The understanding that personal learning environments provide a more realistic and workable perspective of learners’ interactions with and use of technology has gained widespread acceptance across many of the communities interested in learning and teaching technologies within higher education.
However in universities the service which normally purchases and deploys technology infrastructure is typically, and understandable, risk-averse, the more so, because the consequences of expensive decisions about infrastructure will stay with the organisations for many years. Furthermore across the broader academic community the awareness of and familiarity with technologies in support of learning may be varied. In this context work to innovate the learning environment will require considerable team effort and collective commitment.
This paper presents a case study account of institutional processes harnessed to establish a universal personal learning environment fit for the 21st century. The challenges encountered were consequential of our working definition of a learning environment which went beyond simple implementation – in our experience the requirements became summarised as ‘its more than a system, it’s a mindset’. As well as deploying technology ‘fit for purpose’ we were seeking to create an environment which could play an integral and catalytic part in the university’s role of enabling transformative education.
Our ambitions and aspirations derive from evidence in the literature, for example, van Harmelen on personal learning environments (2006), Downes on e-learning 2.0 (2005) and the recent report by Bradwell for Demos on the Edgeless University (2009).
We have also drawn on evidence of our recent and current performance; gauged by institutional benchmarking and an extensive student survey. The paper will present and analyse this qualitative and quantitative data. We will provide an account and analysis of our progress to achieve change, the methods we used, problems encountered and the decisions we made on the way.
Dr Su White is based in the Learning Societies Lab, in Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. Su’s research interests include the impact of emerging technologies on Higher Education. Su is a part of the curriculum innovation project Southampton Learning Environment team and a member of the university’s TEL-SIG.

Methodological Implications of Using Google Applications (Google Sites and Go...
In computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA), disrupted turn adjacency has been cited as highly problematic because messages get posted in the order received by the system, regardless of what they are responding to. Multiple posts can respond to one initiating message, and single messages can respond to more than one initiating message (Herring, 1999). Hybrid web tools (e.g., wikis) for social interaction have posed additional challenges to CMDA because authors can go back and manipulate previous content or messages at any point.
This paper identifies problems encountered in analyzing two case studies using Google Sites (a wiki) and Google Wave (a synchronous communication/collaboration tool) in language teacher education. In the first study (2009), four cross-institutional groups of student teachers in the U.S. and Luxembourg, communicated via Google Sites to design ESL/EFL tasks. In the second study (2010), participants at the same US institution used Google Wave to collaborate with students in Taiwan. The goal for both collaborations was for participants to share perspectives about technology implementation in teaching and learning while using technology to work across institutions (model learning, see Hubbard & Levy, 2006; Willis, 2001). Data triangulation involved CMC transcripts, journals, needs analyses, and post-course questionnaires.
Findings show that using wikis as a collaborative, asynchronous writing tool, posed difficulties for all groups. They used the wiki to post meta-level comments about their editing process within the actual project page, while others used the wiki as a discussion forum or blog. Not only does this have implications for learner training in the functional uses of technology tools, the findings also raise important issues for interaction management (Herring, 1999). Google Wave poses further challenges for researchers due to the lack of control over what gets edited when and by whom - especially in the absence of a proper history of revision function.

Accessibility issues in MOOCs: potential services for people with special needs
The challenges and options that appear along with recent innovations in online education make researchers to reflect on the barriers that still exist for learners with special needs. In case of vulnerable learner groups, MOOCs seem to include special benefits for them, such as openness, low cost, ubiquity, social learning and the possibility of acquiring knowledge, new competences and develop professionally.
This is the main objective of present doctoral work: to provide an adaptive model for developing a recommendation system dedicated to people with special needs. The system will help these vulnerable users to find best MOOCs that suit their professional needs and that are more accessible for each learner. Both accessibility of eLearning platforms and content is analyzed, therefore the system should adapt its interface to each assistive technology and also the graded list of recommended MOOCs to best fit each user’s device and accessibility requirements.
Redefining distance? Online synchronous development of academic writing

