REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS
SEED DISPERSAL
CLASS-VII- CBSE
Seed is an important part of a flowering plant. They give rise to a
new plant. They may be of different shapes, colours and sizes. They
may be round, wrinkled, winged or hairy. They are in a dormant
condition until they receive adequate sunlight, water, and soil.
What is germination?
The growth of a seed into a young plant or a seedling is called
germination.
A seed has three parts: Seed Coat, Endosperm, Embryo
A seed coat protects the internal parts of a seed. The seed coat has
two layers. The outer layer is thick and known as the testa. The inner
layer is thin and known a Stegmen.
A thick seed coat protects the seed from sunlight and water. It
prevents the loss of water and entry of parasites within the seeds.
The hard seed coats prevent germination during unfavorable
environmental conditions.
An opening in the integument of the ovule is known as the micropyle
and is visible on some seed coats. The hilum is also visible which is
equivalent to the naval in humans where the umbilical cord is
attached.
Endosperm
The endosperm contains the nutrients stored in it. It provides
nutrients to the seed in the form of starch, carbohydrates and
proteins to support the embryo during germination. It is located
below the seed coat. The seeds remain viable with the intake of
nutrients until germination.
Embryo
The embryo is the most important part of a seed. It is diploid,
developed from the fertilized egg. All the cells that need to develop
into a mature embryo are present within the embryo. An embryo
comprises the following parts: Epicotyl, Hypocotyl, Radicle,
Cotyledons
Epicotyl is a small shoot which gives rise to the entire plant shoot
system. The primary root emerges first during germination. It is also
known as hypocotyl. It anchors the plant firmly in the soil. Radicle is
a small embryonic root. The cotyledons provide nourishment to
different parts of the embryo.
It emerges as a tiny or fleshy leaf from the soil with the seedling
during growth. It stores food in the form of starch and protein. The
embryonic leaves are the first to appear above the ground. An
embryo develops from a fertilized egg.
Such five changes or steps occurring during seed germination are:
(1) Imbibition (2) Respiration (3) Effect of Light on Seed
Germination(4) Mobilization of Reserves during Seed Germination
and Role of Growth Regulators and (5) Development of Embryo
Axis into Seedling.
The three stages in-between are when the primary root, which is
called the radicle, develops root hairs, the first young shoot rises
emerges from the soil and the first pair of true leaves form to begin
to manufacture food for the plant.
Successful germination depend on several factors occurring in
harmony with one another. The seed must first be viable, or alive,
and in most cases, it must have undergone a period of cold
temperatures. This process is called stratification.
When the right combination of water and warmth is present, the
seed coat ruptures, allowing the radicle to emerge. This initial root
also serves to anchor the seedling to the soil so that small amounts of
water and wind pose less of a threat to its survival.
After the radicle develops small root hairs that begin to take
nutrients from the soil, the first shoot, called the plumule, emerges
from the soil. The plumule will contain two cotyledons, which are not
true leaves but rather photosynthetic material that is actually
formed during the embryonic period.
Cotyledons are larger than true leaves and serve to photosynthesize
as much energy as possible for the growing plant. When the
cotyledons begin to grow smaller and turn yellow, the first true
leaves begin to emerge from the plumule.
Soon after the true leaves emerge, the cotyledons will shrivel up and
fall from the plant. Germination is complete when the new leaves
begin to photosynthesize energy from the sun to promote the plant's
growth. The leaves continue to grow towards the light source in a
process called photomorphogenesis.

Seed Germination and Plant Growth Explained

  • 1. NANDITHA AKUNURI REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS SEED DISPERSAL CLASS-VII- CBSE
  • 2. Seed is an important part of a flowering plant. They give rise to a new plant. They may be of different shapes, colours and sizes. They may be round, wrinkled, winged or hairy. They are in a dormant condition until they receive adequate sunlight, water, and soil.
  • 3. What is germination? The growth of a seed into a young plant or a seedling is called germination.
  • 4. A seed has three parts: Seed Coat, Endosperm, Embryo A seed coat protects the internal parts of a seed. The seed coat has two layers. The outer layer is thick and known as the testa. The inner layer is thin and known a Stegmen.
  • 5. A thick seed coat protects the seed from sunlight and water. It prevents the loss of water and entry of parasites within the seeds. The hard seed coats prevent germination during unfavorable environmental conditions.
  • 6. An opening in the integument of the ovule is known as the micropyle and is visible on some seed coats. The hilum is also visible which is equivalent to the naval in humans where the umbilical cord is attached.
  • 7. Endosperm The endosperm contains the nutrients stored in it. It provides nutrients to the seed in the form of starch, carbohydrates and proteins to support the embryo during germination. It is located below the seed coat. The seeds remain viable with the intake of nutrients until germination.
  • 8. Embryo The embryo is the most important part of a seed. It is diploid, developed from the fertilized egg. All the cells that need to develop into a mature embryo are present within the embryo. An embryo comprises the following parts: Epicotyl, Hypocotyl, Radicle, Cotyledons
  • 9. Epicotyl is a small shoot which gives rise to the entire plant shoot system. The primary root emerges first during germination. It is also known as hypocotyl. It anchors the plant firmly in the soil. Radicle is a small embryonic root. The cotyledons provide nourishment to different parts of the embryo.
  • 10. It emerges as a tiny or fleshy leaf from the soil with the seedling during growth. It stores food in the form of starch and protein. The embryonic leaves are the first to appear above the ground. An embryo develops from a fertilized egg.
  • 11. Such five changes or steps occurring during seed germination are: (1) Imbibition (2) Respiration (3) Effect of Light on Seed Germination(4) Mobilization of Reserves during Seed Germination and Role of Growth Regulators and (5) Development of Embryo Axis into Seedling.
  • 12. The three stages in-between are when the primary root, which is called the radicle, develops root hairs, the first young shoot rises emerges from the soil and the first pair of true leaves form to begin to manufacture food for the plant.
  • 13. Successful germination depend on several factors occurring in harmony with one another. The seed must first be viable, or alive, and in most cases, it must have undergone a period of cold temperatures. This process is called stratification.
  • 14. When the right combination of water and warmth is present, the seed coat ruptures, allowing the radicle to emerge. This initial root also serves to anchor the seedling to the soil so that small amounts of water and wind pose less of a threat to its survival.
  • 15. After the radicle develops small root hairs that begin to take nutrients from the soil, the first shoot, called the plumule, emerges from the soil. The plumule will contain two cotyledons, which are not true leaves but rather photosynthetic material that is actually formed during the embryonic period.
  • 16. Cotyledons are larger than true leaves and serve to photosynthesize as much energy as possible for the growing plant. When the cotyledons begin to grow smaller and turn yellow, the first true leaves begin to emerge from the plumule.
  • 17. Soon after the true leaves emerge, the cotyledons will shrivel up and fall from the plant. Germination is complete when the new leaves begin to photosynthesize energy from the sun to promote the plant's growth. The leaves continue to grow towards the light source in a process called photomorphogenesis.
