There are several types of second-hand knowledge that people obtain indirectly from others. These include cultural traditions, schooling, the internet, expert opinions, and news media. While second-hand knowledge allows people to learn more than they could on their own, it also risks lower quality and biases since the information has been filtered through others and may not be fully verified. The advantages of expanded learning must be balanced with critically examining the potential weaknesses of second-hand sources.

Fake news presents real problems. While misinformation has always existed, the internet and social media have allowed it to proliferate and wield unprecedented influence on public opinion and discourse. In the United States, fake news helped to determine the 2016 presidential election and it continues to inform national and state policies in harmful, counterproductive ways. Information professionals, and particularly librarians, are seizing this moment to demonstrate the power of their expertise by formulating new tools that can help the public navigate the so-called ‘post-truth world’. These tools capitalize on librarians’ command of information literacy and promote a skills-based approach that is not only essential to the foundations of research but vital for the very well-being of democracy. The presenters will discuss the different tools that librarians and other information professionals are creating such as research guides, videos, infographics, apps, and other types of media; evaluate the challenges and limitations of existing tools and approaches; and consider future implications and actions for librarians.
Benefits and Disadvantages of OER
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible teaching and learning materials that can be used for educational purposes. OER have several benefits including decreasing costs for students, enabling self-improvement through exploring different subjects, and allowing ideas to be shared more equally globally. However, OER also have disadvantages such as not providing credits towards a degree, requiring computer literacy to use, and potential accuracy issues since content is not always verified. Overall, OER are a new area that could positively influence education by increasing access to knowledge, though greater awareness of available resources is still needed.

The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).
