Making Story Apps - The Art of Little Red Riding Hood
In March 2013 I gave a short talk about how we make story apps at Nosy Crow. This really focused on the illustration and how we bring it to life with Maya. The original presentation didn't have any text as I was there to talk about it all. To make up for my absence here, I've added comments all the way through, so hopefully it makes sense and helps explain how we go about things.
Environment.

Mood board
John McDermott is designing set pieces for a dance performance about sex trafficking. He will use softwood for the fences as it is cheap, easy to work with, and structurally sound. Chicken wire will replace barbed wire for safety reasons and to achieve a metallic look. The fences are meant to look harsh and dangerous to portray feelings of imprisonment. Painting the softwood frames grey, brown, or using metallic spray will give them a rusty, run-down metal appearance at low cost. Initial sketches show gated fences with strip LED lighting underneath to enhance the unnatural, imprisoning atmosphere portrayed in the dance.

In ancient Egypt, masks were worn to transform the wearer during rituals and also as a disguise for executioners. In Africa, masks were commonly used in tribal rituals to communicate with ancestors and spirits, and were sometimes worn into battle to intimidate enemies. Masks were also widely used in ancient Greek and medieval European theatre to distinguish characters and portray different roles, ages, and occupations due to limited actors. By the 18th century, mask wearing was more restricted and typically associated with festivals and events around the winter holidays.
