The Research Presentation begins with a research question and a bibliographic search. You should identify 2 to 4 studies that address the same research question. Please send your References to me with citations written in APA style --see APA Manual of Style, 6th ed. -- no later than the date listed in the Calendar. I will use your Research Question to peruse the titles to make sure they look like original reports of empirical studies that are all on the same research question, and I will do an APA check on one of your citations. No grade will be taken; however, part of your presentation grade depends on using appropriate articles and writing your References page in APA style. If you are in doubt about whether a study is an "original report of an empirical study," feel free to attach it to the Citations and RQ email. Please start early on this assignment and plan to spend several hours searching for the right kind of articles that are all on the same research question. You will choose a topic from the Complete Marriage and Family Home Reference Guide to study more closely. In 4–6 pages, you will compare current knowledge with facts from research and then examine the chosen topic from both a psychological and a theological perspective.
1. Briefly provide your initial thoughts on the topic. This section will not require source material. The purpose is simply for you to identify what you know about this topic. You may discuss facts, a biblical perspective, the moral dilemma involved in the topic, or just your thoughts around the topic. This section must be 1 page.
2. Look at the research that has been done on the topic. This section must be well-organized with headings and subheadings and must include at least 4 empirical sources. This section must be 2–3 pages. You may consider, but are not confined to, the following prompts and questions:
· Check some of what you know against what research has to say. How could this topic affect a marriage or family?
· What are benefits and consequences of approaching this topic and working through it within the affected family unit?
3. Compare the psychological and theological perspectives of the topic. The point here is to compare what the research says about the topic to what the Bible says about the topic. Not all of the topics from "The Quick-Reference Guide to Marriage and Family Counseling" are directly mentioned in the Bible. However, you may use biblical principles and discuss similarities and discrepancies found between these 2 perspectives. This section must be 1–2 pages.
4. The conclusion of this paper must include a good summary of the information provided in the preceding 3 sections. You must also provide an idea for future study of the topic. What further information could be provided in relation to this topic? For example, what are some variables that play a part of depression in marriage? Is depression within marriage easier to work through if the depression is a result of a mood disorder or of circumstances outside of the marriage?
5. Correct current APA formatting must be implemented throughout this paper, including avoiding first person and using properly formatted citations and headings. This article proposes an extension to the McCumber
Cube information security model to determine the best
countermeasures to achieve a desired security goal.
Confidentiality, integrity, and availability are the se-curity services of a system. In other words they are the security goals of system defense, intangible at-
tributes� providing assurances for the information protected.
Each service is realized when the appropriate countermea-
sures for a given information state are in place. But, it is not
enough to select countermeasures ad hoc. Countermeasures
should be selected to defend a system and its information
against specific types of attacks. When attacks against partic-
ular information states are considered, the necessary coun-
termeasures can be selected to achieve the desired security
service or goal. This article proposes an extension to the Mc-
Cumber Cube information security model as a way for the
security practitioner to consider the best countermeasures to
achieve the desired security goal.
Security models
Models are useful tools to help understand complex topics. A
well-developed model can often be represented graphically,
allowing a deeper understanding of the relationships of the
components that make the whole. A formal security model
is broadly applicable and rigorously developed using formal
methods.2 In contrast, an informal model is considered lack-
ing one or both of these qualities. There are a variety of in-
formal models in the information security world which are
regularly used by security practitioners to understand basic
information and concepts.
� Security goals often lack explicit definitions and are difficult to quantify. They are
usually based on policies with broad interpretations and tend to be qualitative. It is
true that security goals emerge from the confluence of information states and coun-
termeasures which have measurable attributes. But, the subjective nature of security
goals combined with informal modeling characterizes their attributes as intangible.