Designing and Developing a Blended Course: Best Practices for Japanese Learners
This presentation outlines the iterative stages involved in designing and developing a blended course of English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) at Osaka University, implemented in the spring semester of 2017 over a period of fifteen weeks. First, the basic Successive Approximation Model (SAM) will be introduced as the guiding instructional design model upon which the course was created. Afterward, the stages of design and development of the blended course will be explicated with a focus upon assessing Japanese students’ English language needs and their e-learning readiness, determining the course overall goals and module learning objectives, optimizing course technologies and the availability of technical support, designing the course syllabus, materials, tasks, and activities, organizing team teaching, as well as managing formative and summative evaluation. Additionally, the way in which the iteration process has allowed for the discovery of some possibilities and problems at the early phases of the blended course design and development, and the refinements which were made to benefit from the affordable opportunities and to mitigate the difficulties will be discussed. The use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) will also be expounded in the light of Copy Right issues, and the authoring tools utilized in digitizing the materials alongside their merits and demerits will be described. Finally, the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric and its effectiveness in raising course quality assurance will be reviewed.

Abstract: A Body of Knowledge (BoK) is an ontology for a particular professional
domain. A Community of Practice (CoP) is the collection of people developing
such knowledge. In the paper we explore these concepts in the context
of the formal methods community in general and the Z notation community, as
has been supported by the Z User Group, in particular. The existing SWEBOK
Software Engineering Body of Knowledge is considered with respect to formal
methods and a high-level model for the possible structure of of a BoK is provided
using the Z notation.
Biography: Prof. Jonathan P. Bowen, FBCS, FRSA, is Chair of Museophile Limited, an IT consultancy company. He is also a Visiting Professor at University of Westminster since 2010 and an Emeritus Professor at London South Bank University since 2007. From 2007-2009, he was a Visiting Professor at the King's College London. In 2007, he was a visiting academic at University College London; in 2008, he was a visiting lecturer at Brunel University and during 2008-2009 he worked on a large industrial high integrity software engineering project using formal methods. Previously he was at the University of Reading, the Oxford University Computing Laboratory and Imperial College, London. He has been involved with the field of computing in both industry and academia since 1977, specializing in software engineering in general and formal methods in particular. In 2002, Bowen founded Museophile Limited with the original aim to help museums online. He is an enthusiastic contributor to Wikipedia in the area of museums and on computing topics. Bowen is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and of the Royal Society of Arts. He holds the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and is a member of the ACM and IEEE. He has an MA degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University.

Abstract:
The sheer inevitability and momentum of global adoption of all forms of technology has engendered a range of responses from wholehearted welcome and exploitation, to denial and anger . Consequently, the education landscape has been shifting, although not in the colossal, earth-rending manner that was initially envisaged. Information, Communication Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching (ICTELT) has progressively continued to evolve and mature, embedded in an increasing foundation of research. One key benefit identified in this process is the inclusiveness and fluidity that can be built into ICTELT experiences, especially when they occur within a collaborative community. This paper explores an example of how ICT was used to adapt part of an existing ‘problematic’ curriculum in a way that helped address central issues, encouraged collective learning and enabled learners. In the Foundations programme at Dubai Men’s College (DMC) students find the conventions of academic writing, and the requirement to improve their proficiency, challenging, especially as they are also struggling with the transition from secondary to tertiary education, and their own changing identities. The framework of existing Communities of Learning (CoL) was employed to introduce a blended, scaffolded approach that aimed to assist students with academic writing, as well as assisting their transition to more self-directed, confident learning. The design and implementation of the interventions is described, and a brief overview of the results of the associated research study is given, along with recommendations for educators wishing to adopt a similar approach.

