This paper aimed at: (1) describing the content of Functional English Design (FED) materials and (2) describing the appropriateness of the FEDas the English training materials for the migrant workers' candidates (MWC). This study used ADDIE (Analysing, Designing, Developing, Implementing and Evaluating) model involving totally 200 MWC in the 4 PPTKIS (namely authorized private boards in which duties serves the Indonesian workers' placement and protection abroad).The data were taken from the documentation, the trainees’ English training achievements using the FED and peer-debriefing. The gathered data was analyzed using: Content Analysis and Mean-difference computation of the trainees' test results descriptively. This study found: (1) the content of the FEDthatdeveloped“Imparting and seeking factual information” with “Minimum–adequate language Functions” was matched with the trainees needs and (2) the FED was appropriate to use as an alternative English materials since it was designed based on the result of needs analysis beside the test result in significant improvement i.e. the Mean Difference of the oral pre and post-test was 2.25 within the scoring standard scale of 0-10, while the Md of the written pre-post-test was 13.35 within the scoring standard scale of 0-100. Besides, the peers debriefing stated that the FED was recommended for use in the 4 investigated PPTKIS.

In the present study, the writing assignments of university students as well as intermediate English learners were analyzed for the purpose of error analysis. Results of the analysis suggest that students lack grammatical accuracy in their writing and are not sure of the grammatical rules that may apply in their writing in English. The aim of this paper is to investigate errors made by second and foreign language (L2) learners so as to understand the strategies and techniques used in the process of second and foreign language learning. Error analysis is a very important area of applied linguistics as well as of second and foreign language learning. It is also a systematic method to analyze learners' errors. Errors are not always bad, rather they are crucial parts and aspects in the process of learning a language. They may provide insights into the complicated processes of language development as well as a systematic way for identifying, describing and explaining students' errors. Errors may also help to better understand the process of second and foreign language acquisition. This study tries to investigate why Pakistani ESL and Iranian EFL learners fail to produce grammatically correct sentences in English, in spite of having English as a compulsory subject at all levels in their learning institutions and schools. What are the reasons for their poor English written performance? In the present study, the writing assignments of university students as well as intermediate English learners were analyzed for the purpose of error analysis. Results of the analysis suggest that students lack grammatical accuracy in their writing and are not sure of the grammatical rules that may apply in their writing in English. The study concludes that they are highly influenced by the rules of their first language (L1).

When learners take control of their own learning, the phenomenon helps increase meaningful engagement in the language while reducing a need for tight reigns of control by the advisor. However, what about the learners’ language improvement? Will there be language proficiency gains along with increased learner autonomy? This one year study in progress is made possible by a grant provided by The Japanese Ministry of Education and Technology (MEXT) that attempts to clarify how 20 students at Saitama University’s English Language Center (ERC) learn and improve in English autonomously with collaborative support from peers and the advisor. Subsequently, the pre and post test scores of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will be correlated with an illuminative evaluation revealing data about how, when, and what the students do to learn English. In addition, how they choose to involve their peers and advisor in their study plans will be explained.

The sheer inevitability and momentum of global adoption of all forms of technology has engendered a range of responses from wholehearted welcome and exploitation, to denial and anger . Consequently, the education landscape has been shifting, although not in the colossal, earth-rending manner that was initially envisaged. Information, Communication Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching (ICTELT) has progressively continued to evolve and mature, embedded in an increasing foundation of research. One key benefit identified in this process is the inclusiveness and fluidity that can be built into ICTELT experiences, especially when they occur within a collaborative community. This paper explores an example of how ICT was used to adapt part of an existing ‘problematic’ curriculum in a way that helped address central issues, encouraged collective learning and enabled learners. In the Foundations programme at Dubai Men’s College (DMC) students find the conventions of academic writing, and the requirement to improve their proficiency, challenging, especially as they are also struggling with the transition from secondary to tertiary education, and their own changing identities. The framework of existing Communities of Learning (CoL) was employed to introduce a blended, scaffolded approach that aimed to assist students with academic writing, as well as assisting their transition to more self-directed, confident learning. The design and implementation of the interventions is described, and a brief overview of the results of the associated research study is given, along with recommendations for educators wishing to adopt a similar approach.

Brokering practices among EAL international students
Academic challenges of international students, particularly those with English as an additional language (EAL), have been mostly researched in the classroom context, with little attention paid to students’ informal learning practices. My research looks specifically at the brokering practices of EAL tertiary students in their understanding of academic literacy. Brokering refers to how students seek help from their peers about understanding academic knowledge and skills. I conducted semi-structured interviews and observations to find out who students approached for help, aspects of academic literacy they needed help with, and their perceptions of the experience. The research findings suggest that educators need to pay attention to how students seek peer support in academic learning in order to develop more effective ways of supporting students’ academic literacy needs.

Translanguaging in self-access language advising: Informing language policy

This presentation investigates talk between language advisors and students in a university self access learning center in Japan and how it informs language policy in the center. Its initial ‘English-only’ language policy has shifted to one in which “translanguaging” (Creese & Blackledge, 2010, p. 105) between Japanese and English now predominates in advisory sessions. Qualitative data from advisory sessions, mentor interviews and student questionnaires reveal that translanguaging encourages “local, pragmatic coping tactics” (Lin, 2005, p. 46) and that the mentors’ strategic code-switching presents them as plurilingual “near peer role models” (Murphey, 1996) among students. Despite these positive findings, data also reveals that some students want mentors to enforce monolingual language rules, and others may feel “guilt” (Setati et al, 2002, p.147) when using Japanese. Conclusions imply that the translanguaging of self-access center advisory sessions is helping to create a valid alternative to the ‘English only’ policy commonly seen in classrooms.