One such informal model is the generally accepted risk as-
sessment framework. This model is used to assess risk by
estimating asset values, vulnerabilities, threats with their
likelihood of exploiting a vulnerability, and losses. Figure �

the risk assessment participants. This is problematic when

The Research Presentation begins with a research question and a bibliographic search. You should identify 2 to 4 studies that address the same research question. Please send your References to me with citations written in APA style --see APA Manual of Style, 6th ed. -- no later than the date listed in the Calendar. I will use your Research Question to peruse the titles to make sure they look like original reports of empirical studies that are all on the same research question, and I will do an APA check on one of your citations. No grade will be taken; however, part of your presentation grade depends on using appropriate articles and writing your References page in APA style. If you are in doubt about whether a study is an "original report of an empirical study," feel free to attach it to the Citations and RQ email. Please start early on this assignment and plan to spend several hours searching for the right kind of articles that are all on the same research question. If you need assistance with APA style, please consult the Kail and Cavanaugh text References for many examples of APA-style reference citations.

Extending the McCumber Cube
to Model Network Defense

This article proposes an extension to the McCumber
Cube information security model to determine the best
countermeasures to achieve a desired security goal.
Confidentiality, integrity, and availability are the se-curity services of a system. In other words they are the security goals of system defense, intangible at-
tributes� providing assurances for the information protected.
Each service is realized when the appropriate countermea-
sures for a given information state are in place. But, it is not
enough to select countermeasures ad hoc. Countermeasures
should be selected to defend a system and its information
against specific types of attacks. When attacks against partic-
ular information states are considered, the necessary coun-
termeasures can be selected to achieve the desired security
service or goal. This article proposes an extension to the Mc-
Cumber Cube information security model as a way for the
security practitioner to consider the best countermeasures to
achieve the desired security goal.
Security models
Models are useful tools to help understand complex topics. A
well-developed model can often be represented graphically,
allowing a deeper understanding of the relationships of the
components that make the whole. A formal security model
is broadly applicable and rigorously developed using formal
methods.2 In contrast, an informal model is considered lack-
ing one or both of these qualities. There are a variety of in-
formal models in the information security world which are
regularly used by security practitioners to understand basic
information and concepts.
� Security goals often lack explicit definitions and are difficult to quantify. They are
usually based on policies with broad interpretations and tend to be qualitative. It is
true that security goals emerge from the confluence of information states and coun-
termeasures which have measurable attributes. But, the subjective nature of security
goals combined with informal modeling characterizes their attributes as intangible.

One such informal model is the generally accepted risk as-
sessment framework. This model is used to assess risk by
estimating asset values, vulnerabilities, threats with their
likelihood of exploiting a vulnerability, and losses. Figure �
illustrates this model. Note that this commonly used model
requires a substantial amount of estimating on the part of
the risk assessment participants. This is problematic when
reliable estimates cannot be obtained. Another problem with

tain types of hazards,” Shearman said.
Beyond life safety risks, certain tenants might be more susceptible than
previous tenants to codes and regulations imposed by state or federal laws,
such as licensing regulations for daycares or American Disabilities Act re-
quirements for medical tenants, said Pat Pollan, CPM, principal at Pollan
Hausman Real Estate Services in Houston.
New-use tenant risks don’t stop there: financial risks also exist. Replac-
ing a unique tenant with a similar occupant after the lease expires can be
difficult—a particular concern if a lot of money was spent customizing the
space for an alternative use.

The Rise of the Republican Party
The Republican Party was formed due to a split in the Whig Party. The anti-slavery
“Conscience Whigs” split from the pro-slavery “Cotton Whigs”. Some anti-slavery Whigs joined
the American “Know-Nothing” Party, while the remainder joined with independent Democrats
and Free-Soilers to form a new party, the Republicans. The initial members stood for one
principle: the exclusion of slavery from the western territories (Shi, p. 462). Knowing the
Republicans ideology, we will look at how the events leading up to the Kansas-Nebraska Act led
to greater political division that eventually caused the formation of the Republican Party and it’s
rise to the presidency in 1860.
In the 1850’s, America was becoming increasingly divided between those for and against
slavery. The Compromise of 1850 had temporarily appeased both sides by admitting California
as a free state, allowing no slavery restrictions in New Mexico and Utah, paying Texas,
abolishing slave trade but no slavery in the District of Columbia, establishing the Fugitive Slave
Act, and denying congress authority to interfere with interstate slave trade (Shi, p. 457). This
Fugitive Slave Act was highly contested, although very few slaves were returned to the south
under this Act. In fact, it ended up uniting anti-slavery people, more than aiding the South. It was
during this time that Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written, selling more than a million copies
worldwide and detailing the harsh brutality of slavery (Shi, p. 460-461).
In the mid-1850’s, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed. The main reason for it was to the
settle the vast territory west of Missouri and Iowa, and to create a transcontinental railroad to
capitalize on Asian markets and goods. New territories brought up questions of whether slavery
would be allowed, with many supporting “popular sovereignty” where voters chose whether they
would have slavery or not. The issue here was that the 1820 Missouri Compromise had said there
would be no new slaver.