Accessibility issues in MOOCs: potential services for people with special needs
The challenges and options that appear along with recent innovations in online education make researchers to reflect on the barriers that still exist for learners with special needs. In case of vulnerable learner groups, MOOCs seem to include special benefits for them, such as openness, low cost, ubiquity, social learning and the possibility of acquiring knowledge, new competences and develop professionally.
This is the main objective of present doctoral work: to provide an adaptive model for developing a recommendation system dedicated to people with special needs. The system will help these vulnerable users to find best MOOCs that suit their professional needs and that are more accessible for each learner. Both accessibility of eLearning platforms and content is analyzed, therefore the system should adapt its interface to each assistive technology and also the graded list of recommended MOOCs to best fit each user’s device and accessibility requirements.
Redefining distance? Online synchronous development of academic writing
This paper given at the 2013 Biennial BALEAP conference in Nottingham, discusses an implementation study of JISC funded research into Digital Literacies. I give an evaluative overview of an initial move to synchronous writing instruction at the Institute of Education, University of London.
Designing and Developing a Blended Course: Best Practices for Japanese Learners
This presentation outlines the iterative stages involved in designing and developing a blended course of English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) at Osaka University, implemented in the spring semester of 2017 over a period of fifteen weeks. First, the basic Successive Approximation Model (SAM) will be introduced as the guiding instructional design model upon which the course was created. Afterward, the stages of design and development of the blended course will be explicated with a focus upon assessing Japanese students’ English language needs and their e-learning readiness, determining the course overall goals and module learning objectives, optimizing course technologies and the availability of technical support, designing the course syllabus, materials, tasks, and activities, organizing team teaching, as well as managing formative and summative evaluation. Additionally, the way in which the iteration process has allowed for the discovery of some possibilities and problems at the early phases of the blended course design and development, and the refinements which were made to benefit from the affordable opportunities and to mitigate the difficulties will be discussed. The use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) will also be expounded in the light of Copy Right issues, and the authoring tools utilized in digitizing the materials alongside their merits and demerits will be described. Finally, the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric and its effectiveness in raising course quality assurance will be reviewed.

Abstract: A Body of Knowledge (BoK) is an ontology for a particular professional
domain. A Community of Practice (CoP) is the collection of people developing
such knowledge. In the paper we explore these concepts in the context
of the formal methods community in general and the Z notation community, as
has been supported by the Z User Group, in particular. The existing SWEBOK
Software Engineering Body of Knowledge is considered with respect to formal
methods and a high-level model for the possible structure of of a BoK is provided
using the Z notation.
Biography: Prof. Jonathan P. Bowen, FBCS, FRSA, is Chair of Museophile Limited, an IT consultancy company. He is also a Visiting Professor at University of Westminster since 2010 and an Emeritus Professor at London South Bank University since 2007. From 2007-2009, he was a Visiting Professor at the King's College London. In 2007, he was a visiting academic at University College London; in 2008, he was a visiting lecturer at Brunel University and during 2008-2009 he worked on a large industrial high integrity software engineering project using formal methods. Previously he was at the University of Reading, the Oxford University Computing Laboratory and Imperial College, London. He has been involved with the field of computing in both industry and academia since 1977, specializing in software engineering in general and formal methods in particular. In 2002, Bowen founded Museophile Limited with the original aim to help museums online. He is an enthusiastic contributor to Wikipedia in the area of museums and on computing topics. Bowen is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and of the Royal Society of Arts. He holds the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and is a member of the ACM and IEEE. He has an MA degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University.

Abstract:
The sheer inevitability and momentum of global adoption of all forms of technology has engendered a range of responses from wholehearted welcome and exploitation, to denial and anger . Consequently, the education landscape has been shifting, although not in the colossal, earth-rending manner that was initially envisaged. Information, Communication Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching (ICTELT) has progressively continued to evolve and mature, embedded in an increasing foundation of research. One key benefit identified in this process is the inclusiveness and fluidity that can be built into ICTELT experiences, especially when they occur within a collaborative community. This paper explores an example of how ICT was used to adapt part of an existing ‘problematic’ curriculum in a way that helped address central issues, encouraged collective learning and enabled learners. In the Foundations programme at Dubai Men’s College (DMC) students find the conventions of academic writing, and the requirement to improve their proficiency, challenging, especially as they are also struggling with the transition from secondary to tertiary education, and their own changing identities. The framework of existing Communities of Learning (CoL) was employed to introduce a blended, scaffolded approach that aimed to assist students with academic writing, as well as assisting their transition to more self-directed, confident learning. The design and implementation of the interventions is described, and a brief overview of the results of the associated research study is given, along with recommendations for educators wishing to adopt a similar approach.
