage for the communities.
According to Tom Clacy "Every person you meet and
everything you do in life is an oppertunity to learn
something.(Stovall, 2014, pg65) Core Skills for the Future of
Journalism argue that scholars and professionals do not
encourage the same values of what makes a journalist
successful, based upon new research from The Poynter Institute.
Poynter Institute claims that educators find culture to be
important at 76% while professional workers have marked
cultural knowledge at lower rates of 32%. Knowledge of
cultures can help give the author more details to discuss while
appealing to readers who like to read. (Finberg, 2014) Like any
professional group, journalist have always had to respond to
social and technological changes. Those who embrace change
best will have the greates chance of survival (Synge, 2010)

There are a few areas of journalism that I plan to focus on in
order to be successful in the field after college. An important
part of journalism includes writing in fluent style, where the
reader is gaining an impression on the writers’ philosophy of a
topic while enjoying a well-written news story. This skill is
important for sharing stories with illustrations to enhance the
message and maintain the readers’ attention, with captions,
advertisements and profile pictures. Dan Synge wrote The
Survival Guide to Journalism and includes a chapter on the
importance of writing a feature story that presents an balance of
interesting data and graphics, so that readers “actually read in
full what you have written”, (2010). A great way to share
perspectives and expand upon a topic is to learn about various
cultures.
Core Skills for the Future of Journalism argue that scholars and
professionals do not encourage the same values of what makes a
journalist successful, based upon new research from The
Poynter Institute. Poynter Institute claims that educators find
culture to be important at 76% while professional workers have
marked cultural knowledge at lower rates of 32%. Knowledge of
cultures can help give the author more details to discuss while
appealing to readers who like to read. Examples that include
quotes from social organizations create comparisons which can
bring together or separate details for stronger arguments,
(Finberg, 2014).
The ability to analyze and synthesize large amounts of data can
be a difficult challenge but supports the authors ability to share
information. Although core skills of journalism may differ from
professor to professional, analyzing stories for specific events
is an important part of storytelling. Information will appear in
forms of interviews, articles or letters and critical thinking
skills are needed to complete a story that is correct in substance
and up to date with current events, (Finberg, 14).
Fluent writing styles, cultural knowledge and analytical skills
are core values of journalism that promote a successful career
and appealing content, although the importance of each value is
argued between teachers and working graduates.

After reading over all these skills, no matter what type of
writing I do there will always be room for improvement. Three
skills that stuck out to me that I probably need some work on
are; handling criticism well, handling stress and deadlines and
searching online information at an advanced level.
How do these areas relate to becoming a good writer and editor?
I am not one to handle very well someone telling me they don’t
like something. This is a weakness of mine and causes lack of
confidence in my work. In order to prosper as a better writer
and editor I will need to learn to handle it better so that I may
improve my skills. Constructive criticism helps to build you to
be ae better writer. While constructive criticism helps so does
having deadlines. This would help you to work on the timing
portion of writing. One of my weak suites in the past journalism
classes was searching online information on an advanced level.
This helps you to be able to dig for your information deeper
than just the surface so that you can increase your skills as a
writer. “Journalists with the right skills are essential for
journalism — and for preserving journalism’s role within
society” (Finberg and Klinger, 2014).
How might these skills positively impact freedom of speech and
the ability of the journalist to remain objective and fair in
reporting?
These skills impact these because to be a good journalist you
must be able to express your opinion in a fair manner. There is
freedom of speech in journalism to a certain extend. You must
be able to express that opinion in a way that is not bias.
I feel that in order to be a good writer it is extremely important
to be able to handle the criticism. Not everyone is going to like
what you write. Some types of criticism is good for you to
increase your writing skills, especially when you are a beginner.
One needs to take that and improve.

Seeing is BelievingWhile we can easily become engaged in a print n.docx

  • 1. Seeing is Believing While we can easily become engaged in a print news story that is well-written and tailored for a specific audience, the ability of television to “show us” the news is something that has given it the edge over print news media for decades. Traditional radio also provides us with the “storytelling” aspect where we may find ourselves sitting in the car hanging on to every word of a great news story. This week, you will write a broadcast script for a television news story and for a radio news story. The television script and the radio script will both be designed for the delivery of a story that is 5 minutes in length. Topic and Sources of Information: The issue that you choose to write about must be current and have some relevance for your local community, city, and/or state. You must derive the information for this story from print media only. You will need to read several print publications for mention of the story and take notes of the facts of the story from several national publications. For this assignment you must: · Adhere to the Broadcast Script Template · Summarize facts and/or statistics that are relevant to the story · Develop the story for the local audience · Compare two opposing opinions about the topic · Provide proper attribution for all sources of information included (facts, statistics, images/video, and opinions). · Incorporate at least three visual elements to enhance the television story · Incorporate at least three indirect quotes (citing other sources) to enhance the radio story · A list of each of the sources must be included using the Media News Source Template Saving Your Work: To maintain the formatting of your work, you are strongly encouraged to save your assignment as a PDF file. View Saving a Word Document as a PDF for steps on how to do this.