The narrative is somewhat unbalanced due to the short Prologue and thus can be considered to be possibly deceptive on its face. It is not unbalanced enough to say this conclusively.

30 words – Deceptive on its face. There is no mention of the passenger in this sentence. All of the pronouns are singular. It is “my car” “on my way”, etc. When the passenger is mentioned later, it is almost an afterthought. The deception in this sentence may be the last part of the sentence where he relates why he was driving the car. He very well may have been driving for some reason other than to get the ferry. This would be an area to be further explored in an interview.

I was unfamiliar with the road and turned right onto Dike Road, instead of bearing hard left on Main Street.
20 words. “I was unfamiliar with the road” is an explanatory phrase telling us why he ended up on Dike Road. The phrase “instead of bearing hard left on Main Street” is a strange way of phrasing. Most people would say something like “instead of staying on Main Street.”

After proceeding for approximately one-half mile on Dike Road I descended a hill and came upon a narrow bridge.
20 words. There is nothing particularly deceptive about this sentence. The phrasing of the sentence is very formal. The phrasing is almost like a police type report or a legal/lawyer way of phrasing. It also appears that the phrase “came upon a narrow bridge” is almost a passive way of phrasing that indicates he was taken by surprise and had no control over what he was doing.

to answer in an argument your main research
question for the semester. Also consider why your
audience should care about the group/factor you
focused on and what is the impact of your
findings on the group itself, students, colleges, and
possibly communities? You may also end up
discussing some of the implications for the future.
Conclusion
Why it is worth studying? Why is it important to
study? Overall opposition/what different sides will
say? Return to your thesis or research question and
consider what you think you’ll discover and
why.
Your annotated bibliography will then follow on a
new page but will be submitted in the same file as
the
prospectus.
10. ESSAYS 2-3, OVERALL REQUIREMENTS
● Each essay must make a well-supported argument
with well-integrated sources and be
based on the assigned prompts below. To get a
passing grade: you must support an
arguable thesis based on your own thoughts about
your topic and the sources you have
read and the research you have conducted; each must
also be a 1,000-1,300 words, have 5-6
sources minimum (see the individual requirements for
each essay) that are cited in the style
required for each essay. See the syllabus about the
other requirements as far as rough
draft, final draft, and revision submissions.
● Sources must be well-integrated in the text of the
essay with the use of direct quotation,
summary, and paraphrase as well as in-text citations.
A Works Cited must be included, and
though it is the last page of your essay it does
not count as part of the word requirement!
● You will upload your drafts on Moodle.
● You will be asked to identify the portions of the
sources you used and submit hard copies of
your sources in a folder or files of your sources
online.
● Be sure to review the rubrics and checklist in
The Composition and Rhetoric Guide as you
draft and revise!
11. ESSAY 2: ARGUMENT/1,000 WORDS/6 INTEGRATED
SOURCES/MLA/WORKS CITED
(tentative due date 3/16)
Option 1: Argue a significant change in the group
or factor related to happiness.
Option 2: You’ll do your own study on your
topic, and then in an essay modeled off a scholarly
research article, you will report what previous
scholars have said, how you conducted your study,
your findings from your own field research, and your
conclusions based on your research.
Things to consider if you are writing about change:
Have things always been this way? If not, what
sparked a change? What caused the problem/issue to
begin or become significant? What kind of impact
did the significant change have on members of your
selected group or on the impression of the factor
you are focused on? How do current college students
reflect/or not reflect this change?
If you are going to conduct your own study,
you’ll figure out the best way to try to collect
information
about the group or factor, how you’ll conduct your
study, how you plan to collect information from the
subjects you are studying. You’ll also consider what
12. other researchers have found as you figure this all
out. Finally, you’ll make some conclusions about your
findings.
Required minimum source guidelines:
● at least 1 scholarly secondary source from an
academic journal
● at least 1 secondary nonfiction book source (does
not need to be scholarly)
● at least 1 field research primary source that you
conducted yourself.
● at least 1 primary nonfiction source or at least 1
creative media primary
source (try to have both of these because you’ll be
more likely to meet the
final essay 4 required sources)
● a reliable source of any type (student’s choice) that
is appropriate for an
academic audience and purpose

For the third research essay, you will make a formal
argument regarding a controversial issue within
your topic having to do with the group or factor
you have been studying this semester. This will be
an
13. academic essay, but if you wish you could gear
your argument to your particular group or college
students in general. So for instance, if you are
studying how parents affect college student happiness,
you might choose to write to an audience of college
students to convince them of something about their
parents OR you might write to an audience of
parents to try to convince them of something about
their
college students. If you don’t want to aim toward a
specific audience, you’ll be writing to a general
audience.
Required minimum source guidelines:
Three scholarly secondary sources
Two primary
ESSAY 4: ARGUMENT/2,000 WORDS/MUST BE
SUBMITTED TO MOODLE/10
SOURCES/WORKS CITED
(tentative due date 4/24)
All of the same submission standards for Essays 2-3
listed above apply to this essay except the word
count and number of sources: 2000 words and a
minimum of 10 sources as listed below.
This essay is the culmination of all your work this
semester. Based on what you have learned this
semester, you will argue the role of happiness in
your group or how it relates to the factor you’ve
chosen. Can happiness factor into student success?
What is student success: social? academic?
14. self-confidence? resiliency? a good job? a proud
family? Should students expect to be happy most of
the
time in college? Alternatively, do students understand
that hard work and tough choices may lead to
greater happiness later? Should colleges (including
students) do more to promote happiness and
well-being? Should students care more about their own
foundational happiness? What are the
implications for the future? What needs to be studied
more?
You will be using parts of your other essays to
complete this one, BUT this should feel like a new
essay
and not just a copy and paste job! You most likely
have to do some new research to support your
thesis.
Required minimum source guidelines:
Seven scholarly (at least three academic journals)
Three primary (at least one creative source)

doesn’t go well & revising Essays 2, & 3 for a
new grade
and the required procedure and last day of
submission for doing this. If you are unhappy with
your
grade, you should come to see me immediately and
use the writing center to get help. There is a
portfolio review option as well if you have made
15. improvements over the semester—see the explanation
in the Composition and Rhetoric Guide . Please ask
for help if you are feeling stuck!
REFLECTION PORTION OF YOUR ESSAY GRADE
You will be asked to submit a rough draft with a
detailed description of what you think is working
and not working and why. Failure to reflect in
depth will lower your essay grade and I will not
give
feedback on any essay that does not include this
detailed reflection. This draft and your reflections on
it
may count toward your overall grade on that essay.
When you finish a final draft of essays 2, 3, and
4, on the next class day, you will submit a
reflection
that’s at least three paragraphs that contain the
following:
♥ Paragraph 1: You will reflect on what’s working
and not working on the essay and WHY this is
and assign a letter grade to your essay that you
believe would be fair based on the final product
(not necessarily the effort you put into it)—you can
use the self-analysis rubric to guide you.
♥ Paragraph 2: You’ll discuss the decisions you made
during the writing of the essay, both on the
page and in how you allotted time and effort. So
you might discuss why you tried an informal
but catchy introduction and your decision to have a
two-paragraph conclusion with sources cited
in it, and then discuss that you really thought a lot
16. about writing the essay for the whole week but
when it came down to it you started to work on
the final draft at 9PM before it was due and you
ran out of time and energy.
♥ Paragraph 3: You’ll reflect on what you are
learning about writing and yourself as a writer.
Please be extra careful to follow my submission
instructions for drafts and final drafts.