One in perticalure would definitely be Public Relations Specialist. When I consider the 37 skills discussed in this chapter, I chose curiosity, accuracy, and having good social
  • 3. skills. I chose these three because, as a Journalist it's always good to be in the know about what's going on, no one is going to volunteer anything, so that's where your couriosity kicks in. Being accurate is very important being in this type of business. It's important to know exactly what you are talking about, all while maintaining one's intergrity and privacy as well. As a Journalist or reporter you don't want to be that journalist or report who reports or write about something that isn't factual. Having good social skills is also a big help when you are being curious. It's important for people in the communities to know they can trust you or even feel comfortable with sharing what they know. To succeed today the newsman should be an applied psychologist, resourceful researcher, and have an inquenchable enthusiasm for his profession. ( Finberg 2014) It would be very beneficial for every new graduate in the journalism field, to come baring the total package when it comes to the digital and media side of the business. Knowing as much as possible about editing, writing, the digital and media side of this business would be very beneficial to my career. We as students becoming a Journalist we need to make sure we're well educated on or multicultural world and other cultures in hopes of providing more coverage for the communities. According to Tom Clacy "Every person you meet and everything you do in life is an oppertunity to learn something.(Stovall, 2014, pg65) Core Skills for the Future of Journalism argue that scholars and professionals do not encourage the same values of what makes a journalist successful, based upon new research from The Poynter Institute. Poynter Institute claims that educators find culture to be important at 76% while professional workers have marked cultural knowledge at lower rates of 32%. Knowledge of cultures can help give the author more details to discuss while appealing to readers who like to read. (Finberg, 2014) Like any professional group, journalist have always had to respond to social and technological changes. Those who embrace change best will have the greates chance of survival (Synge, 2010)

Johann Exantus Aug 28, 2017Aug 28 at 5:24pm Manage Discussion Entry There are a few areas of journalism that I plan to focus on in order to be successful in the field after college. An important part of journalism includes writing in fluent style, where the reader is gaining an impression on the writers’ philosophy of a topic while enjoying a well-written news story. This skill is important for sharing stories with illustrations to enhance the message and maintain the readers’ attention, with captions, advertisements and profile pictures. Dan Synge wrote The Survival Guide to Journalism and includes a chapter on the importance of writing a feature story that presents an balance of interesting data and graphics, so that readers “actually read in full what you have written”, (2010). A great way to share perspectives and expand upon a topic is to learn about various cultures. Core Skills for the Future of Journalism argue that scholars and professionals do not encourage the same values of what makes a journalist successful, based upon new research from The Poynter Institute. Poynter Institute claims that educators find culture to be important at 76% while professional workers have marked cultural knowledge at lower rates of 32%. Knowledge of cultures can help give the author more details to discuss while appealing to readers who like to read. Examples that include quotes from social organizations create comparisons which can bring together or separate details for stronger arguments, (Finberg, 2014). The ability to analyze and synthesize large amounts of data can

Although core skills of journalism may differ from professor to professional, analyzing stories for specific events is an important part of storytelling. Information will appear in forms of interviews, articles or letters and critical thinking skills are needed to complete a story that is correct in substance and up to date with current events, (Finberg, 14). Fluent writing styles, cultural knowledge and analytical skills are core values of journalism that promote a successful career and appealing content, although the importance of each value is argued between teachers and working graduates. Three skills that stuck out to me that I probably need some work on are; handling criticism well, handling stress and deadlines and searching online information at an advanced level. How do these areas relate to becoming a good writer and editor? I am not one to handle very well someone telling me they don’t like something. This is a weakness of mine and causes lack of confidence in my work. In order to prosper as a better writer and editor I will need to learn to handle it better so that I may
  • 7. improve my skills. Constructive criticism helps to build you to be ae better writer. While constructive criticism helps so does having deadlines. This would help you to work on the timing portion of writing. One of my weak suites in the past journalism classes was searching online information on an advanced level. This helps you to be able to dig for your information deeper than just the surface so that you can increase your skills as a writer. “Journalists with the right skills are essential for journalism — and for preserving journalism’s role within society” (Finberg and Klinger, 2014). How might these skills positively impact freedom of speech and the ability of the journalist to remain objective and fair in reporting? These skills impact these because to be a good journalist you must be able to express your opinion in a fair manner. There is freedom of speech in journalism to a certain extend. You must be able to express that opinion in a way that is not bias. I feel that in order to be a good writer it is extremely important to be able to handle the criticism. Not everyone is going to like what you write. Some types of criticism is good for you to increase your writing skills, especially when you are a beginner. One needs to take that and improve.
